Most of the FM roads around Hico have nice wide grassy shoulders where you could pitch a tent.

Loud sudden noises in the middle of the night don't bother you, do they?

Both Dinosaur Valley State Park and Cleburne State Park are within easy distance of Hico, Rebecca. But I don't know the rates and I haven't camped at either of them, so I can't provide a personal recomendation.

Barring any unforseen circumstances, Allison and I will be at this one, Chris, so please add us to the list.

They do about 5 blocks away from the Outrigger Reef hotel, Waikiki. I rented a CBR929RR there in 2000. In all honesty, I had more fun on the Aprilia scooter I rented when I went back a few months later.:rider:

That could work. For one night, I don't really need electricity or running water. I love the idea of camping where there aren't familied running around and teenagers having parties all night.

More info please - is it a park or just a riverbank? Is it legal to camp there? How far from the Koffee Kup?

Just bought a Texas Parks and Wildlife pass this weekend ($60 for a year),
and I plan on doing some State park hoping this Spring break and through out the summer.
It cost about 6 bucks to gain entry to the parks and about 8 bucks additional to camp there.
The entry fee is waived if you have the pass, and a pass is good for as many people as you can fit in (or on in this case) a vehicle.
If you look up Texas Parks and wildlife on the web they will have each park listed on the map there with the address and phone number to each site and you can get a good idea of where they are in reference to where you want to ride. Another good idea is to look at Corp of Eng. parks they are located all over the state as well... Good Luck with it

Ohh Yeah I am going to try and make it, but don't count me as a firm yes yet...

I believe I still hold the record for that don't I?

As to the camping for anyone who's on a DS it's a nice detour if nothing else. Leave Hico on hwy 6 towards Waco, take the first dirt road to the right out of town and keep taking rights as they become available. Some nice scenery (depending on the time of year) and a neat river crossing.

Keep an eye on the pie run thread. The normal meeting spot for the greater Austin area is at the Taco Cabana north of 1431 in Cedar Park. There are usually a few riders (sometimes many) meeting up there.

been to Hico before let us know about how long it takes to get there.

Takes about two hours to get from Cedar Park to Hico if you go 183 to 281. This is a very boring route, so I'd like to find something a bit more inventive. But if your short on time, the direct route is best.

Okay, seriously, Dan, are you planning on coming around the north side of the Metromess, through the middle of it, or swinging around south? Just about any way you look at it, the first parts going to be slab. But from the southwest side of Fort Worth, let's get you on a route that'll do more than wear out the middle of your tires.

It is a bunch of trouble, but if you look back at the previous Hico Pie Runs - all in this section, you will see several route options.

As the time draws near, there will probably be several groups form at different locations. Venus is one of them.

As far as coming from Austin, I'm going to take 1431 to hook up to 16, which is also fairly straight but was rated one of the best roads in Texas, north to just south of Smithville then head over to Hico on country road of choose. That way I can get the straighter roads out of the way before the goes away for a sportier bike.

The wife and I will stop at the TC on 183 and 1431 for Breakfast around 8AM and leave out around 8:30 for Hico.

Hmmm 1431 to 16 then into Hico? Besides being way out of the way that is not the part of 16 they are talking about being the best in Texas. That part of 16 is south of kerrville to bandara. Slab wise is 183, 281 onto Hico. There are some good back roads around too.

Thanks Kelly and Chuck...I'll check out the other threads and see what they have.

This would be my first long trip on a motorcycle, so I am looking for something doable for a n00b. I have about 800 miles under my belt from commuting to work when I can. I have been on 190 with light traffic and was for the most part comfortable.

I think I could handle cutting across the Metromess to get to roads that have actual curves in them.

Dan, I have to second Chuck's suggestion. If there's a group meeting in Venus, you might try cutting south, picking up Hwy 67 and taking it into Venus to meet up with them. Otherwise, grab a map or your favorite map website/program. Starting at the intersection of I-20 and Hwy 377, start looking for the following:

FM 1187, FM 2331, FM 4, Hwy 167, FM 51, Aledo-Iona Rd., FM 5, FM 1189, FM 1188, FM 2481 out of Bluff Dale, FM 203, FM 927, FM 205.

