Jesse, Do you understand that you put this thread in the dualsport forum? Do you have a DS bike? If yes, you may want to add it to your signature. Of course, I'm assuming your SV is street only. If you don't have a DS, you may want to post this again in the main upcoming rides section.
I may do some DS Sunday. But a street ride is out. My Duc is in a million pieces (doing valve adjustment).

LOL no wonder I couldn't find this thread the next day. I had to search for all posts made by myself to find this.

Hey Bryan, I finally got my Garmin 276c. I have a thing downtown at 11 am, so I can't meet today. Let me know if you want to meet sometime just to check it out. It's mounted on the bmw and I could meet you after work anytime next week at the Walmart or nearby, I get home from work at 4:30. If not, you can see it next time I can meet for a ride. We still need to order a data card for it so I can get the detailed maps loaded, it came with just base map of major roads.

Howdy DD,
:tab Galveston to Houston is about an hour straight up the freeway with light traffic. Then maybe another 30-40min to the North side of Houston where most of the DS riding can be had. There are some folks down in your neck of the woods though. They've been riding on some of the beaches.
:tab Where are you now?
Welcome to the site!

I am in Kodiak Alaska right now, im being stationed in Galveston this summer though. I am from the Alabama-Florida region. I am looking forward to getting down there because it looks like there are some great places to ride. I was referred to this site by someone on thumpertalk forums and was blown away by some of the pictures of TWT ride adventures.

Hey Donny my brother lives in Texas City (Maybe 20 mins. from Galv.) and rides a XR650L and I live just north of that. We both love DSing. About the only place to ride in Galv. is over on Pelican Island. There is a little area to ride offroad there. Then there's the beach from San Luis Pass to Freeport. There are a few places around TX City that my bro and his freinds ride. Then we also have a couple of areas near hear namely Pearland Park Way to ride. But definately going up north offers a lot more. The south side of Houston would only be about 30 minutes from Galv.
I assume you must be in the Coast Guard? Welcome to TX. I think I just got a brand new neighbor from the Coast Guard.
Just email me jimguillory@houston.rr.com or my brother jguillory5@houston.rr.com when you want to look around.

Hey Beemin, you're right here in League City? That's close to us also. Do you do any DSing? I see you've got the bikes to do plenty of it.

Hey all, I am new here.
What do you guys suggest for me to start with the begin off roading? I have had my bike for 2 months and am thinking i should use it a little off road for fun.
Also anyone know of any over night trips coming up that start from Houston?

Yes, this is the dualsport subdirectory. For the main (street) "upcoming rides" go up a couple of levels. See the path at the top of this page.
Houssic, where are you located? There are some good roads north and west of Houston that have not been paved yet. You should start by seeing how that GS handles with reduced traction. If you like it, then move into the dirt single track.

Houssic,
:tab Welcome to the site. Got a GPS? I have some tracks from my DS riding in the area around Huntsville and in the Sam Houston NF. No single track stuff thank you ;-) The GS was a bit heavy for that. I ride a KLR now, though I do miss the GS for the street stuff!!

No i don't have a GPS but that brings up my next question. I have some friends and they do have GPS and I was wondering which one to get. Of course the BMW ones are an option but i always think BMW is a little overpriced because they can be.
I wanted to get a GPS unit where i could punch in the coordinates in a row and then I could follow just the coordinates. Like if you have a circular route that you want to follow and there are 5 restaurants on the circle. I would like to punch in the coordinates of hte 5 restaurants in order and the route would be plugged in. Has anyone ever heard of that or is that new?

:tab GPS mapping has gotten better. You don't have to just enter a few waypoints. You can select the actual roads you want to take and some will even automatically figure out the route to a destination using your routing preferences for road types. So it is still a bit like connecting the dots, but with a little more features.
:tab The single biggest feature to me between the older models and the newer models is the use of a USB data transfer cable and/or the ability to use removeable memory cards that have readers which can be used with your PC. Transfering more than just a few maps over an old serial cable is SLOW and very annoying! Other than that it is just a question of how much memory and how big a screen you want
