View Full Version : Austin Area Meet and Greet?

How about some faces for the names? How about meeting at a coffee shop or resteraunt and meeting everyone in the area? I'm open to a day and time and probably have more flexibility than most due to my work schedule (at least until January). Riding is always an option as well, but I like to meet people first :chug:

I wouldn't mind. I'm chained to the office desk through this Friday, but open to hooking up with folks over the holiday week (though that might be busy for some ;) )....

That would be a nice thing to do. No, riding for me, no bike yet :( Hopefully, I can find a job after the holidays, then I can start heading towards getting that bike.

I will not be available between Christmas and New Years. Too much family scattered in West Texas and Oklahoma.

:bigokay: Sounds like a great idea to me. Unfortunately, like Paul I am pretty much locked in at work during the week and now have to spend this weekend fixing the cooling system on my truck before we head out for the Holidays in CA. So it looks like first week of '04 or any other time in January works best for me.

Keep this thread going, would love to see how many we can get together. Maybe even plan a few rides while we are at it.

How about the Salt Lick out on FM1826 one Sunday afternoon when the weather gets nice?

Tourmeister

:tab In my experience, here's what generally has to happen. One of you will just have to make plans, post them here, and then see who shows up ;-) Otherwise it just won't happen.

:tab Don't let the weather be an issue! If it sucks, just cage it and go meet some folks. You'll still have plenty to B.S. about even without the bikes there.

Adios,

Well I definitely want to do this and the Salt Lick would be a great idea (just have to get there a little early on Sunday, to beat the church crowd).

Cant do it this weekend though, in-laws in town from FLA and with the baby on the way, begging out would not be a good idea.

Maybe we can come up with something for next week. What do people think? We got Salt Lick on Sunday or Maybe CHuy's North (near Lone Star) or Angies on Burnet (near Cycle Gear) on Saturday. Open to any other ideas too.

arwhite
01-22-2004, 03:28 PM
Maybe something more central like Chuy's or Shady Grove on Barton Springs or Guero's on South Congress? However, the problem with anyting "in town" is the ride there will suck big time due to all the traffic. The nice thing about the Salt Lick is the ride out is very nice and they have plenty of parking available.

Anyway, someboy else will need to put a stake in the ground on this one. My schedule is too unpredictable these days to plan more than a day or two in advance. I'll try to make it if I can though.

The Austin Motorcycle Riders group from Yahoo! Groups has a meeting every Wednesday night from 6-8pm at the Rudy's BBQ up in Round Rock on I-35. From the emails it seems to be a mix of riders with both cruiser (H-D and Metric) and sportbikes.

That might be a way for some locally to meet and maybe recruit some new people to this site. Maybe something in the evening during the week would work for some in town and then have a regional type of meeting at the Salt Lick on the weekend in a couple of weeks.

Just an idea to throw out there. :chug:

Cool,

Didn't know about this one... Put me in the unpredictable group, two kids in diapers makes life a little hectic, and unfortuanately motorcycling has taken a back seat.

This is up in my neck of the woods though, which makes it a little easier. Hate central or down south events as it just means a ride on I35  . Half the people can't drive, and the other half are experiementing with drugs for the first time :angryfir:

There's also the Tuesday night bike nights at AF1. 'Course I'm partial to those clowns, but that's another "standing" possibility. They are right down the street from Threadgills if we want to play like we're "Ride to Eat" Gold Wing folks...

I live in far south Austin (between Stassney and Wm. Cannon, east of Manchaca) and tend to avoid I-35 at all costs. When we headed to OKC last friday, I took Mo-Pac, we almost always take Mo-Pac. Last night coming at 10pm, then we can take I-35.

Adios,

Well, you may have too.

How about just meeting Saturday for a short ride somewhere for lunch. Saturday's forecast is suppose to be mostly sunny, in the lower 70's. Knock on wood, b'cuz we all know how Texas weather changes from day to day.

Since I am making the suggestion, does not mean that I will be leading the ride. :) Volunteers to lead ride? Any suggestions...input?

