We may be able to round up a few DFW area riders for a trip to SHNF in a couple of weekends. Is there anyone local to the area who would be interested in joining us as a trail guide?

Why can't the two be combined. I am sure there is some pie somewhere in Montgomery.

I should be ready to ride again by then.

Let me know when ya'll wanna come down.I've ridden there many times. There's somethings you should consider about the trails. They're very twisty and technical. They're definitely a challenge on 650.All the trails are rideable on a DS,however certain loops have very long sand sections[the sand is not there naturally-it's what they use to repair the trails].The south loop on the west side is my favorite. There's hardly any sand and in 20 miles it crosses at least 4 fireroads[great for DS wanting to shortcut].You might want to change your final drive for riding there. Mile after mile of clutching it gets really old.I ride my '90 DR650s there with 15/46[stock is 16/42]. Quite a drop.

:tab We can do a Huntsville Pie Run again that weekend. That is about the only way I will be able to make the Pie Run hehe. It was at the Farm House Cafe here in town. The food and desserts were good. The trailheads are about twenty minutes from here at the most.

Between that and pie, we can always adjust to another weekend.

But you're still going to miss the pie.

Good catch, Squeaky.

If you guys that are going to the forest pick a day and time I may come up on the DRZ, but I won't do single track on it. If someone wants to get with me who can pull my trailer, we can load up the CRF100.

We were talking about riding the forest on the HSN board. I have a little TTR clone, 150cc, that I'd ride up there. It's not street legal, but it sounds like the bike for the place. I've ridden at Somerville and it don't get no tighter than THAT and it was perfect there. Everyone has told me the forest was open and WFO a lot of places. Never heard anything about "tight", but I guess tight is relative, eh?

I have a 200cc DP, but it's a little too big for the trailer I tow behind my Wing.

I think I might be up for this. Don't know how I'd be as a guide because I haven't been there in about 6 years, but I used to ride those trails a couple of times a week. Hopefully not much has changed. They are pretty easy (compared to others I've been on), mainly because there are bridges over creeks and such (that sucks, I know...), but I know of some secret ones  .

Jack Giesecke

I believe a creek shouldn't have man made help. However, I may change my opinion after watching that "Last Man Standing" race on speed last night.

:tab Only briefly on Bagwell's WR400 which was fun until I wiped out and had to kickstart a flooded bike... in July... Also on Wasabi's KLR 650, and that was a a serious workout! His bike had the 14 tooth sprocket on the front. There was a LOT of deep sand and it was very tight. I was slipping the clutch like crazy!

gotdurt
01-09-2006, 03:45 PM
Do it for 1/2 hr, get the feel of it, and you'll be ripping it up, even on the 650. You will be very sore in the legs, butt and back for about a week after though ;) . You shouldn't have any clutch problems unless the clutch is fairly worn already. I never had any slippage in the SHNF on either bike.

Ok, so maybe that's just my opinion because I have a DS and not a dirt bike... :uhoh:

Tourmeister
01-09-2006, 03:51 PM
:tab The slippage was not a mechanical issue, it was because I had to manually slip the clutch in the tight stuff. Even in first gear, in places I could not let the clutch all the way or I would go shooting off into a tree, hehe. The Wr400 was nice, as was Philip's XR200. I ran those in second gear. Same for Hemibee's KTM 400 (that bike rocks!).

Well, I probably wont be able to make the official pie run. I can however maybe ride dirt and do a mini relocated pie affair nearby the dirt. :)
I can also pick up a rear stand if someone happens to bring it down this way from Sprocket's neck of the woods. heh.

Oh, and I think Scott means "feather" the clutch to control the speed of the bike in a particular gear. :)

I've spent alot of time on the Multiuse Trails at the SHNF and they are great. For the most part tight, as far as trees on both sides and turns back to back to back. The trails are not one way, so be careful in blind corners. There are no difficult climbs and plenty of sand. After rains there are spots that turn into mud bogs over time. Don't forget your tow rope and a few tools.

Usually after several days of rain they will close the trails to protect them from getting torn up so you may want to call and confirm if they are open before you make the trip, that is if trail riding is what you want. SHNF 936-344-6205 option 2.

Bikes used on the trails do not have to be street legal, but they do need a spark arrestor, and the rider is required to wear a helment. Bikes that are ridden on the forrest dirt roads have to meet the same requirements as the street. The Forrest LEO's do enforce this. All of the rules are posted at the designated parking areas.

If I'm off, my son and I may try and join yall. Be safe and have fun.

I was hoping to come, but my wife just pointed out to me that the boy is swimming in HS divisional meet. This is the ramp up for the State championship...and the stopping point if he doesn't do well. He made it to State last year so expectations are high.

Anyway, slipping (feathering) a wet clutch is an approved method of working your way through the woods, but don't get it too hot. That's shared oil on most 4 strokes. Have fun, wish I could make it.

