To Quote TM from the A-B-C game thread when questioned about this threads idea, "So Start One". Well Here it is.
Rules. Simple...
1. FM & RM Roads ONLY (we can do park roads, county roads, any other road or highway in their own thread).
2. In sequential ASCENDING order. FM 1, FM 2, FM 3, ect...
3. Safely have your bike in the photo (all or part of the bike, I am not picky),
4. Bike needs to be on the actual FM/RM road for the photo to count.
5. A photo can only be used once. (if by chance two or more road signs are present).
Let the game Begin!
Helpful Reading.

My TxDOT friend also provided this link to accompany the spreadsheet I'll try to get hosted.
Select the type of road "FM-Farm to Market Road" and then the 4 digit number (xxx8, or 1431 etc.)and it returns a very detailed description file of that road.

Just from a pessimistic standpoint... do we know for sure that they all (still) exist in sequential order without gaps?

According to THIS (http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-texas-highways) there are in excess of 3000 FM roads in TX and it also seems to indicate that some of them have been "retired", but I still haven't been able to find a complete list.

This might take a while then... But I do know where FM-2, is and unless someone beats me to it, it will be posted tomorrow!
For those of you that have MS Streets & Trips, you can search locations of FM roads pretty easily. Can't believe I am going to give up my secret.. oh well the more that can find the roads the more fun right?
OK... Click Find.
in the street address field type. FM-2
In the state field, select TX
then hit Enter.
From what I have found on this very basic searching is that the MS-S&T does not have FM-7 or FM-11. But were good to there and its a start right?
Have fun!

There was a push to rename them all to "urban" but that went over like the proverbial lead balloon.
Trivia... There are Farm To Market roads, Ranch To Market roads, but there is only ONE "Ranch" road. Where does it lead?

Fun game!
Unfortuantely, I think it would take more than one lifetime to photo your bike at all the signs.
It would be an interesting endeavor to design an IBA route that touched tire to the largest number of FM and RR roads in a 48 hour period.

Thanks Pacman. May I ask what search criteria/engine you used to find that?
I used Google and typed in "texas farm roads". It was the first result.
Incidentally, I can't get Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/) to search state-wide for FM's. I've tried every combination of the road names that I can think of, and it just won't do it. You have to put a city or zip in the search field. I love Google Maps, and so far this is the only major dissapointment I've had with it. Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/) let me down in this respect, as well. Speaking of Google Earth, this program just rocks. I've been using the free version for about a year now, and I just love. I can waste hours just messing around with it. I'll probably buy the full version when I get a GPS. You need 3D graphics, so check out the video requirements before you download.

A search in Google Maps for RR-1, Hye, TX 78635 produced this map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=RR-1,+Hye,+TX+78635&ll=30.242811,-98.586287&spn=0.01787,0.054245&om=1). It's interesting that the map image itself does not refer to the road as RR-1, only as Klein-Buebsahm Rd., but Google finds it on the map anyway when the search for RR-1 is run.

I forgot to mention that FM5 is a fun little road - maybe 12 miles in length total, but lots of curves and a decent road surface. There was very little traffic on a Sunday afternoon. I would classify it as a rural-residential road - not very many access points, either.
I think this one is a sleeper...

I got to FM5 by taking FM1187 west from US377 (I made a trip to Cycle Gear west first) - it connects just as you get to Aledo, west of Ft. Worth. FM5 then goes south and west and then north into Annetta, ending at I20.
Really not too far away, not even to Weatherford...
1187 west of 377 is not bad, much better than the stretch on the east side of 377...

There's a good chance I could make a run down and pick up FM8. Taking a bike ride Wednesday night and was thinking of heading down that way.
now a way to devise riding FM51 to get to FM8... :ponder: oh yeah, and avoid as much of 67 as possible!!
Does a picture with any 2 wheel bike work or does it have to have a motor. I am on one of them every week on a bicycle and a motorcycle. I can cover 68, 75, 100, 151, 271, 272, 273, 274, 409, and 455 when we get to them. Several of these would be easy to get with a group on the planned Fannin County Dual Sport ride.

