Howdy,
Here is a cool interview with the kid. He's got a good perspective on things. Nice to see someone that is not totally full of themselves for a change ;-)

Hailing from Lexington, I gotta root for the KY boy. :)
He's probably the only guy among the top 10 that can CLOG...
From the article, it looks like he got the message that it's "every man for himself..."

A few years ago I got to ride on the same as track as Nicky. As a matter of fact race right next to him on a xr-200 while he was on a xr-100. He is so talented that even goofing off he is so extremely fast. Wish I could have taken pictures or videos of him but it wasn't allowed. I wil have those memories for ever. That same weekend I rode with the late Will Davis, Kenny Tolbert (Chris Carr's mechanic) and the very young Ben Spies! Kenny kicked me over in the straight away. How cool huh?
I wish Nicky well and hope he has a great career in Moto GP.

Adios,
Tourmeister,
Nice post. I really appreciate the riders out there that amaze on the track, but are humble off it. I had the fortunate pleasure of meeting a few of the Haydens (including dad Earl) in 1999. Roger Lee was doing a flat track race here at Lone Star Park (DFW area). They were all nice, patient, posed for a few photos, and I even got their signatures on my first racing leathers (jacket). Earl Hayden (original number 69) but his "Hancock" the largest per my request.
Unfortunately, that was also the race that claimed the life of Toby Jorgenson (friend of Chris Carr). I met with his family also over the weeks that followed during his fight at Parkland Hospital. As much as I love motorcycles and racing, most do not understand the extreme limits racers (sponsored/private/etc) go through to do what most of us would love to do once.
I will always consider the Hayden family one of my favorites when it comes to racing. Not only for their talent, but their generousity off the track. They are not the only ones out there. Though I have not personally met Duhamel, I have heard he is also an amazing person.
Go Nicky Hayden MOTO GP!!!

I was also there at the race sitting in Chris Carr's pit. Nicky actually raced in that race where Toby lost his life. The spray from the tires was unbelievable. We were told that the track was being chewed up very badly. It was also the last time they raced there. Toby lost his sight and had an unfortunate fatal accident. Very young, under 20 if I remember right. He was kept in a coma while fighting for his life. Extremely sad.
One thing about Nicky was that he was very approachable. Great guy and what talent this whole family has.

Yes, the track at Lone Star was horrible for Flat Tracking. I mentioned the sand coming off the back wheel resembled the rooster tail caused by high powered speed boats on the lake. Toby was 17 years old. I have a photo of him moments before the race. The sun was setting and it was very sad to see the photo after it was developed. After meeting his family/friends at Parkland Hospital, I opened up channels at the Dallas Morning News to interview his family regarding the injuries and the real reason the race was stopped early (I was on the track listening to the racers/promoters/etc). I also donated and tried to raise as much money as possible.
I really respect those who go out there and race (in any condition), because that is what they want to do.