Anyway, I have no idea what the pie talk is about because I am new here. It could be literally pie eating or it could be something, well anyway.

If you are not familier with the New Waverly area. Some of the best Pie ever is at the Waverly House. It is a good place to eat after a good ride in the forest.

And if you did not know SHNF, is in New Waverly

I initially was planning to just post something general without a date, but discussions like that tend to go 20 or 30 pages without settling on a specific date to go.

The pie run is a monthly thing. The last Saturday of the month we pick some little diner, etc that serves pie as an excuse for a ride. It's usually conducted in a bunch of little groups. The only thing official about them is the time and destination. If Edom is too far for you, don't worry, eventually one will rotate closer. It's also a good excuse to get together and put some faces with the screen names.

ta2240
01-10-2006, 11:28 AM
That clears things up.
I will wait on a definate date to see if I can make it. The best time for you guys to ride is really early in the mornings because SHNF gets pretty dusty. The heavy dew lately has made it nice.

There are some really good dirt rodes down here and some beautiful blacktop also but the trails are the best.

Have fun with the pie. That is way to far for me.

01-10-2006, 03:48 PM
Alrighty, I am not doing the pie run. I will be staying around here and goofing off in the SHNF.

And if you did not know SHNF, is in New Waverly

Uhh... I think you have that backwards :-P

:tab For you out of town guys, there are trail heads where you can park your truck/trailer unload the bike and ride all you want without being street legal. There is a lot of sand so knobbies would be best. You will need to get a permit from the ranger office on FM 1375 on the East side of Lake Conroe. I believe it is $20 for a year or $5 for a day. There are enough trails to keep you busy for quite some time.

:tab For those not wanting to do the singletrack stuff and that are street legal, I have GPS tracks for a LOT of little routes in the area on fun Forest Rds, and county roads.

:tab Personally, I am not up for heading to the Forest by 8:00am ;-) I would be happy to let folks meet at our home here in Huntsville and riding down. I wouldn't mind leaving here at 9:00am. We are about 15-20 minutes from the both the East and West trailheads.

Bagwell
01-10-2006, 05:48 PM
You can also get a day pass at each trailhead. They have them there in a box and you put your 5 dollars in the envelope and drop it in a steel tube and keep the stub on you with your license. If you want a year long pass you have to go to the Forest Service Office on 1375 and they are open M-F 9 to 5 and Sat 9 to 3 I believe. If you want to check hours though... SHNF Office 1-888-361-6908

The other thing people might want to make sure to bring is some extra gas and WATER. :) I prefer using a camelback or other water bladder backpack. The Waverly House and Kings Cafe are not too far away to go eat at, but its usually much easier to just bring your lunch and snacks and then just eat at one of those places after riding. I guess some could load up in a truck or two and go eat lunch at one of those places if they wanted though.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but; are all national forests different so far as the entry? I was just in New Mexico, and the Lincoln National Forest rangers said they didn't require the purchase of the permit, and did not want to see the spark arrestor. They were very polite.....Also is the year long permit good for all NF's or just the one you purchase it from? Not that 20 bucks is a big deal, just curious..

Jason

Bagwell
01-10-2006, 09:53 PM
yes, all natl forests can be different. The 25 dollar year long pass is good only for Sam Houston Natl Forest at this time. They are going to change some of this over the next few years. I am not sure what they will change, but things will change. All forests are supposed to require spark arresters and a noise limit as well as helmet and possibly eyewear as far as I know. The permit thing is on a forest by forest basis and different places can require different permits and things or no permit at all as I understand it.

I went by the SHNF Ranger Station today on FM 1375 and picked up a Multiple-Use Trail flyer.
There is lots of rules and regulations as to where, how and what is allowed on trails, but most of it applies to ATV's not General Off Road Vehicles (motorcycles).

Most important ones are:
1. Spark arrester
2. Helmet
3. Eye protection
4. Brakes
5. DUI

#1 is the one that concerns me and due to the somewhat dry conditions I ordered one.

I will bring the flyer with me to King's tomorrow night for those interested.

On the backroads... :ponder:

You know, 6 years ago, 'trail closed' signs didn't phase me...

However, for some reason it doesn't seem to be a great idea anymore...:shame: What's wrong with me?! :headbang: Hopefully I will face a great deal of pressure, and will have no choice but to get muddy....

I have to go to H-village anyway, but I don't think the the DR will be legal (it's in pieces right now), unless I quit my job or something. I'll be doing good just to shoe on the knobbies. So, running forest roads may not be an option for me.

well, I wonder if the guy at Outlaw wants to let us all come and play there if the forest is closed? hehe I doubt it. I bet the trails are just fine tho. For now, I am planning on riding the forest.

I need to pay the Outlaw guy a visit... Maybe see if I can work out a TWT thing.