Ride got canceled tonight. Going to try again for Saturday afternoon.
Hop, not like I have the final say, but if you ride a pedal bike, I'd be happy with that for a sign. that takes more work!

Its not that much work and any road I spend time on pedaling I also ride the other bikes on. Its just easier to stop and take pictures on the pedal bike and I am on FM 271 every week.
I have been looking at my Fannin County map and I think I could plan a fun little ride to hit every Farm Road in the County in one day. They are mostly higher number roads but it would be fun.

just was looking for FM7, and found out that FM-7 and RM-7 are actually the same roads..
source -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farm_to_Market_Road
"FM and RM roads are numbered as a single set of roads (e.g., there should not be an FM and an RM with the same number, unless it crosses US 281.)"
so do we have a RM- 7 (Ranch To Market Road) ??
PS: "Roads occurring west of U.S. Route 281 (or Interstate 35 in some locations) are designated Ranch-to-Market "
let the hunt begin !!! MUAHAHA seriously not listed , I found PR and RR 7 as well as Sh-7 but no FM or RM 7 in texas.. must be a defunct road now part of the desert of east texas.

Since there isn't an FM7, can we sub in TX7 to avoid a gap?
(Assuming substitutions will NOT apply unless the FM simply doesn't going forward)

To Quote TM from the A-B-C game thread when questioned about this threads idea, "So Start One". Well Here it is.
Rules. Simple...
1. FM Roads ONLY (we can do ranch roads, park roads, county roads, any other road or highway in thier own thread).
2. In sequential ASCENDING order. FM 1, FM 2, FM 3, ect...
3. Safely have your bike in the photo (all or part of the bike, I am not picky),
Let the game Begin!
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5755/2299/1600/DSCN0133.1.jpg

M38A1
08-04-2008, 05:19 PM
OK, here's yet another suggestion for management of this effort......
DixonDuke should most probably post the target list on the FIRST POST/FIRST PAGE of ALL the ones we are after much like I did for the group Everywhere project. As the signs/bikes are photographed and posted IN ORDER, Duke would edit the first post by placing the persons name who FIRST POSTED the next picture. That way, the list stays current, everyone knows what road is next and you can plan on where you'll post yours.
For grins, Duke should then take a copy of the picture, name the file numerically and stick them in a folder somewhere in the deep recesses of his hard-drive. When they are all done, burn a CD and give it to Chuck telling him he's got another video edit project to do. :eek2:
This is a large undertaking to manage because there are so many, but I think it's possible with some 'administration' if Duke is willing. The key is posting the targets and staying on top of them as they are posted.
Thoughts?

Hmmmm.... Let me think on that for bit. Right now I am inclined to say lets try to keep going in sequential order. FM3 & FM6 were already posted, but now have disappeared from the thread. Hopefully either the original poster(s) will shoot them to me and I will get them back in the order of things. Or if someone else has those two, get them to me and I will do the same.
But as things go, we are waiting on FM10 to be posted.

Absolutely, take the pictures as you come across the FM Roads now, then wait until it is "that" roads turn to be posted.
I know that I have about 18 more to post up that I took Saturday returning from the RTE.
And in the spirit of "Who's Line Is It Anyway"...
1,000,000 Points to the one that posts the most.
500,000 Points for second place
250,000 Points for third.
500,000 Points for those that post a reply with the next road in less than 0 - 20 Min.
250,000 Points for those that post a reply with the next road in 21 Min - 24 Hours.;-) :lol2:
OK... Not really on the points thing, just having a little fun.
With over 8000 members and less than 4000 roads, this shouldn't take THAT long to do.

Great Going Everyone. I have updated the original post. Lets keep this going in Sequential Order please. I see that 26 is already posted up, but we are only now up to 21. As this game gains momentum I don't want to make the mistake of missing someones hard work and by posting early I can pretty much guarantee that I will miss the ones that are posted out of order.
Rules. Simple...

