After opening presents and stuffing ourselves with turkey, mashed tater, and spicy corn casserol, I went for my anual X-mas ride and decided to hit my nemisis...CO 310 in Llano. I've written about this road before how I went down twice in the mud. What I haven't mentioned is that I went down a second time while crossing the low bridge over Perdenales River. You see, this bridge was covered with about 4 inches of water but the real problem was the 1/2 inch of green algae underneath. Well, I almost made it across and wouldn't ya know it, the back end swings around and the bike and I go sliding. The good and bad. The good was that the bike stayed on the bridge. The bad, I didn't. Slid right off into the river which was about 3 ft. deep at the time. Here's a pict after I picked up the bike...yes, the bike is pointed the way I just came from. I had about 25 feet to go.

So, X-mas day. The temp is in the low 60s and extremely overcast but it doesn't look like it's going to rain. I put on the gear and head to Marble Falls on 1431. Hardly no traffic and I'm ripping through countryside. Man I love this road. I get to Marble Falls, cross the lake and head out to 310. On the way there's this huge granite rock near Horseshoe Bay. I've always wanted to ride up there and take some picts...

As I'm heading out I run into a few of the Texas rats. This one is VERY big.

I get to the 310 turn off and head onto the dirt. I've still got the knobbies on the GS and there's no mud. This is GS riding! I go thru the gears and look down. ****! I'm doing 70! I get to the top of a hill and stop for a picture...

Just on the other side is the bridge. The river is really low. Barely any water going over the bridge. Cool. Just in case I'll take it easy. So I ride over and when I hit the water I see it...thick green algae ready to send me in the drink again.

I'm standing on the pegs and I can feel the bike start sliding to the left. Not again! So I gently stop, and almost walk the bike over this stuff. I make it across and turn around to get a couple shots...

I continue on till I reach pavement. Just before is a couple of hunting cabins that look like they've been there since the 1800s. Wow, someone has put new windows up. Weird mix.

I've made it. I've finally ridden 310 without going down! Now just to make it back. As I'm going back, I get into a standoff...of the bovine type. There're cows all over the place. Hmm...these cows look very familiar. I think they're the same ones that surrounded me when I went down in the mud.

Ahh, nothing like exorcising a demon!

Merry X-mas and best wishes to everyone!

When are you going to do this ride on the DRZ?
