Well saturday at lunch after the motorcycle show I was talking to Desmo and Bushwhacker, and we kind of all seemed interested in riding a dualsport/trail ride out in and around sam houston natl forest. So, I figure we could link some dirt roads and some trail here and there to make some fun routes. I will have to sit down and look at some maps to get some idea of what and where, but we could always adjust the route as we go or depending on who wants to ride and such. I have been wanting to get some dirt riding in real bad lately. There is a family enduro on sunday 11/20, but I WILL NEED MORE. ;-)

Anyone interested? If for some reason we do some more technical dirt riding as well, whoever doesnt want to do the more technical stuff can go around or something. Like I say, we can adjust it as we go or whatever. Lets see who is interested.

I am in!

I was looking at MapSource and there are about a hundred county roads, most likely all dirt, between Sam Houston, Navasota, and Anderson.

I'm kind of wondering if anyone around DFW might be thinking about trailering down there. Not sure I'd look forward to 200+ miles on the Sherpa just to get there, followed by a workout on the trails, followed by another 200+ mile return ride.

My butt hurts just thinking about it.

I want to go, now that the DRZ is broken in. Of course, my tires can't handle the 'technical stuff or too sandy. Mark has some concern about the seat on his CRF450x and might want to Trailer it up to a meeting spot and take it from there. Either way, I would like to go.

I'm in as long as the weather isn't crappy. I will ride up and meet you at one of the trailheads.

Some things to note about the SHNF:
1. It costs $5 per day (honor system) or $25 per year to ride the trails. The last time I was at the ranger station to buy an annual permit they could not make change! I do not think you need a permit to ride the dirt park roads.
2. It is deer season now. There are many hunters in the area, especially early in the mornings and late in the afternoon. If you stick to the marked trails and dirt roads there should be no issues. However, we should stay off the other trails for fear of coming up on a camo'ed hunter.

No, I haven't been taking it out at night. I wonder who it is? That is pretty close to where I live (Spring Cypress & Champions)

According to weather.com there is a 10% chance of rain on Friday and a 30% chance on Saturday.

I am up for either day.

Which day do we want to go and what time should we meet at King's Cafe for breakfast. (just remember it is over 50 miles for me to get to breakfast).

Hehe... you are forgetting that 30% chance of rain means 70% chain of no rain!! Those are good odds!! If the chance is that low, then it is likely to just be scattered showers if at all, not a frontal line.

I am working on trying to do this ride but with family in town it is not looking good ;-)

And as late as last Saturday evening they were predicting rain chances as high as 40-50% for Sunday. The day actually started out beautifully and stayed that way. 8-)

I can go friday, but I am iffy on saturday or sunday. I am working on more details with Bushwhacker and Desmo to see where they were thinking of heading. If people want to split up, that would work as well. Depending on how technical ppl wanted to get or try.

I have a couple of routes loaded in my GPS that would take us on a 45 mile ride from Just north of Montgomery out to Carlos and then a 55 mile ride back to Montgomery.

I figure we can meet at King's Cafe around 8:30 or 9:00, have breakfast and then head out, either to SHNF or the routes up to Carlos.

If we go to Carlos, we could do the 100 mile round trip, then have lunch back in Montgomery and spend a portion of the afternoon scooting around the National Forest if we wanted.

Thoughts, anyone?

Ok, are we doing a dual sport ride on Friday? If mostly dirt/gravel I am in with the DRZ. We can always meet at Kings on Friday morning, give me a time.

:tab Hmm... I might actually be able to make this work if we do the loop out to Carlos and back. Those are some fun roads. Anyone want to do some sand?? I know where there is a good stretch of it headed out that direction, most everything else is loose gravel.

Oh... I'm riding near the back. I get sick of leading ;-)

Desmo

Steven I sent you a pm.

Scott, I hope you are not thinking of anything too sandy, remember I still have the deathwings on for tires. I guess anything you can get that GS through, I can get through. I have read that my tires do not have good bite in sand or mud.

Yeah yeah yeah... sand is the teacher. Some day you must learn to ride thru it. You dont HAVE to go fast........ but it helps. :)

Your right..... I dropped mine in the sand on day 1 and it just makes me nervous
faster uh ....ok show me the sand

Georgiapeach

If I had knobbies, I wouldn't be nervious. Not afraid of the sand, just the tires.

I am going to check the weather when I get up and will post if it looks bad. Otherwise, I will meet Steven at 7:45 at Kuykendahl and Spring Cypress and we will head up. See you there.

:tab I'll try to get down there. For those afraid of the nasty stuff, sand and single track, I can show you some alternate roads ;-) I plan to head over to Outlaw Trax around 1:00pm to hook up with Pops and my Brother to ride trails on the ATV's.

I thought I'd forgotten something was going on this weekend. I spent the entire morning and most of this afternoon putting up Christmas stuff with the wife. This is one thing that I cannot get a 'kitchen pass' to get out of. :/

Well guys n gals, it was a very nice day. Thanks to Bill and Scott for showing us some nice roads, cool old bridges, and how to get to places the back way. I enjoyed all the company and good stories as well.

Thanks,
Vaughn