:tab There is also the General Sam Houston park on the North side of town. No trails really, just dirt roads on a huge piece of property. Lots of gnarly water crossings and ravines. It was fun on an ATV. The only problem might be that they have a parkwide speed limit as it is not setup for racing, more for 4 x 4's. However, there is no membership requirement, just an entry fee.

And one last thing... If everyone is on a street legal DS, I can just take us on a DS ride on the numerous dirt roads in the area. A 200 mile route would not be very hard to do.

The SHNF ranger station said the multi-use trails are currently closed. They may be open this weekend if it doesn't rain again, but the forecast isn't promising.
Since my KLX isn't street legal and my KLR is in still in New Orleans, I won't be able to participate in a DS ride either.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but if the trails remain closed I may see if Beaumont MX is open.

How did you get ahold of them? I have called sunday and today after hours I guess and cant get an answer. There used to be an answering machine that you could get to tell you if the trails are open or not.

Someone finally answered after my third attempt. The answering machine never did pickup to give the trail status.

Here's the number I used: 1-888-361-6908

:tab Absolutely beautiful here today!! I've been walking around our property (all woods), and the sand is nicely packed but not real wet. If the trails are like this... it would be PERFECT!! Maybe another five degrees would be nice though as it is a wee chilly and damp.

Any plans for meeting place and time at the trailhead instead of Scott's? Of course, if trails are closed and alternative plans take place then meet at Scott's. What about plans for meeting up to ride there.... I'm in the Cyrpess area (NW Houston)? Maybe meet somewhere along 249 and ride up the back roads.

If we do ride the trails, did anyone ever decide which trailhead? There is one on the East side and two on the West side that I know of. All are about the same time/distance from my place.

Who all from the Dallas area is going anyway? Anybody want to split gas? I've got a open spot on my trailer and I'm leaving as soon as I can get away Friday afternoon/evening. Probabbly spend the night somewhere near Scott's in order to make hooking on Sat morning easier...

I'd be up for that on a future trip if you decide to trailer down there again. For this weekend I think it's going to be enough effort just to make it to the Pie Run.

Just watched the weather and I know it is still over 3 days away and anything can change but all three channels are saying a 40% chance of rain Friday night and at least 60% chance on Saturday (ABC says 70%).

Bummer.

Good that means it will be nice and sunny with a few clouds and very little
wind ;-)

Man, I'm going to have buy a trailer so that I can get to these rides.
this forest looks really great.
Do we have anything like this around Dallas.... maybe not forest, but a place
with lots of single track like this?? My XR arrives either next week or early
the week after that... I'm going to need some places to go.

This place is 1-1/2 hours north of Dallas:

One of the guys on this board was telling us a few weeks ago about taking his KLR up there. Personally, I think a 650 would be a handful there, but it's a ton O fun for sure...

There's also Rocky Ridge NE of Sanger. More sedate, and some really nasty stuff too if you want to push it a bit. 3 really fun hill climbs too. 35 N to Sanger, W on 455, N on 51 and you'll drive right past it on the left. Watch for the signs. My favorite as it's 80% the challenge of Red River and 1 hour closer... :)

Thanks guys, keep 'em coming. I don't mind a 2 hour (max) ride to a ride :rider:
Anything further than that and it's a bit far to push the bike home if you
wreck it on the real part of the ride
Anything further and I'll have to trailer it.
Anyone know where to get a cheap trialer, or is it just easier to rent a Home
Depot trailer for the day??

Harbor Freight has a 48" X 96" trailer for $215, but you have to assemble it and add the plywood decking. It comes with tail lights and folds for easy storage. Check out their other models too.

Wow, thats a great deal. Slap a deck on it and 3 tracks (for single or 2 bikes)
and away you go - thanks a million for that link!

Bleh. Intellicast is still showing rain Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for Huntsville and Saturday and Sunday for Houston. :(

Scott, looks like I'm gonna sit this one out since driving that far without being able to hit the trails isn't my idea of fun. It's worth the drive for off-road, but gravel/back road DS stuff I can get up here. Not one of your rides for sure, but not the drive either... :)

Might just hit Rocky Ridge up here or the Pie Run to Edom instead...

It'll be a long haul for a rainy ride Scott. Besides Trailwings do not like mud
and I'll still be on the DR till next month. excuses excuses... sorry, count me out too. I think I'll stay home and re-organize the garage, I don't know How I'm going to fit 2 bikes a boat and my car in there
looks like maybe the car gets to park outside till I sell the DR....?

According to weather.com, Huntsville has an 80% chance of T-storms on Sat (as of 3pm Wed). So, at this point I would have to say that if I do come, it will be in a cage, just to discuss AZ...

You guys, and gals, are killing me. First time is a weekend I gotta work. :miffed: Then it gets rained out and I am sorta felling sorry that you can't ride, well not a bunch, maybe just a little. Then you start talking about a different weekend and that's a weekend I gotta work.

I can go either Feb. 4 or Feb. 18 Come on I gotta brand new 14t sprocket and Cheng Shen knobbies that I need to try out.
