We passed a small cemetery on a bluff above 170 last week while on the Lost Trail Ride.

What peaked my interest is the fact that it does not show up on the GPS, which is usually pretty accurate.

It looks very (1800's) old and I am guessing it has not been used in a while.

Next time I am thorough there I need to stop in and check it out.

It's interesting how many abandoned cemeetaries there are. I've worked at the same station off and on in East Austin for 16 years, and 6 months ago the City cleaned up two of them within 1/4 of a mile from where I'm sitting right now. I always thought they were vacant lots because they just appeared to be overgrown eye-sores. Come to find out, some of the graves date back to the late 1800's.

My wife and I were out riding in North Texas last weekend. We stopped at the old cemetery in Celina. The oldest graves there dates back to the 1840's.

What suprised us is how many kids were buried there. It must have been tough growing up in the old west.

Funeral homes are a good source of information regarding old graveyards. There is probably some kind of statewide listing they have because I have asked local facilities for directions to get to burial sites when going to out of town funerals and they always seem to quickly come through with the correct info and easy-to-follow directions.

On a reacent thread regarding DS rides between famous-named cities (Paris to Decatur) I considered suggesting making some of the way points out of the way rural graveyards. Some of the ones I have seen would require a four wheel drive hearse during wet weather!
