Got me a replacement bike for the stolen KX. '02 CRF450R. Just hope I don't regret getting a Honda again after all these years. :lol2:

The only regret from me would be adding a couple of strokes.
Yeah, great flat tracker! Why is it when I see a dirt bike, I see a flat tracker?

Missed some good ones today. Had a spectacular crash that ended with a bunch of twigs and leaves stuffed in my helmet visor! I'm pretty beat up from that one. I'm gonna be hating life the next couple days.:lol2:
This sucker has gobs of torque/power. I'm gonna kill myself on this thing! :dude: :-D

Believe me, I was a bit hesitant about adding those strokes. I've always been a die hard ring a ding guy, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I have to say after todays outing I'm a convert to the thumpers! This thing rocks! That thing makes power all over the place. The crazy thing is, it's geared way taller then stock. The guy that had it before me went down 5T on the rear! I can't wait to go back to stock gearing. Probably gonna spend a lot of time on my back. :lol2:

I'm seriously considering upgrading from my beloved XR400 to a 450x. Angela has signed off on the idea already (or maybe I bribed her), just need to make up my mind...

From what I understand, and mind you I have no personal experience, but the high strung MXers like the CRF require a lot more maintenance than something like the XR400. I'd be a bit concerned about that if I were going to DP or motard one. I'd buy one just to play on or race, but I don't think I'd put lights and a horn on it. I mean, you could do it. I've seen street legal CR500s before. But, they'll probably need some PM more often.
In fact, I can TELL you what I'd do with it. I'd lower it, stiffen it up, put 17s on it, and buy slicks for it. I'd also have a set of rains for dirt track. That's my version of dual purpose, road racing and flat track. I've been wanting to do this for a while now, get into a big thumper for racing. It's what I like about XR100s in the minis, you can road race one weekend and go flat tracking the next. And there was a guy on a CRF at MSR Houston this weekend railing on it with slicks. He was really hooking up and looked like he was having a ball!

AFAIK, the CRF450 "R" like Albie has is the MX version and a bit more high strung. The "X" version I'm considering is down a bit on power, wider-ratio tranny, less maintainience-intensive, softer suspension, and a bit heavier (happy button, lights, wiring, etc).
Lots of folks are cool with a MX bike on trails, while I prefer to stick with enduros. Getting older the idea of a happy button is a big draw as well... :)
And stop posting all the mini-GP references Jack. You're making me look at every little 80-100cc bike I see with very, very impure thoughts...;-)

Jeff, you should get the 450X, you'll be amazed at the difference in power! This thing blows my DRZ away!.
Having one enduro bike with the happy button, I have to say I prefer the MX bikes. The weight really does make a difference IMO. Especially later in the day after about the 10th time you're picking the thing up. :lol2: The X weighs 35 lbs more then the R, which doesn't sound like all that much, but believe me you feel it.
The X has a softer suspension, wider ratio tranny and only 5 gears, It's tuned down from the R. Both are more expensive to maintain then a 2 stroke, or the XR that's true, but believe me, the extra maintenance costs are worth it! Besides, as little as Jeff rides these days, he'll go years before he even needs to change the oil. :duck:

CRF in Motard trim with dirt wheels on the side is the way to go.
And yes if you ride it on the street at high speeds alot you'll be rebuilding it mo sooner than you want.
I love mine and can't do with out it.

I got a new new set with near new slicks for $750. I still use my stock rotors though. It's a cheap way to give it a try.