There is a list (http://http://www.geocities.com/dstanek.geo/txhwys/fm-rm-ur.html)in post #9 by Mr. Pacman that gives the start and end points of all the valid FM roads.
24 is down near CC - I found it using Garmin's Mapsource. I may try to post my waypoint file I've been working on - it has the start and end points for FM 1-50 from that list...

I think the information for the Geosities site was probably gleaned from TxDOT. There's another link on the first page of the thread that takes you to the TxDOT site that allows you to search by route number, and then provides the same info that the GeoCities site down, plus a little history of the route and how it's changes over the years. Pretty nifty.

from TxDOT search (http://www.dot.state.tx.us/tpp/search/query1.idq?Route=FM&number=25&CiScope=%2Ftpp%2Fhwy&CiMaxRecordsPerPage=10&TemplateName=query1&CiSort=FileName+%5Ba%5D&QueryText=FM+near+%2225%22&HTMLQueryForm=query.htm):
Not sure how to interpret it though. I am assuming that "Cancelled" means it is no longer active.
Update: there is no "Certified Mileage" for this one, indicating that it is not valid.
"In Seguin from IH 10 northwestward via New Braunfels to US 87 in Boerne; and then from another point on US 87 in Boerne southwestward to SH 16, approximately 9.0 miles east of Bandera, a total distance of approximately 67.0 miles. (show concurrent with SL 337) (Guadalupe, Comal, Kendall, and Bandera Counties) New description; section of approx. 0.30 mile of SS 351 from IH 10 northward to FM 78, and section of approx. 9.9 miles of FM 25, from FM 78 northwestward to IH 35 in New Braunfels, and section of approx. 30.8 miles of RM 475 from US 281 westward via Boerne to SH 16 transferred to SH 46."
It looks like the FM 25 designation was changed to highway 46 from New Braunfels to Seguin.

So who's out in Lubbock? More importantly, who in Lubbock could be persuaded to ride out 30 miles or so to get 28? Also, 34 is just off I-10 about 60 miles southeast of El Paso. Is anybody traveling that way? (It may be a little far to convince somebody in El Paso, who is probably not as psycho about this game as we are, to drive that distance)

Here it is. 1507 miles
OK, this is embarrassing but I finally figured out what Janet was saying when she called on Tuesday night.
Her first statement was "I got it".
I replied: "Got what?"
Her answer: "24"
Well, I was in my own software-development-induced world and thought she meant the last 24 courthouses that she went on her 2-day trip for. I forgot that she only needed 14!
She said I could post up on the thread that she got it & I still didn't make the connection. Her picture, though, cleared all this up.
It's the pits getting old...
Oh yeah, Janet was able to finish her courthouse quest and pick up an obscure FM road this week!

I have been following this thread for some time now. I really like ETR (excuse to ride) ideas. I hope to participate when I can. I am enjoying your post and pics. Would be cool if more TWTexans joined in.
Good idea and it's cool to watch you do this.

Went out for a DS ride to Dell City today with a friend from Midland. I was planing of swing by and getting FM34 but as it was 225 miles on a stock DR650 seat was enough for me. :moon:  I will be going I the morning to get FM28 unless someone post a pic between now and the morning. If so, I'll head in the other direction and get FM34.:rider:

Good Job, y'all. Janet, thanks for making a short ride to collect FM24. Trekr, I finally get to add your FM26 to the tally, & bmcdonau thanks for catching FM27.
I have updated the original post and archived the pictures.
And as a reminder:
Rules. Simple...

All right, that settles it. I'm naming my first born child FJRBandit. :thumb:
I'm sure that "David" would work just fine... :sun:
It's handy that David (FJR Bandit) is temporarily located in Carlsbad, N.M. so he can handle all of these TWT "emergencies". :zen:
