howdy,
name is alex and i just recently picked up a 2001 F4i as my first bike. why i didnt go for an old old bike to learn on, i have no idea. i just saw this bike, fell in love with it, and couldnt settle for less.
currently about to take the MSF course, and i currently take it only on the weekends to more back roads (i hesitate to highway the bike).
i've had several months experience on it and i can somewhat hold my own. but i've been looking for a good group of bike enthusiast to talk and learn more with. not the kind that speed around doing wheelies and such, just a group to cruise... to enjoy the ride.
so, hopefully u guys are a group of subtle people, cuz thats what i need.

Howdy!
:tab Well, you have come to the right place. We try to stress responsible and safe riding. You are already heading down the right path by taking the MSF course. Two other books I highly recommend are:
Twist of the Wrist II by Kieth Code
and
Proficient Motorcycling by David Hough
:tab Both can be had cheaply on Amazon.com. If you read them and study the different chapters, they will transform your riding and understanding of the dynamics of the bike's handling.
:tab As for getting together with people to ride, I will be doing quite a few rides next year specifically for newer riders with little group experience or just low mileage experience. We spend some time making sure everyone's bike is set up properly: suspension, tire pressure, chain adjustment, etc,... We go over some basic but core skills for everyone to focus on during the ride. We have several experienced riders on hand for each new rider so that new people can ask questions and get feedback about their riding.
:tab Keep an eye here in the Upcoming Events/Trips/Rides forum for details. Some will be planned very far in advance and others may be less than a weeks notice.
:tab Your 600 is a great bike as long as you can keep the testosterone in check. Things can go from great to crap real fast on that bike (or any bike for that matter). I look forward to seeing you on the road!
By the way, where are you located?
Adios,

im located on the NW side of houston. right at 290 and 1960.
and as for the books.. i checked out Twist of the Wrist II, and i think the book went too far into detail for actual road riding. it talked more about track riding, and it wasnt exactly what i was looking for. im positive i'll pick it up again whenever i have more knowledge of riding. someone also suggested Twist of the Wrist I, because i think it is geared more towards beginners.
me and a group of guys got our bikes all within the same week. my friend with the triumph TT600 is just as modest on the bike as i am on mine, so if there is a meet, he'll probably tag along.
i dont know about bringing my friends with the duc monster 750 or the one with the R1, they seem to be a little too confident in them bikes. so they prolly wont join us. we all our beginners except for the R1, he has been riding for years.
but anyhoo
good to meet u guys.

Welcome, alexisbroke!
Sweet bike you've got.
I'm still a novice, too, but these are the things I'm trying to remember when riding:
* Other motorists are out to get you
* Look where you want to go.

Howdy,
:tab The stuff that is important out of Twist of the Wrist II is the stuff on survival reactions. That is EXACTLY the same on the street or the track, on a sportbike or a cruiser. Taking a corner well on the street requires the EXACT same principles and procedures, you just do it slower. The stuff about when you get off the brakes, when you lean the bike, when you get on the gas, etc,... is all the same for street or track. The only difference between the street and track is your speed, and the fact that hopefully you are not racing each other on the street
:tab I have to admit Code's writing style leaves a LOT to be desired, but the survival reaction content is priceless. It will save your hiney on the road! hehe.
:tab We will be doing a bike night at King's Cafe up in Montgomery. King's is on FM 149 about a block North of Hwy 105. There are a bunch of folks from this site that are in your area, many of which ride up for the bike night. It will be Thursday evening, 7-9pm. Some people come early to run up through the National forest on FM 149.
Adios,