Now, those aren't necessarily in order. And, connected together, they won't form the most direct route to get down there. But they will take you on some of the better roads in the area. Of course, in the interest of getting down there in time for lunch, you might want to take the straight stuff down and the twisty stuff back. In which case I'd suggest Hwy 377 to Granbury, Hwy 144 to Glen Rose, Hwy 67 west, Hwy 220 to Hico. Or, if you want a middle of the road route, stay on Hwy 144 through Glen Rose to Walnut Springs, then hang a right on FM 927 to Iredell. Then go right on Hwy 6 to Hico. Hope this helps.

Kelly

nKhona
02-17-2006, 08:56 AM
I like the idea of picking a direct route down there and the twisties on the way back.

I just got a Garmin and am waiting on a mount to be delivered. I'll feel alot better about taking the FM roads having that with me. Still need to get some paper maps as back ups.

Once again thanks for the advice!

I would appreciate a "backup" in the event Blue doesn't go to the pie run. Just pm me.
Backup? Why don't you just come down, May-ree? I am sure there are several available back seats on all of those KLRs on the forums! ;-)

Even if you cage down, you would meet friends and it would motivate you to get on two wheels... :rider:

Bill, The only time there was a group was when Dave, me and Jerry went last year. All the other times I was on my own. I'm gonna go unless the weather turns really sour. The ride to Hico is 190 miles from Tyler and I usually leave about 7:30 to 8:00. I always slab straight to Hico and occasionally break the speed limit when safe to do so. On the way back I take a few back roads with lots of sweepers...ok a few sweepers around Cranfills Gap. I definitely kick up the pace through there back to Corsicana then slab back to Tyler. A friend of mine might show also. You and Jessica are welcome to join me if you like.

According to my map, Leander is only 109 miles from Hico. 183 to Copperas Cove, right on 281 to Hico. I don't mind rain too much as long as I can stay warm. When I'm cold AND wet....all bets off. What's really bad is when you go by a car or truck and the spray totally covers your visor. :eek2:

My first ride in the rain was on a V-Star, no windscreen, November 2004 I think. I was on a Poker Run with a small group of folks and while I can't remember the mileage, I know it was over 100 miles in the rain. With the right gear, it's do-able. I didn't have the right gear, so it was kind of miserable. A couple of lessons I picked up...

#1, your first ride in the rain can be a lot less stressful if you're following someone with a lot more experience than you. If you have someone with a similar bike making the corner entry speed judgements for you, especially if they're not trying to drag pegs, it can let you relax a little and focus on just following through the corners. You'd be surprised how much traction a wet street tire still has.

#2, if your rain gear includes both top and bottom pieces (and it should), wear them both. Depending on how hard it's raining, within half an hour of riding with just a rain jacket on, you're going to learn that every drop hitting the front of the jacket is then inclined to roll down into your crotch. This actually looks pretty bad in a really light rain where your thighs don't get too much water because it looks like you peed yourself real good.

#3, if you're moving at 45mph plus and the rain is beading up on your visor, try just turning your head to each side before you try wiping the visor. Most of the water will just roll off sideways when you do that.

#4, even with rain gear, if you've got saddle bags with room for dry socks, etc, pack 'em. Assume you're going to forget some point of entry for the water. Boots with vents that allow in air, allow in water, but usually the vents are an inch or so above the sole, meaning they let you carry an inch or so of water with you. Wet socks suck when combined with wind chill.

#5, if you can't be happy with the ride anymore, cut your losses and take the short way home. Do you really want to waste a day off being unhappy?

Remember, there will always be another Pie Run.

