Scott, can you add the Garmin .gdb and .gpx to the acceptable file extensions so users and attach routes and tracks to their post?

GPS and GPX fles are allowed file type, but icons don't show.

I'd like to request that PDF files be attachable as well. It's a good format for maps, directions and anything else.

Any problems with that?

:tab Well, here is the orignal issue, bandwidth. Attachments get stored here on the server and consume part of the monthly bandwidth for the site. Bandwidth is not free and I currently don't use advertising to subsidize the site. However, I will speak with my host provider and discuss the issue. I would like to be able to keep these kinds of files on the server so that they are not lost if someone takes them off a personal site.

Scott,

Since bandwidth is an ever present issue, may I suggest some sort of encouragement for posters to limit the size of attached files. Huge pictures, as much as folk like them, do consume a lot of space. I'd think it quite reasonable to ask folk simply to think about bandwidth and clogging up the server before they post large files.

This group of folk seem to me to be about the most reasonable and well mannered people I've had the pleasure of encountering on the net. I think therefore, a request for self restraint in attaching files would be welcomed and honored by TWT folk.

Here is a test. It's a .gpx file made with Garmin MapSource.

Most gpx and gdb are much smaller than jpegs.

Let me know if you can read it.

The GPX attachments work.

:tab Grumpy, while I agree about our members being nice folks, I'd have to disagree that they would honor a simple request. Experience indicates otherwise. EVERY time I have put something on the board about limiting image size (display or filesize) it has been routinely ignored by all but a scant few members. I have had similar experiences with requests to limit vulgar language, posting formats in the members section, etc,... I don't think people are beligerantly violating the rules, I think they are just lazy and don't stop to consider the rules. So my experience is that unless people are forced into certain options like word filtering, restricted filesizes, limited posting privileges, etc,... they will simply ignore any voluntary constraints.

:tab What I would like to do is implement a small monthly fee (maybe $5 or so) for the privilege of uploading and attaching files. I might even have an incremental setup where users could get minimal privileges for the base fee, exanded privileges (more storage space, larger files, etc,...) for a higher fee. This would cover bandwidth costs and help me with the costs of running the site. I am working on it behind the scenes ;-)

Haven't seen it in years, but when I was a kid CBS would run it as a Sunday evening special every fall. Always looked forward to it. 8-)
