I was supposed to ride the Sam Houston trails last weekend, but it was rained out. I ended up riding on the beach between Port Arthur and Galveston. I thought it would get kind of boring, but I ended up having a lot of fun.
I’m going back Friday to finish a section near Port Arthur that I was unable to complete, because I went in search of a 4x4 to help two vehicles that got stuck in the sand.

Hey that sounds like fun I have been wanting to do that some time, how long would it take to go from high island to port aurthur? Take some more pics, we need to get some riders together for a beach run in the future.

I have a free pass this weekend any day. Of course, I am still running with the stock tires. I think I am going to order some dot knobbies real soon, until then I cannot take this bike to the beach. I'll watch the board and the weather.

To get to the beach, I took I-10 from Beaumont to Winnie. Then it was Hwy 124 straight to the sand, and that’s where I pulled over to park. Along the beach from Hwy 124 to the tip of the peninsula near Galveston and back is 55 miles. I noticed the first “No ATV” sign about ten miles into the ride at the pass in Gilchrist. I considered for a minute if the police would consider my KLX an atv, then decided that I hadn’t come all this way for nothing. Not wanting to draw attention, I did pass other vehicles and people very slowly and gave them plenty of room.
I took a break back at the car before I headed the other way towards Port Arthur. This is the really fun section that I didn’t get to finish. There are no speed or atv restrictions, and since it’s less traveled there are obstacles. One of the fisherman I passed thought this stretch was about 17 miles. About 8 miles later I came across a car that was stuck in the sand. Nearby was the truck that attempted to pull him out, also stuck. Anyway, I rode back and found someone with a 4X4 that offered to pull them out.

I'm for a group ride on the beach. There are 3 of us in Baytown that could potentially meet up somewhere. 2-KLRs and one KTM. Keep the thread going and see who shows up. Sunday could be a good NASCAR day though. The Daytona 500 and a rainy day make for good napping.

Do any of you guys ever ride the Sam Houston trails or Outlaw Trax? I may be going as a guest to Outlaw next weekend. If not and weather permitting it’ll be Sam Houston instead.
I’m from New Orleans but have been working out of Beaumont since November. Every other week I go home to see the family, but the week I stay I try and ride. Unfortunately my KLR is back home so I can’t do any street. What I’m saying is that every other week starting next weekend, I am free to ride offroad and I would like to hook up with some other riders.
The wife is bringing the kids up here this weekend for a change. Since I’m off Friday, I’m going to ride the beach before they arrive tomorrow afternoon. If anyone can get away and wants to go, let me know by 4:00.
Later,
Chris

I will have to say that I may pass on the riding till next weekend. I don't think I feel like riding in rain with the temps in the upper 40's.

Bagwell,

Yeah, the family enduro got canceled due to weather this weekend. I personally am all for riding rain or shine, but some are not. Keep an eye on the website www.trh-cycle.org to see when it is rescheduled. I think there is another one next month scheduled for the 19th as well but check the site to make sure.
A family enduro is an enduro layed out for the family. Riders meeting is at 9am usually and key time which is the start for the first row of riders is at 10am. each minute a row of riders leaves the starting line. It is a timed event where you keep mileage and time and adjust mileage as needed along the way. You go thru checkpoints and get timed as you go thru. You want to time yourself so that you keep a pace as designated on the roll chart and signs along the way so that you come thru the check points in the middle of your minute. You wont know the exact location of check points along the way, but you can ride the possibles which is reading the rules and realizing where checkpoints can and cant be placed and what changes in the mileage and such allow for locating checkpoints where along the course. Speed averages change during an enduro and you use your time keeping equipment (stop watch or computer) and your mileage equipment (odometer or computer) to keep yourself on time. In a family enduro there is a 10 to 12 mile course in the morning that everyone rides. This course is a slower pace typically and somewhat easier course and takes about an hour typically. You then have an hour (if you are on time) for lunch (which is provided free with participation in the family enduro) and the second loop is a self start after lunch. The second loop or afternoon loop is typically 20 to 30 miles and a little faster pace.
The family enduros held in the national forest require a spark arrester and helmet as well as natl forest permit fees. If its held on private land just a helmet is required.
To participate in the family enduro you must be a member of TRH ($40 a year for the family) and its $15 or $20 for the first rider and like 5 dollars or so for each family member riding for each family enduro. The food is always great and homemade. Trophy presentation after the race.
Its a fun time.

Dang it, and I just spent the last hour figuring how to attach the magnetic tank bag to the gs. I might just take it out if it is dry early, I have an idea for a street sign pictorial (can I use that as a noun?) in a neighborhood not too far from my house. Whew! went out at 11:00 and am back writing up my little adventure. Hope you like it. (Hey what else do you have to do on a day like today?)

I made it back to the beach last Friday and rode the section between Hwy 124 and Port Arthur. It is a 20 mile stretch and I didn’t encounter anyone else after the first five. Well, until I was stopped by the ranger at the Sea Rim State Park. He told me that unregistered bikes aren’t allowed on the beach, but he was really cool about it and even asked me how the ride went. Since I knew I wasn’t riding any farther, I asked him how much farther the beach went. He pointed to a fence just barely visible in the distance and said that that is the end of the line for everybody.
That section of the beach is so isolated that I’ll take my chances riding unregistered again, but next time I’ll turn around before I get to the state park. There’s no sign, but it’s not very far past the buoy in the picture.

I find it amusing that you have to have a registered bike to ride on the beach
Did he say anything about a speed limit?

He didn't mention anything about speed limits. The only signs I've ever seen were 30 miles West of the state park. The limit was posted as 15mph, but that area actually has visitors.

Wait until you get a plastic gas tank, then it will be my turn....
This is one of the reasons I don't want to get the Clarke tank for the DRZ, my mini cortech magnetic tank bag is just perfect on the stock tank!

Might have to check with 10-95 about the speed limits, but they used to be 35 mph in unmarked areas. It is kinda funny about the registration thing, but the beaches fall under the rule of the highway dept. You are supposed to be fully street legal, registered, insured, and a liscensed operator. Goofy, but sadly true.