Here's a suggestion: How about meeting at the corner of 620/2222 (near that BBQ/convenient store place). Head out Lime Creek Rd. to Marble Falls for lunch? Meet around 10:00am/stands up at 10:30am. We will call this the short "Meet and Greet" Ride. :-D

I hope you all get this settled soon, I am looking forward to getting out and meeting you all! I have been lurking off and on, for the last 6 months or so, with the odd comment here or there. I finally made it out here, from CA a few weeks ago. Living in THE center of TX, Brady. Looks like Austin is about 2 hrs away, if the weather is cooperating, I should be able to make a 10 am rendevouz, if not, think I'll just drive the cage, to get out and look around a bit. I'm not really part of the "In crowd" yet, most of you don't know me at all, but, my vote goes for the Salt Lick.....I've heard so much about it, that, I just GOTTA get there soon to try it out! Regardless, looking fwd to meeting and greeting, if the details can get worked out!

I would love to ride up to Austin this weekend. I only have two problems, my spousal unit is in Spain and I will be one of the bicyclist attempting to get in shape for the annual everybody ride to Austin bicycle ride. Otherwise known as the MS150. The largest ride of it't type in the country.

Have some BBQ for me and take a few high speed corners for me as well. Riding the tandem recumbent with my 10 year old daughter, I doubt we will get above 20 mph for any extended period of time.

Adios,

Hey Scott,

Did you mean this up-coming weekend or the first weekend in February? I am outta town for the next couple of days but could be up for a short ride for lunch either Saturday or Sunday (although Sunday would be preferred). Salt Lick would be my first suggestion and then a ride down towards Wimberly/Canyon Lak and back (or maybe do this first). there are some great little roads down there.

Paul, do Sundays work better for you?

Anyway, I am up for anything and will probably go out Sunday either way, so let me know if anyone else wants to hook up.

Salt Lick and ride down towards Wimberly/Canyon Lake would work for me. I just want to get out and ride. However, Saturday is a better day for me than Sunday (Super Bowl Sunday!!!) :-D

I will probably get out and ride on Saturday anyway. It looks like all of our schedules vary from one another. :|

I guess we just need to pick a Saturday or Sunday once/twice a month and see who just shows up. Or, if anyone is heading out for an impromptu ride, post a message and see if anyone else would like to join you.

I do think that it might be better to get out and ride before lunch though, to beat the "Coming Home From Church" crowd.

:tab This really is what has to happen. If you keep trying to find a day when everyone can make it, you'll never do anything :-P We do our bike night at King's every Thursday even though it is not great for some people. I just set a time and then see who shows up. So far we have had a pretty good regular showing of people. I do the same thing for rides. I figure if I am the one putting it together, the timing will be convenient for me and anyone else is welcome to come along. Works so far :-) Some times I ride with just one other person and some times I ride with eight or nine people, you never know. That is part of the fun.

Hmmmm,

Another thought, for a slightly bigger meet? Anybody up for a Round Rouck Express game. Great riding to get here, and it's baseball as it was meant to be.

The riding would suck for me (it's about 5 miles from the house), but I'd take the RV and start cooking burgers.

Just a thought. Some non-racing weekend in April or May...

Sadly, I have to *$&% work Sunday morning, TCEA Conference starts Monday.

I like Tourm's idea for breakfast at the Oasis (didn't even know they did b'fast) on Sunday. Just waiting for a time.

Another good place for breakfast is the Sunset restaurant in Blanco. ;)

But the Oasis would be fine. BTW, can Oasis Bluff Rd. off of Bullock Hollow NW of Four Points get me to the Oasis restaurant? Is it ok for non dual-purpose bikes ;) ? Was just curious about taking a different route to the place...

The Oasis for breakfast is not far for me, but it's slab slab slab all the way.
Loop whatever (360 or Mopac) to 2222 to Four Points is all mega highway. I didn't know Oasis did breakfast, but whatever.
Bluebonnet Cafe? Their food is not that great. The ride makes up for it since 1431 comes out right next door (almost)
Then again- I am spoiled. I can make a better breakfast than the Bluebonnet and their pies are OK. I would like to find a great place to eat in Marble Falls.
As it stands now- Breakfast at Oasis is cool. but then, where??

7:30am on a Sunday

I try not to see that time of the morning on a Sunday. In OKC I went to the Saturday night service so I didn't have to get up on Sunday morning. Even when we go now it is usually the 10:30 or later service (depending upon which church we go to). I don't even try to see that time during the week

I don't know of many places out in that area (I live in far south Austin). With The Oasis opening at 11am and it being of a more fancy kind of place (with comensurate prices) can anyone think of some other possibilities? Something around 9-9:30ish?

