Is there any chance that anyone might be planning a trip to SHNF the week of 01/06-08/06? I've got the whole week off and I've never been there and I'm dying to. I've done lots of DS riding and lot of trail riding but I've never been there and I need to get to know it. It's a lot more fun when you don't get lost for hours. I would probably haul from S. Houston to SHNF. There has to be someone going in that time frame please give me a holler.

How about tomorrow 1/1? My husband Mark and my son Alex (14) are going. They will Trailer up, we live in Spring, off of Spring Cypress and Champion Forest Blvd. If you want to meet, either pm me or call my cell (713) 542-3484. We have to pick up Alex from camp tonight so we won't be doing much partying. Mark is not a realy early bird eithter, he will probably want to leave here about 10am. Here is our address if you want to mapquest it: 9118 Memorial Hills drive, Spring, TX 77379.

Next weekend sounds good but I have never ridden there either. I do have a 4 gallon tank that allows some amount of getting lost time.:rider:
I have no GPS nor do I know the paved roads up there never mind the single tracks.
I would truck up there making it kind of important to find the start point.
Too bad about riding tomorrow as I have another afternoon commitment.
Maybe somebody else that knows the area will offer to lead? Bagwell, are you out there?

Georgia thank you very much. I can't begin to tell you how much I regret reading this so late. There is just no way I can get ready to go that quick now. I've got to change out an almost completely bald rear tire then load up gas up ect. and I just want get done that quick. But boy if they are going any other time this week I'd sure like to tag along. Yall have fun.

So are you thinking of a drive up Friday, ride Saturday, drive home Sunday thing?

Where's the trailhead anyway? I think I rode there about 4-5 years ago but can't remeber for sure.

Oh, and are you camping or hoteling it? Some of us Dallas folk need a soft bed... :)

:tab Let me know if you out of town folks need help. I am only a few minutes from the trailhead and have a garage with tools. Unfortunately, I won't be able to come out to play. There are quite a few hotels here in town. Also, there is camping a few miles South of town at the Sam Houston State Park and also at the Stubblefield Lake Park on the Northern tip of Lake Conroe. Gimme a shout if you want to do dinner in the evenings if you are staying here.

Well, I would love to ride sometime soon. Me and Pdef (phillip) and a couple of others were talking about getting a trail ride together sometime soon up there. I dont know all the dirtroads around the area to get a dual sport together, but I do know a bunch of the trail in the forest. There are a few trail heads accessible from 1375. You need to buy a forest pass for the day at the trail head or buy a yearly pass from the forest service station on 1375 to ride the trails. I am interested in doing a trail ride, but am not sure I could do it during the work week. Let me know if anyone is planning anything on the weekend though and I will try to plan on coming out and riding some. The number to the forest ranger office to check if its open is 1 888 361 6908 and you pick option 2 to listen to the multi use trail msg. If you use the option to talk to the operator you can ask a different question or whatever.

Let me know,
Vaughn

No Sprocket I would just drive up and down in the same day. It's only a little over an hour drive for me. But I'd probably head up pretty early and come back that afternoon. I really don't know how much riding there is to do there. I do have some maps of the area with the trails on it and the trail head so I think I could get done.

Tourmeister I'd like to meet you if possible I've read many of your ride reports. Do you have a new baby now? Is that what's holding you back? If so congradulations.

Bagwell if you think you'd like to do it on the weekend let's plan it. Sproket you'd be more than welcome to join us. You can sleep over all you want.

I'll call the ranger station today and find out what's up. I can't imagine their close its been really dry.

Okay as of right now all trails are open and they are screaming for motorcycles to come and ride them. We must oblige them!

Just say when. Come on.

Do you have that rear tire mounted up and all? I might be willing to go out there. We are kind of slow this week, so maybe even during this week. Let me find out...

