Howdy,

:tab The good riding weather won't last much longer! We're gonna shoot for a get together for both 10/23 and 10/30 (both Thursdays) at King's Cafe in Montgomery. Head one block North on FM 149 from Hwy 105 and it is on the right. Hope to see you there!

Adios,

As you know, Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend (10/26) so this may be the last Thursday night meet I make for a while. Hwy 149 is not near as much fun after dark (don't want to cut Bambi in half with my fairing).

We should talk about making these Sunday morning meets with a ride afterwards.

Good idea, Steve. I would be more likely to participate in a Sunday morning meet anyway, so long as it's not too terribly early.

Saturday morning or Sunday afternoons are fine with me. 9-10am for Sat and anytime after 1:00pm for Sun.

I just found out Cathy has to work Thursday night and so I will be playing "soccer mom" that night so it doesn't look like I will be able to make a King's night until next year...

I look forward to finally meeting you Mark. I'm riding down with two friends from Aggieland this evening. We're all looking forward to what may be the last evening ride for a while...

Oops... Sorry we didn't make it. This time of year can make evening riding treacherous with the setting sun. It got the better of one of my friends on FM 3090. No, we weren't speeding, but since we ride sport bikes (or any motorcycle for that matter) the locals were upset that we were trespassing on their curve. If the shift lever hadn't bent and the front brake lever hadn't broken off, believe me, we'd have been out of there MUCH sooner. Luckily my friend ony suffered from bruised pride as his gear was more than sufficient, but the bike was scuffed on most of the top surfaces after it planted in the soft ground and rolled over after he left the bike. Other than that and the before mentioned parts, the bike is okay. Don't think we'll be going on any more rides that may include riding into the setting sun. 8) Not for a while at least...

Doh! Which bike was it?

It was my friend Jose's red SV650. He's been riding for about 2 years on the street, so it wasn't a newbie mistake. Just a combination of bad glare and bad tires. We'll be getting some new tires for it soon as well as repairing the cracked tail piece this weekend. Hopefully the scuffs on the tank will buff out with some polishing compound and some elbow grease. I'm just glad it was only the bike that got hurt.

Darn Chris, Sorry to here about your buddies mishap. Glad he is O.K. We were wondering where you were last night. My wife, son and I did make it up there last night. Great ride and fantastic company. But Chris, Weren't you headed West to East away from the setting sun towards Montgomery?

Mark,

:tab If they were on 3090, at several points you will be facing into all of the compass points! It twists around pretty good. ;-)

:tab We made it a few miles North on 149 before I realized my back tire was not quite right. We pulled over and found a large nail stuck in the tread of my new Pilot Road :-( I emptied a few CO2 cannisters into it and limped it back to Montgomery. We parked at a local gas station with really bright lights and an air pump. I used my last tire plug to get it fixed. A quick fill and check to see if it was holding pressure and then we were back on our way home. I'll be pulling the tire and installing an internal patch. With the hole being near the center of the tread and right in the meat, I am not about to toss this tire away.

:tab I figure I picked up the nail last weekend on our Ark/Mo trip. This was the first time I've been back on the bike since then. It was feeling funny when we left the house but I just figured that was because I had not reset my suspension for two up riding. Larry "Leadwolf" Johnson picked up a rock in his brand new rear tire on our trip. Last time we were up there in Sept., his front went away real quick and I got a flat in my rear tire. Seems like that area is not real tire friendly

Scott hit the nail on the head. The particular stretch of 3090 it happened on heads directly east-west (or west east if you're coming from the other direction  ). At 5:45 in the evening right before daylight savings time ends, that means the sun is directly in your line of sight. Sometimes it can even give a nasty glare right off the road surface, but since it has been recently chip-sealed, it wasn't too bad. The sun was just in a bad place and when he realized he may be in trouble and try to stop, the combination of good brakes and bad tires got the better of him. We'll be getting some new rubber for his bike soon and I think I need to get him a tinted faceshield for Christmas... He doesn't like squeezing sunglasses under the helmet. 8) Hopefully I can make it out to some weekend rides in the future to meet up with everyone. Ride safe.

Just a friendly reminder about tomorrow night ;-) Can't ride yet, so we'll cage our way down there.

Adios,
