The speedometer on my KLR has been acting up ever since I got this bike. Finally, 2 weekends ago it gave up the ghost for good. So, I started pulling things apart on Sat to try and locate and then repair the problem. I discovered that part of my front wheel hub, the part that engages the speedometer worm gear, had broken off. One would think the speedo worm gear would break before a cast metal piece of the hub would break, but such was not the case. I've looked it over and don't see how it could be repaired, so it appears I will need a new front wheel hub.
Fellow KLRers, look around your garage for a spare front wheel and/or hub that you can sell to your good buddy Richard. :-)
Can it be welded up and shaped?

:tab Any luck asking about this on the KLR650.net site? I would think that someone else might have experienced this and have a suggested fix, hopefully other than replacing the entire hub :-|

Is it just the speedo drive? Should be able to find what you need for a KLR on ebay. Ain't like they're a new model or exclusive or anything. Should be multiple pages of KLR stuff.

txmedic,
Welding it was my first thought. I'm no expert welder, but I think welding it won't work due to the nature of the break. I've got the tire off and am going to run it by the place that welded my cyliner head 2 months back to get their opinion on it.
tourmeister,
I haven't posted it there yet, but plan to.
Jack,
The speedo drive is fine. The hub itself - the part of the hub that the speedo drive interfaces with - is broken.

Hmmm, I see a bicycle computer mounted to the handlebar in that picture. Hmmm...

Yeah, I think I am missing some connection here... HiSPL, enlighten us please ;-)
Are you saying to just get the sigma and forget the stock setup? I wonder how that might affect odometer discolosures when selling a bike?

The sigma works better than stock anyway.
As far as Odo readings, every time I register a vehicle the odo is always listed as N/A. Maybe it's just me but why even include a spot for it if your not going to put it on my title?
Also, "dirt bikes" are not required to have an odometer are they?

Also, since your speedo cable has broken this automatically means that your odo reading is N/A. So what does it matter what kind of speedo you use now.....