****, I can cook a better meal than just about every restaurant I go to, Chris! Actually, the western omelet at the Bluebonnet is pretty good. I like the atmosphere there though. Anyhow, I hear the Hill Country Cupboard in Johnson City is pretty decent. As for here in Austin, Jim's down here in Oak Hill is okay for breakfast. Guero's on South Congress is good too. Trudy's at Lamar and Ben White was pretty good the last time I was there several months back. I had breakfast at the IHOP at 183 and 620 recently and it wasn't too bad either, but I like pancakes a lot! There's a pretty good place for breakfast down in Wimberley too, but I can't remember the name of it.

Don't know if I can hold out until 9:00-9:30 to eat breakfast though. I'm not much of a morning person myself, but I've usually eaten and got going by 7:00 or so most days.

Howdy,

:tab If you get to the Oasis around 10:30-10:45am, they will go ahead and let you in and find a seat. If you get there much after 11:00am on a pretty day, they fill up quickly. The food is nothing to rave about but they have a great location ;-)

:tab Saturday morning we'll be leaving from Will's place around 10:00am. We'll head West. I don't have a route planned yet. It will be a surprise :-P Will probably come back into Austin on the South side around Hwy 71 and Bee Cave.

I'm not real wild about getting up real early to do anything, even riding  Also, for me, Sunday won't really be a ride in the Austin area thing. I'll eat, hang out a short while and then be riding back to Huntsville. Of course there is nothing to stop the rest of you from riding on Sunday ;-) I'm not real wild about riding many of the roads right around Austin because there is always so much freaking traffic  I guess living here in the little hamlet of Huntsville has spoiled me  I am not set on the Oasis. Sounds like a good weekend! Two quick questions, first, what kind of riding are you planning on? Is it going to be a liesurely stroll, a set of brisk sprints, or a non-DPS sanctioned peg dragging endurance race? (hey, I gotta ask!) I would love to ride, but I haven't had a lot of time in the saddle of the Bandit, we're still getting to know one another, you might say. I'm a long time competent rider, just haven't had a lot of miles logged the last few years due to work. Should have no problem keeping up, untill parts start digging asphalt. That said, I have no intention of holding ya'll back, if you are out to run wide open!

Second question, I'm about 130 miles from Leander, tentatively thinking of riding over Fri after work, and hoteling it through Sun. Never been to Leander, is there a clean, inexpensive hotel anywhere near? Another option, may be to find you all on the route somewhere, sat sometime. Any details on route, or is it going to be a fluid route, figure it out as ya go? Thanks!

I will try to be there Sunday morning, but in a metallic red F-150. It shouldn't be too hard to distinguish, it will probably be the only one with OU stuff on it.
No bike yet.....I would just like to meet some of y'all.

Change of plans, for me. Just checked Yahoo weather, and, while I love the forcast, high sixties, it is still a bit too chilly for me, since I only have a jacket with me. My riding pants are still at my place in California. I don't think I would enjoy a 300 mile day, without the proper gear especially in the morning, and later evening. Might cage it to breakfast on Sunday though!

:tab The riding will NOT be of the peg draggin variety. It will be brisk but not of the "go to jail" type ;-) I typically run around 75-80mph indicated in the open stuff and slow down for the twisty stuff. I'm not interested in playing cat & mouse with the LEO's. With the pretty weather I am sure they will be out and about.

Is it going to be a liesurely stroll, a set of brisk sprints, or a non-DPS sanctioned peg dragging endurance race?

Er, well, what I consider a heavy leanin', super-fast pace is what other consider parking lot pace, so if you wanna hang back, that's where I'll likely be... :chug:

Andy can probably advise better, but the last few times I've taken 12 to Wimberley, there's been an LEO either on the road or on the side pointing a radar gun. Pity, too, cuz that's where the best twisties are; 'course, that's why he's there. Maybe pre-9:00 he's not expecting much fast traffic.

Actually I have seen relatively few LEOs out this way and ride it quite often. Yes 1825 does get one every now and then but I have noticed that with all the traffic going to the Salt Lick you are usually close enough to the posted limit that it isnt a problem. As for 12, I usually take Elder Hill Rd from Driftwood (twisty and no traffic) to 12 so I cut off a lot of trvel on this road and I dont see the LEOs until you get near Wimberely.

BTW: if anyone wants to meet up at my casa in Oak Hill before heading down let me know. Takes about 30-40 minutes from my place to D-town Wimberley.