MusicMan754
02-24-2006, 06:01 PM
Would you believe I walked outside today to ride to my inlaws in Alvarado, (my wife and I were going to ride from there to the pie run tomorrow) took it off my rear stand, noticed immediatly something was amis, looked down and the rear tire on my Strom was totally flat?!?! :eek2: Don't remember how that could have happened, didn't remember going over anything that would have caused a flat tire. SO-how about a Sunday afternoon Pie Run, instead? I've called the Koffee Kup and confirmed with them that 14:30 is the best time (post-Church crowd) to arrive. SO-how about a Sunday afternoon Pie Run, instead? I've called the Koffee Kup and confirmed with them that 14:30 is the best time (post-Church crowd) to arrive. I also told them that there may 1 or 2 brave souls that make it through the monsoon. Post here if you're interested in going. I will be elsewhere, but I am happy to update the list for an approximate head count to pass to the restaurant.

Put me down for one VStrom in Hico at 1430.

Well, I am late leaving but I am about to venture out & test my rain gear and Tourance tires. I am going to skip Venus and hit US67 via Mansfield and Keene. Dunno if I'll make it but gonna at least start.

long johns and raingear on standing here watching it rain.
Was about to leave when the thunder and lightning started.
Took that as a hint from the tiki gods that I should wait for another
day to ride.

Got to work tomorrow, but hope you all have lots of (dry) fun.

I am up for the Day After Ride, or perhaps this next weekend.
Cherioer and I may try to ride next weekend.

Graubart's VStrom is back in the shed now. Chuck should be near Cleburne now, in moderate rain.

It was an all-Strom pie run today. Let's see if I can list them all......my apologies for anyone's name I have already forgotten........let's see now....... there was a great looking Red Strom......that was mine....... and there was a nice looking Blue Strom......I think that belonged to some guy named Chuck.

Um, did I mention the Blue Strom? Yes, I did.......so that was it! Red Strom and Blue Strom. :lol2:

I enjoyed today's pie run so much that I think I will do it again tomorrow. :eat:

By the looks of the radar, you had rain all the way home. Glad you made it ok.

Yeah, much more than going down. All-in-all, my raingear worked OK. I didn't see the temp go above 51 or so, and I wasn't toasty warm but I wasn't miserable either. :rider:

Now downshifting on 917 really sloshed around the water in my boots! :lol2:

Really glad to meet you, Bill. Enjoyed talking with ya about Comanche Peak and motorcycle stuff. have fun (again) tomorrow - you'll see what the rest of the crowd is like. And thanks for lunch - I'll repay ya when we go for BBQ!

Hey, WC, both Mary Beth and the fella at the counter that I think was the owner both mentioned that you had called and updated about today and also about tomorrow. I think they really appreciated it! http://www.texasarlingtoncs.us/pics/smilies/righton.gif

Well, even though there was just all both of us for the Saturday Pie Run, I started a thread here (http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8002).

Now, I expect the folks on the Sunday Pie Run to add to it so it doesn't look completely anemic...

Is this a trick you play on new members!? I already fell for the TWO person pie run, in the rain no less!

Now I guess you think the new guy will fall for the ONE person pie run! Well the joke's on you! I will be there and I will be eating pie!!! :eat:

(I may have to get the waitress to take my photo for the run report. Or maybe I can just prop the camera on a napkin dispenser. I'll figure it out):lol2:

It's a tradition we have on the last rainy Saturday every February.
Pick on a newbie named Bill. Read your contract dude.

Seriously, I think that list was a last minute update for this mornings ride, and only the two bad boy Strom adventurers had the kahones to make it.
The weather folks had it all wrong too.
Keep in mind last month's pie run was a very wet event too. Those who made that one remember and passed this time. More to come and dry riding in our future. Chuck and Bill home safe is a good thing.

Well since I spent all day yesterday ( almost all day) playing poker, the wife says I have to do a little family time today. So I guess I will not make the re-run for Hico. But I've got to say, not a bad idea , spending time with the teenage boy before he doesn't want to spend any time at all... got to go

We made it to the Bluebonnet Cafe just as they closed. We managed to salvage the ride anyway. What a great day to be out.
