It is that time of the year again. Between now and April 18th, there will be the annual increased number of bicycle riders on the roads around Houston. This is the time of year when fat guys like me don their spandex and try to get into good enough shape to ride to Austin. When I say ride, I mean pedal our bicycles.
After the MS 150, a large percentage of the riders abandon their cycling until the following year. When we get out on the roads and torture ourselves again.
The main reason I wanted to bring this up is the cyclist head out of town to the same roads the motorcyclist head out of town for. While riding between Frelsburg and Fayetteville a couple of weeks ago, there was a large group of cyclist out enjoying the beautiful day. These cyclist are the same crazy drivers you see in Houston everyday in their cars. They don't always signal their intentions to change lanes or swerve with reckless abandon.
So, for a few months, let's hope everyone is careful out there. And, what ever you do, don't plan a day trip out to the near west side roads on the weekend of April 17th and 18th. I probably couldn't handle the envy of wishing I was on one of my motorcycles, instead of a bicycle.
On the other side of that same coin, the money raised goes to a great cause and it is a heck of a party.