:tab So when I peeked out the window this morning, it was thick and gray, temps in the upper 40's :| Seems the weather channel got it wrong again  No one showed up, which is what I realistically expected for Saturday. No biggie though, Will and I just hit the bike shops, picked up some parts and supplies, and generally have been goofing off all day. We will still be going to Rudy's BBq on North 183 at 7:00pm and will likely ride as it seems to be getting nicer outside finally.

:tab If it is not to bad in the morning, we will still be heading down to the Cafe in Wimberly for the breakfast meetup. If anyone needs to reach me, my cell is 936-293-6107.

Howdy,

:tab Will and I did get out riding today. Once it cleared out and got pretty around 3:00pm, we headed out to Marble Falls, down Fm 2147 to Hwy 71, then out to FM 962 and we ran that back to Bee Cave. While on 962 we stopped and a couple on an SV650 stopped when I flagged them down. Had to give them a TWT card  They were Stewart and Maria, nice folks. Came up RR 620 with a guy riding what looked like a 80's era Yamaha two stroker. It was tiny and loud, a pipe on each side. Smelled too :P We lost him when we made the turn to head down Lime Creek road. Another rider on an Aprilia was coming at us and gave a timely LEO warning. APD was shooting radar from behind some bushes. We were not goffing off or anything, but the speed limit right there was 40mph and we were doing maybe 48-50mph on a straight section. The rest of the ride down LCR was awesome. The road was clean, no traffic, dogs or deer. The two cars we got behind actually pulled over and let us pass. We made sure to pass nicely and wave. It was as the sun was setting and the sunset what very nice. I just could not find a good place to stop to get a picture!

:tab Ugghh... just checked Weatherunderground and they are showing it will be in the upper 40's to low 50's tomorrow early, also a possibility of showers and dense fog :? Looks like I will really have to bundle up to get down there for breakfast. I don't know if Will is going to be up for such an early ride  We'll have to leave here at the unnatural hour of 8:00am to get down there by 9:00

:tab The urge to sleep in is overwhelming, especially since I am stuffed with BBQ right now  Achim came up from Buda and met us at Rudy's and we chowed down. That place rocks!

:tab I'm going to wait until the morning peep out the window to make a call on whether I am going to head down. If I am not there by 9:30 at the latest, please consider me to have wussed out. I'll be bundling up for the three hour ride home :suicide:

I was gonna meet up with you guys in the morning but I was let down by the forcast also. I will also check the FEEL of the weather in the morning. Any other guys meeting up in Wimberly in the morning? I will be leaving from South Austin if any one wants to hook up. I will check here before I leave.

I'll be the BIG guy on a Blue/Silver Busa.

Well, speaking for myself, I had a good bit of fun meeting up with some TWTers in Wimberley.

I took Loop 1 (drone) down to 1826 to 150 to 12. It was a little chillier that I had expected it to be, but I was pretty much by myself, and it was a nice little wakeup ride.

Present at the Cypress Creek Cafe were:

arwhite
bluedogok
Mr. Brownstone
SVInAustin
varnado

and me.

We had a nice breakfast and good moto-conversation. Occasionally, folks talked about many previous motorcycles, reminding me that there are folks much more addicted than I am to this stuff ;).

After breakfast, arwhite and bluedogok headed out, and the rest of us agreed to follow Andy around a few roads. We took 12 South to 32, at a nice little pace (I was last in line). Right at the devil's Backbone, I sensed all 4 of us were read to have some fun through those few bends, but suddenly everyone slowed significantly, patting the tops of their helmets. If it was LEO, I never saw him.

We then turned off to 473, which got us nicely down to 281, where we went south and picked up 473 again. I'd forgotten how pleasant 473 was, and today, it was a bit different, with a pretty good fog. There was still enough visibility to enjoy things, and it was nice feeling to listen to the v-twin and sail through the mist at a nice lean angle.

Things changed just before Kendalia, though. The road got a little wetter and we all had small moments arcing over Krause Creek (mine was a little front-end loss, which got a verbal "Whoa" from me.

At that point, Mr. Brownstone turned off to 3160 to head back to S.A. and only a few hundred yards later, Andy pulls over. Turns out he and varnado's visors were tough to see through with the fog, so we agreed to turn around and make our way back 473 to Blanco.

There, we sought a convenience store for some hot chocolate, talked bikes a bit more, then headed out.