I don't have it mounted yet but but I will before the weekend. When do you think might be good for you? I am probably going to be commited to wife for tomorrow (Wed) now but I'm game any other time. During the week would be great. But anytime is good.
That's exactly why I took this whole week off it's always slow for me. It's been great I took a ride yesterday rode down to Galveston some road some beach some back rodes. It was beautiful out there. It just doesn't get any better than this weather we're having!

:tab Just gimme a holler if you are heading this way. Yeah, we have a one year old now and she is nonstop! My riding has definitely slowed down in the last year, but it has been a good trade off ;-) I am just counting the days until she's big enough for a little dirt bike... I just hope she likes it!

Hey guys, I went Sunday and rode. Trails were really good because of heavy dew. It was warm! If you go to Stubblefield make sure you call and ask for maps to be placed out. They were all gone. We don't need them but if you have never been you may want to have one with you.

Oh! Here is a thought go to the Trail Riders of Houston web site, http://www.trh-cycle.org/ they have maps you can download.

Keep the post coming I may just show up and ride.

Well, if it stays slow, thursday, friday, or saturday would be nice. It would be great to do some dirt riding thurs or fri, but I need to check with the office today and see what is scheduled.

If your looking for riders on the weekend, I'm available.I've been there many times. The best trail for DS bikes is the south loop on the west side of the lake.

Bagwell
01-04-2006, 02:53 PM
Yeah, I think we will ride the west side. I have not been over there in a lil while. I am looking at going tomorrow, what do yall think? I will have to meet up wiht Phillip (Pdef) not too far from the trail head and meet everyone out there. Does everyone know where the west side trail head is at Kelley's pond? I will check the road number, but I believe its 45N to 1375W across lake conroe to 204(across from stublefield lake road) go south and then the first right which I think is like kelly pond road(271 I think) or something and take it to the end to Kelleys Pond. I can double check and repost.
I should say though, that this would be a mostly all trails ride not DS. But we can do a DS ride another time. :)

That all sounds great, is there any chance of doing it on Friday or have you already firmed this up? I have just spent all day with my wife and haven't had a chance to get anything ready. But I can get it done.

I don't know where anything is. It does look as though you could take I45 to 1375 west then go either north or south depending on where you want to park. It looks like there is parking off of 208 or off of 271 at Kelly Pond.

Let me know what works for you Its going to be really tough to get all this together tonight but I will.

If you are on 1375 the road to the Trailhead is easily recognizable with little yellow signs, after you make your turn on the paved road follow it straight(left) where it turns into a gravel road and you will see the trailhead on the left after a little ways and a few potholes. It was pretty dusty when Mark and Alex were there Sunday. There should be maps on the back side of the brown sign where the payment envelopes are.

Alright we did it! Thanks alot Vaughn and Philip. It was a blast. Man I new I was tired but I really new after I had been driving toward Houston for an hour and the second hour really got tough. But I'd do it again tomorrow if I thought I wouldn't ruffle any feathers. Can't wait to go back. Thanks to everyone for all the advice. Man it was dusty!

Yeah, I had a great time riding with you guys. Thanks Jim and Phillip for getting the ball rolling to go out and ride. Dust sucked, but at least it was a BEAUTIFUL day to ride. There was at least one mud hole depth test though, and we did a lot of checking maps due to me not having ridden that side in a year. I think I have it now though. I still want to finish that northwestern loop since we kind of gravel roaded it back to the last trail head.
Lets do it again sometime soon. There seems to be some interest in it from some others as well.
I think a dual sport ride in the area going from forest service roads to trails to trail heads to gravel roads etc would be a real blast as well. I guess we will have to research which roads are open to traffic that we could route thru to connect to trails and such.

I was nice meeting you Jim, and good to see Phillip again. :)

Thanks ThorH but I'm probably done for this week. But I do want to go back so lets stay in touch. If we keep having the weather we've been having I'm probably going back soon. I'd really enjoy following a viking out there. Maybe we could eat some mutton.
