I figure if anyone knows it's you folks. I'm looking for something to take camping, or play around here on base with. Street legal is desired so I can ride on the road if I have to. I just don't know which models to look at - old is fine, I'm trying to spend less than $1500.

Kawasaki KLR 250 or Super Sherpa. Not marketed anymore, but is highway capable (to 65 MPH), light enough to lift into the back of a truck, and will go just about anywhere you want to go, as well as some places one should not go.

I'd sell you my 200cc Diamo DP bike for 1200, or my TTR clone (not street legal). But, I gotta keep ONE of 'em for myself. Tell you the truth, I'd rather keep the Diamo because it's street legal and has a rack so I can easily haul feed to my feeder with it. But, the TTR clone is more fun to play on in the dirt. I need to get rid of one of 'em, though, just hard to decide which one.

Well.....lets see, I bought a 78 suzuki SP370 for the wife, it was manufactured as street legal, and I have the rear tailight and what not for it, but it's simply too much of a bike for her. I rode it and it's way wheelie happy for a beginner. I bought it for 400, put a new clutch and cable on it. And it runs pretty well. It would need turn signals, and plates to be legal, has lots of "little issues" to work on, but it stops, go's, and is dirt cheap. I would be happy to just get my 400 bucks back, it's just a little too tall for her, and it scares the crap out of her. Clyer manual included in sale or trade. It just sits in the garage....tires ok, chain and sprocket worn, but not too bad. I figure if you have fun with it 5 or 6 times, you got your money's worth out of it. The VIN is clean, but I have no title. It has been so long since it was titled that it dosent even show up in the database when run.....early twin shock enduro here's a link to what it looked like when new.......http://www.bikez.com/bike/index.php?bike=14708
of course it looks like a rat bike now, all black.....anyway it's here if you want it...

Here is a link to a sherpa. I checked out the bike and with very little work it would be in great shape.

Getting to buy new uniforms, and time/distance restrictions say I can't afford another bike as much as I thought I could. That said, someone should definitely take that SP370 off Jason's hands. Too bad I can't. bleh.

No problem Mack, I totally understand your situation, can't have you running around on the base naked, you will have to change your handle to section 8.....Chris, (Old BMW) was officially next in line, then I have another contestant in the wings, and a brother in law, who I would rather not sell it to....come to think of it he still owes me $100 bucks from last summer.....dangit! So CHRIS...PM me again if you wanna come and get it. Pics coming soon, not much to look at though! But hey it runs!

If you do get it, can my wife take a ride on it? I will even work on it for free.
Also, I work in Sherman live in Plano, if you wouldn't mind a noob tagging along on some dirt road rides, I would like to build up some non asphalt skills.

Uhh....
It's NOT a good learner bike, as a matter of fact my KLR is easier to ride, this thing is a beast, loft the front wheel on demand, somtimes when you don't want to, crank on it coming out of a corner, and you are on one wheel. Plus it's kick start only, and my wife can pick the bike up from it's side, but can't turn it over, she just dosen't weigh enough to overcome the compression. It's a beast. I bought it as a learner for her, and it's just too much. Injury was inevitable if we kept it. So it's outta here.

I casually mentioned that I had a line on a really goo deal on a beater bike over dinner. Heather casually replied that I had a fixer up in the shop now that I'm not working on and I've got charfging problems with my daily rider that I've not had time to look at. Sooo I guess I need to pass this on to the next lucky person.
If you still have it in a few months I may be able to sneak it into the shop without her noticing. we'll just have to see.

Let's go buddy! Do you ride a blue bike? Where do you work? I saw someone on a DR I think the other day heading to the Tyson area, but I was in kind of a hurry so I couldn't chase them down.

Fallendown, thanks for the PM, I am going to rehash for everyone else. My wife has about 25k street miles, but almost no offroad miles. I am near the same but hope to change that. As for kick starting it, she will not like that part, but we shall see.
Oldbmw,
If you would like, I will hold the bike for you and you can buy it back in about a year ;-) The CB650 in the garage is completely sand blasted and ready to go back together. I just need to figure out how to get keys for it.
I work at the Sherman TI plant. I usually drive a van pool to work since it only costs me $20 a month. But, if I do drive it is on the VFR. I have ordered a louder horn and a master cly kit for the MZ. Once that is in I will on that too. Give me 2 weeks to get the parts in and the bike ready. Maybe I can cut out of work early, or go in late and we can play. That or weekends are also free.

Well, if you get into a better position to pick up a spare bike, definitely try to get a look at a Sherpa. Heck, if you end up near Dallas, let me know & I'll hook you up with a test ride. One nice thing about them is that they're still sold in Canada and Asia, so parts are easy to come by. For freeway work, I definitely prefer my DR, but under 70mph the Sherpa is just too much fun to be legal, and even on these 50/50 Cheng Shins the bike is light enough that I haven't had any traction problems on pavement.
Adam, if you and Chris line up a dirt ride, let me know. I've got some Kings 966's going on the DR tomorrow and need to test them out.

Mike green and I are going out this weekend if you would like to come out and play. I put some of the cheap Cheng Shins on my bike, we will see if I can balme it on the tires or if I will actually make it.

If I can get some brake pads on the back of my bike, Mike Green and I are going to go play this weekend. You are more than welcome to come. We might go to marshal creek so he can teach me some basics. Other than that we are just looking for dirt roads.