We took 165 out of Blanco, and the one big sweeper that we all blitzed through was almost worth making the whole trip. :)

Andy led us off of 165 to River Road back to Dripping Springs. It's a bumpy ride in a lot of places, but really scenic.

We parted ways in Dripping Springs, and I took the tried and true 12 to 3238 (Hamilton Pool Rd.) to 17 for a mile or so to 2244 (Bee Cave Rd.). I love 2244's sweepers. From there it was 360 to 2222 (had to get a few more twisties in), and back to Round Rock.

It was great meeting everybody who showed up. Tourmeister was missed, but only slightly dis'd ;). The bikes of the attendees were awesome; everywhere I looked there was a VFR or ST1300 or 'Busa.... drool

Let's do it again!

I had a great time meeting, eating and jawing with you guys. We'll definitely have to do it again soon. I'm not much on group riding, but I do like riding somewhere to meet and eat (can a Goldwing be far in my future?). :-D

We need to set us up a weekly bike night or breakfast gathering. Any ideas?

It was fun mmeting a few more of the other folks that are on the site. It was a little wet and cold so I dont think I will make any comments about the TourM being, as he called it, a Wuss. Well maybe just one. :P

Breakfast was good and it is always fun to hang out and talk bikes. Here are a couple of photos from this morning. A couple with all of us (well, except me) and one with Randy (varnado) and Paul (Buck000) after having a little warm-up before our return to Austin.

It was great meeting you guys today. I normally don't ride in weather like this morning but I'm glad I did. Enjoyed the conversation at breakfast and food was pretty good too. The ride was great, the weather was not. The best part of the ride was how everyone gave each other plenty of space. I felt very comfortable riding with you guys. I can't wait for the warmer weather. We will need to get together again.
Would have been great to meet you Scott, but I totally understand considering you had a long ride to get home. Maybe next time.

BTW... Nice pics SV........

And now... back to the point of this thread... Are you guys ever going to be able to organize any kind of regular get together? Remember, it doesn't have to a a single day when every single person can make it. Just pick a day of the week and start meeting. Maybe do a South side and North side thing. We do ours every Thursday just because it's easy to remember :-P Doing it once a month really limits the opportunity for people to make it if they just happen to be busy that day. Perhaps you could start by doing one every other week?

:tab By the way, Chris in Buda, Achim Felber lives in Buda as well. He has a VFR and a Speed Triple. Great guy and very fun to ride with.

Don't think so... :-)

A bunch already exist in Austin:

* Tuesday evenings at AF-1
* Saturday evenings at either Mozart's on Lake Austin Blvd. or Fazoli's in Round Rock
* Thursday evenings at Jake's or somesuch (big restaurant on I-35 access road just north of the 290 interchange).

I'd personally dig the occasional Sunday morning/noon b'fast/lunch meet somewheres...

* Thursday evenings at Jake's or somesuch (big restaurant on I-35 access road just north of the 290 interchange).
Thursday evenings there are bike nights at Jack's Backyard, on the east side of IH-35 just south of St. Johns Street (Northbound on 35, take the St. Johns exit and move to right lane of frontage road. Southbound on 35, take the 290 E/FM2222 exit and circle back onto northbound frontage road) and also at Hill's Cafe on South Congress, south of Ben White Blvd.

Both are sponsored by competing Harley dealerships, but the one at Jack's seems to gather all sorts of bikes - not just Harleys. The one at Hill's I haven't been to, yet, but Austin H-D's website says it's open to all comers.

Note, too, that for the Jack's Backyard thingie, they might still be having some sort of deal where you get a magic ticket from Wood's or Central Texas H-D, which is eligable for some sort of prize on the following Thursday. I dunno if it's still going on, though.

Yeah, they give out door-prizes to ticket-holders, but tickets may be available at Jack's on Thursday. You can call CTHD @ 512 973-8521 for info.

The same thing happens at Hill's Cafe, but you can go to AHD's (http://www.austinharley-davidson.com/event_calendar.asp) and click on the calendar to get a printable ticket for that week's giveaway. This week, for instance, they're giving away jewelry.[/b]

Just FYI, those guys - the ones I've met so far - were a pretty welcoming crowd, in spite of the fact that I wasn't riding dual-sport, didn't have the same gear they all had, etcetera. A lot of them seem to have non-d-s bikes, as well. 8-)

Of course, they might not have been as welcoming if I'd shown up on the Harley the first time out! Maybe save that for when a few of 'em know me a little better! ;-)
