They must have had a good crowd out there last Sunday judging by the number of trucks/trailers I saw heading South on FM 149 loaded with bikes! It was awesome weather. I still have not made it out there since they reversed the trails.

There was pretty good crowd but not too many to get in each others way. You are right, it was great riding weather. :rider:

Man, after the rain the last few days, I wonder how it is out there right now... Wonder what it might be like this weekend? If the SHNF is closed, I wonder if we could get everyone over at Outlaw instead? Think the owner would let us do the group thing there?

As far as the rain and the trails, they should be prime as long as it falls over a period of time and not all at once.

Not sure I will be available this weekend and that would be one of his requirements, that at least one member is there. There are several other members that are also here so may be one of them will see this and make some contacts.

I was wondering if I might be able to tag along as your guest sometime? I'm from New Orleans but temporarily working out of Beaumont right now. Our department will probably be here another 2-4 months so I don't want to commit to a full year membership.

Chris,

I would be more than happy to have you ride as my guest. I'll have to see when I will be riding out there again but it should be pretty soon. I'll look at my schedule and let you know when I'm available to host a guest. The guest rider fees are $10.00 per day so it makes it very affordable.

I really appreciate it. I left my name and number on their answering machine this morning. Maybe they'll work out a month-by-month deal with me. I'm hoping to hear back from them today, just in case there's a chance they'll let me ride this weekend.
Every other week I go back to New Orleans to see the family. That leaves me a couple weekends a month to try and ride, and I want to take advantage of it while I'm here. The weather didn't cooperate this time closing the nat'l forest trails in TX and LA.
If only I had the KLR up here too. At least I could ride somewhere since the weather wouldn't be an issue. It needs to be washed anyway and the only time it gets cleaned is when I ride in the rain.

GB, the owner is good about returning your phone calls, it just might take a little while if he is out on the property or away from the phone.

What is the membership fee?

Hemibee
02-03-2006, 10:31 PM
There is two different memberships available and the price of each reflects the type membership.

Outlaw Trax Member - $780.00 per year - http://www.outlawtrax.com/

MSRA Member - $370 per year - http://www.msra-cycle.org/

Both memberships have the same rights as to use of the property. MSRA has additional responsibilities for the reduced membership fees.

MSRA member maintain the trails and will host a STORM Series race or two on the property. The only times Outlaw Trax is not open to members are during wet conditions. The property is closed for race weekends (only race bikes allowed on the trails) but all other activities are still available on race weekends.

There is a bike night tonight (Thu 2/8) in Montgomery. Head West on Hwy 105 until you reach FM 149 at Montgomery. It is 13 miles from the 336 loop to FM 149. Hang a left at the light on FM 149, go about a block, and Phil's is on your right. They will be meeting at 7:00pm. It is a mix of street/dirt riders depending on who shows up. If you are up near Willis, you could run 1097 over to FM 149 and then down 149 to the light at 105. Go straight through the light and Phil's is on the right just past the gas station.

If you new guys are thinking of joining.... DO IT! This place is a lot of fun. I need to take Pop's up on his offer again and get back out there. The only reason I did not join is because it is a little to far for me and the wife already hates my dirty hobby.

Oh yeah great seeing you again Pop's! This is 2 times in the past 2 weeks I have seen you at a race. I was working that nasty washed out creek section at Skull Creek for the HS. You know that washout that went up that hill and then put you on the road. I was cheering you on once I figured out that was you.

Are you looking for a riding area to "join" or a one day play day? Outlaw is basically a membership only park. Although you might could get a member to sponsor you for a day ride.

USMCG_Spyder
11-01-2007, 05:57 AM
My membership would depend on how the riding is. If it's dudes screamin' around on dirtbikes at warp 9 my Ural will be out of place. I may drift up there one day and have a look around. I looked at a satellite image of the place, doesn't look overly huge.

Hemibee
11-01-2007, 06:06 AM
The trails are not seen very well on the satellite images. Without a member with you, you will not be able to get past the gate. Like Pops said Outlaw Trax isn't a day use park, it is set up for yearly memberships. Individuals can ride the park as guest of members or can arrange a tour of the property thru the Outlaw Trax website.

Just noticed the reference to the Ural, is that with sidecar? Some of the trails may be a real challenge with a sidecar, others are 4-wheeler friendly.

Yeah, I saw that on their site. I figure I'll ride up there and get the lay of the land, and if it looks interesting I'll beg one of y'all to tag along some time and see what the score is.

Not sure about warp 9 but you're close!:-P

But that said, there is all level of riders from mini's and beginners to ladies and we all co-exist just fine.

As hemi said, some of the trails would be a challenge for you while others would be quite enjoyable.

I'd like to see Outlaw sometime just to see what all the hubbub is about.

This is more my kind of membership:

SHNF = 80 miles of single track for a $25/year multi-use pass and $7 TPW sticker for the fork! I rarely come across more than 2 other riders in a day.

Need a track? 3 Palms = $15/day...no membership fee. Beware of the little runts on their 80s...they can fly.

Yup, I'm with you there. Outlaw is a bit rich for me seeing how close it is to some really great trail, even if the SHNF is a bit sanitized for my protection. I have ridden outlaw a few times and always had a blast, and would buck up for a membership in a minute if the forest wasn't avalable. Outlaw is also more kid friendly than the forest by far, and I don't sweat leaving ramps, chairs and coolers unattended while riding like I do at SHNF. I can ride all day in the forest and never see the same tree twice.

First a disclaimer, I have no finanicial interest in Outlaw!!!!!!!!!

I use to feel the same way but some things changed my mind!
1- 2 way trails, couple of incidents too close for comfort.
2-Not young kid friendly at all.
3-Have to worry about your "stuff" while riding.
4-Sometimes get tired of the sand and roots.
5-Even not seeing the same tree in a day, I knew them all pretty well since I have ridden there since 1975.
6-Simi concern, even tho not having personal problem yet, the lawman seems to get picky once in a while.
7- Probably the biggest issue is some years it might be closed for 1/2 the year due to wet(damp) trails.
8-Also iffy in hunting season which starts this w/e.

But enjoy the forest and I argee, I'm glad it's there!

PS, Outlaw isn't perfect either!
1-There is the occasional landowner issues.
2-expensive
3-occasionally closes for wet trails too.

Hi.

My two kids started riding recently. SHNF costs me $15 per day now for three of us.
When you join outlaw via MSRA, it costs $375 per year, which is $31.25 for all the family member throughout year. You will need to maintain part of the trail for the discount, but it may not be a bad idea depends on how much you ride.

I picked up a 4 wheeler for the wife and a used Honda xr200r for me, the spark arrestor is missing on the xr200, so when I get that replaced I want to go to SHNF and Outlaw. I used to ride 4 wheelers but the dirt bike is new to me. But while riding I can't stop grinning. Fun stuff.

I understand that statement, my Dad died the night my first son was born, long night. Plus he never got to see either one of my kids!

Treasure the time. I do everything I can with my grandkids. Heck just had the 8 month over for an all nighter. And he slept all night, whoo-hoo!
