Oh great and omnipotent Moderators, I'd like to request addition of a few new smiles and replacement of one. I just find I cannot adequately communicate without them.

First, the replacement:
I've never liked the laughing (lol) smilie. It just looks like his top lip is flapping in the wind.... like a dog with is head out the window. It's so unnatural that I rarely can bring myself to use it.

ADVRider has a great one that I'd love to see in it's place: http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/lol2.gif vs.
http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/lol8.gif

And a few handy new ones I'm requesting:

One of the all-time best is the happy rider: http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/happyrider.gif
http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/ricky.gif
It is perfect for conveying excitement for an upcoming ride, joy from a just-finished ride, toodling along on a long ride... you get the picture.

To convey being mischevious or enticing:
http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/trustme.gif
What better smilie could you use when telling someone the best way to see if there is gas in the tank is to open the gas cap and hold a match to shed some light? http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/trustme.gif See?

Last, the Pilot: http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/pilot.gif
http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/mace.gif
Similar in use to the happy rider, but conveys a sense of achievement, a long ride or old-school wisdom when used.

After 25,000 miles, I won the Iron-Butt http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/pilot.gif
Back in my day we didn't have brakes on motorcycles! http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/pilot.gif

I'd gladly contribute a dollar per smilie to help offset cost of acquisition. http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/trustme.gif

Other than the pilot, I already have the others and just have not uploaded them yet http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/naughty.gif I'll try to get right on that! Although, that pilot one just doesn't seem to convey anything at all to me... maybe a hippie hollywood director

Ooh yay! More to play with!

I personally like the "augh and point" one, but only as long as it's me using iit and it's not being used on me.

Paul, we already have the 2nd and 3rd ones on your list ;-) They've been there for some time now. This is the first I have seen of the nodding dude. Never noticed it on AdvRider before. They did recently add some more to their list.

OK. Just one more. When I commented in your "new baby on the way" thread about not wanting to get pregnant myself, the smiley I thought we had and what I really needed was this one: http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/uhoh.gif

It conveys being creeped-out, afraid of the unknown, or needing to tread lightly, whereas the one I used is more of alertness and distrust: :wary:

Also, what happened to the mischevious smiley http://www.twtex.com/forums/images/smilies/trustme.gif. I thought it got loaded, but now I can't find it. :-( I'll gladly give up the pilot to make room for these two.

Hmmm... I could have sworn I loaded the mischevious guy  I'll double check that and the first one you mentioned!

Brian, I can do the first two. The big long may really screw up the display of all the others because of its' large size. Can't see the Pie Run pic

I'm good.

But I agree a good eatin' smiley wold be handy with all these pie & BBQ runs going on. I can't see the one Texas T asked for either, but once again ADVRider has a good one: http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/DukeGirl.gif
http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/DukeGirl.gif

I like the "worthless without pics" one too, but understand it could mess up the formatting in the smilies window. Could it go at the bottom and stretch across both columns without messing up the stuff above?

Can't see the Pie Run pic  It was there when I first made the post but is MIA right now. I went to the original site and it's missing from there as well. :-(

The one that Chris suggested would be just as good.

Suggestion: Could you list just the basic smilies in the box to the right of the text input window? Only speaking for myself here, but there are so many of them now that it's getting hard to find the ones I use most frequently, and I don't have enough RAM in my head to remember the keystrokes for them. ;-)

CycleCat

I was going to wait a week and then request the same thing. I figure it is good to give the new smilies some exposure so everyone sees the new "toys" but then put the basics in the box next to the posting form.

Scott, does this software give you stats on which smilies are used most? If you put the top 10-12 next to the posting box along with a few new ones you want to show off it would be super-handy!

This is more than 15, but if there is no top dozen, I vote for any selection from these:
:lol2:   :chug:  :brainsnap  :dude:  :rider:   :miffed:  :pound: :wary: :loco:  :duck: :uhoh: :trust: :eat: :deal: :puke:

By the way, the rolling eyes smiley is on there twice as "Roll" and "Rolleyes". If all this smiley work is getting to be too much for ya, I'd be glad to serve as "Smiley Mod." :patriot:

Gilk51
01-10-2006, 12:26 PM
Don't forget ;) as a commonly used smilie... :trust:

CycleCat
01-10-2006, 12:55 PM
You're right... the wink is important. I'm sure we could bump one of the others to make room for that one on the front page so you don't have to open the smilie link.

Tourmeister
01-10-2006, 03:12 PM
:tab The rolleyes in on twice because it used to be [rolleyes] and with the switch to the new VB forum software, it was set as [roll]. If I remove the old one, any posts that have that smiley will no longer show it. I thought I had the old one way down on the bottom of the list.

:tab I don't know if there is a way to track which smilies get the most face time. That would be a cool hack on the Admin side of things though! IF I get a bit of free time, I will see what I can do about reordering them. But really, how hard is it to remember the tag for those really basic ones? :-P And does it really take that long for the list to load when you click the "more" link? It is hard for me to gauge since I have a fast connection, but I do want to be sensitive to those poor souls still on dial up :suicide:

CycleCat
01-10-2006, 03:48 PM
With my fat-fingered typing it wouldn't matter if I did remember the tags... I'd still mistype them and they wouldn't work.

It's not that the list takes long to load when you click "more," it's that no matter what I do, the window opens smaller than the table so I always have to resize it to see the second column, and then I still have to scroll through and find the one I need. ALthough scrolling will always be needed, I think you could pretty easily gain a consensus on a top dozen that everyone uses on a regular basis.

I see you have already changed some and it's already a lot better. While the Borg/terminator one is perfect once in a while, it would be one that I would normally bump to the second window after a few days debut. Same with the long-winded lecturer and the propeller beanie. Most of the rest you could prolly keep on the front page althrough I think we only need one eatin' one.

This forum is a positive place and I like that. It's why I suggested so many "happy" smilies on the front page.

Here's my vote: Of the 15 on the front page...
6 happy/congratulatory smilies:
:lol2:   :chug: :dude: :rider: (or similar)

5 scared/skeptical/mad ones:
:brainsnap    :loco: (etc.)

4 miscellaneous/changing/debuting ones:
 :coffee: :duck: :eat: (or whatever strikes your fancy that week)

Of course all this is just *MY* opinion and if you ask someone else they will tell you 15 others are better. Regardless of what you choose I'll still keep posting.

Again, sorry for making so much work. Hey, at least you already have a nursery prepared and your new bike is mostly outfitted the way you want so you don't have all that to do right now too! :lol2:

Tourmeister
01-10-2006, 03:52 PM
:tab Actually, I have not changed anything yet. Many of the smilies at the top of the list have the same sort order number. I can assign numbers to them so they display in the order I want. Where the numbers are the same, it seems to order that group randomly each time you view the box.

CycleCat

:tab Actually, I have not changed anything yet.

Oh. OK. Cuz the Borg moved to the top of the list after being in the middle. Right now it is in the middle of the bottom row. Weird. I figured you were fine-tuning. :uhoh:

I was wondering if it puts the most recently used ones on the "front page" list - otherwise it does look like random ordering...

Just putting in a request for one more smilie: http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/2ar15smilie.gif

Handy for conveying the attitude of being "locked & loaded/ready for action/ defenses up/don't mess with me!"

I also wanted to reiterate a request for a better mix of smilies in the box next to the post form. Right now it is entirely too warm & fuzzy. A few irritated, shocked and skeptical faces would really help.

Gracias.
