View Full Version : Big Bend Feb. 26-29th 2004
My wife and I are thinking of making another trip to Big Bend National Park and surrounding area at the end of February. We'll be camping in the park, probably at the Chisos Basin campground.
There is great riding all around that area, over to Presidio and up to the Davis Mountains and Ft. Davis. The scenery is amazing and the weather is great that time of year (cold at nights, but up in the 70s and 80s during the day).
From Ft. Worth, it's about 500 miles to the park, so I'm not sure if we'll attempt this two-up, or look into perhaps trailering.
Anyone else interested?

Or you could go in March with this group (http://www.eurosportcycle.com/events/bbtrip.htm) of folks local to you... :-D
I really need to go down there, especially after SVInAustin (and others) talked about it.
Bah, hotels and lodges are for wussies! :b
And March is Spring Break time.

:tab If I had the bucks I'd go in a heartbeat :-( Gotta save the pennies for the other stuff though, like tires  I'd like to see an extensive report after the trip with lots of cool pictures ;-)

I don't think Big Bend is a big Spring Break Destination. I would go at that time!
Just found out that I have a wedding to go to the last weekend in Feb. Doh. So, it may turn out to be sometime in March afterall.

I did a 7 day trip to Big Bend and the Davis Mountains last year during spring break(second week in March). I made hotel reservations 2 months in advance and barely got in at Terlingua. You can always stay in Marfa or Alpine and have a great warmup(or freeze up) ride in each day. I don't know about the camping though. They don't take revervations and it is first come first serve. The Lodge is booked about 9-12 months in advance.
Great thing about Big Bend is that even at it's busy time, it's not crowded.
The roads aren't crowded and they are fantastic. :P

Are you not aware of the HSTA event "RideTheRio" Feb. 20-22?
Get info at www.ridetherio.com. I believe rooms (and camp sites) are still available at the "overflow" hotel...Big Bend Motor Inn in Terlingua.
The kick-off dinner is in Ft. Davis on Thursday night, the 19th. Most riders arrive on Thursday in order to have 2 full riding days.
Check it out! This is the 12th year and a good time is always to be had.

Hey Greg!!
:tab Good to see you come out and play! ;-) Are you going to the HSTA event? I had hoped to go but just can't swing it financially :-( I have been dying to get down there for several years and just can't seem to get the planets aligned properly  I really want to get all the way down to Copper Canyon, especially after seeing some really awesome ride reports from some folks that went recently.
:tab Any chance you and your wife might join us for some riding this Spring?
