View Full Version : Dual Sport Day at Cross Creek Cycle Park

I had my KLR out at a local motocross track yesterday and, while there, decided to run one lap of the beginner motocross track. Son of a gun, the old KLR handles motocross tracks better than I expected. :-) It handled the turns nicely and I even got some air on all the jumps. To top it off, I even passed 3 other riders - one adult, one kid, and one kid on an ATV. While I had a great time, I'm sure all 3 were surprised being passed by a motorcycle with mirrors, blinkers, and a license plate while they were all riding competition level off road dirt bikes or ATVs.
I spoke to the owner of the place today and suggested he sponsor a "dual sport day" at his facility in the near future. He agreed and offered us a discounted entry on that day.
The facility is named Cross Creek Cycle Park (www.crosscreekcp.com). It is a 260 acre facility about 30 miles east of Austin with 4 motocross tracks (beginner track, main track, night track, kids track), about 6 miles of trails, and several large open fields to ride in.
Who here is interested in an organized ride at this place?

That would be neat. It's just a tad out of the way for me. I'm north of Houston (Conroe) and would have to make it a 2 or 3 day weekend. Schedule permitting, I would love to do it.
By the way, the link you have in your post doesn't work. Is it spelled right? Maybe their site is down for now.

Ah, I see why. The trailing parenthesis got hooked into your URL link.
This one works.

:tab Wasn't Woodbutcher talking about this place not long ago? He wanted to get everyone together. He and Irondawg have been out there a few times I think. What is the name of the one just East of Waco? It was similar to this
:tab Richard, do you have the stock sprockets on the KLR? If not, dropping a tooth on the front would help a LOT for that kind of riding ;-) Was the course very tight? I rode Wasabi's KLR over here at the Outlaw Trax, which is tight woods single track in places, lots of sand, creek crossings, cow poop, etc,... and I hardly ever even let the clutch all the way out in first gear! It was a handful and after a lap I was beat!! Of course it was pretty hot that day too :-|

The trails at CC are not very tight. There are a few, short sections that are tight, but I estimate that there is not more than an eighth of a mile of tight stuff. I'm fairly confident we could ride the KLRs on the trails and have fun doing it.
The trails crosses a creek several times and in some places the banks are fairly steep and intimidating, especially if you haven't ridden off road before, but if my memory is correct all the crossings are doable on a KLR.
I think the only thing that might spoil our fun is when the trails get very beat up following a Gran Prix race. A Gran Prix, for those who aren't familiar with it, is a race whose course contains both motocross and trails - its a combination of a motocross race and a hare scramble. Cross Creek has one of these scheduled for Sun, Dec. 11th and I'm expecting the trails will get rugged and very whooped out by the end of the race. All is not lost though, I can get the owner to drag the trails with his heavy equipment prior to our DS day, which will make the trails rideable and fun for us.
If there is enough interest in a DS day, I will take my KLR out there prior to our event and ride all of the trails to verify they are okay for our purposes.
And for those out-of-town folks, camping is allowed on the property at a reasonable cost. You can tent camp or even bring in an RV (quite a few out of town motocrossers camp or RV it). Fires are allowed. There are also several stocked ponds that are open for catch-and-release fishing.

I was talking about Crooked Creek (NE of Waco) probably. I have mentioned Cross Creek before, but it is a single trail really and multiple motocross tracks. I find that a couple of laps around the trail and I'm bored. Crooked Creek has a bunch of different trails and is geared for the trail riding crowd. Cross Creek is geared for the MX crowd. To many times I've had people blasting through when I've been out there with my daughter. They also have been attracting some of the squidly quad types too.
Richard, you should join us at the AMSA club lease this saturday by Bastrop. Only $10 and much less crowded (20 people on 100 acres). PM me for more info, or check the upcoming rides section. Also I'm trying to organize a ride at Crooked Creek for New Year's.
