Can anybody get away Monday for a quick run to Clayton?

I'm thinking of leaving here about 7:00 am. That would put me in Clayton about 9:00 ready to ride. Ride fast and hard till 4 or 5 then go home.

Anybody up for it?

Not sure, I have some GPS tracks from past rides. From what I hear you know the area pretty well. Did you say something about caves? :trust:

I like to think I ride fast, but I'm sure it's not as fast as I think I ride. I wouldn't worry much about skill level as long as whoever has the better skills agrees to wait on the other when needed. I can take it easy if I need to and would be happy to cause I really don't want to get to far out there by myself.

I dont know it as well as I used to but it will all come back. I have been busy spending most on my time building Green Acres the off-road 4 wheel drive park. Anyway the mountain you can see from town to the NW of Clayton known as Flag Pole hill has some caves. they are tall thin slices about 10-50 feet long. I can refresh my memory along with mushroom rock that is up on top. we can run this all the way parelleling rte 2 to krum creek trail if it is still open. I have ran it from krum creek to flaqg pole a few times. theres a gate up at willys parents house but I think I can get a key if we want to go explore......

I work tommorrow so I will try to trade the day off. Riding at the slower riders apce is excellent !!
I road hot in heavy back in 97(racing cross country). I am bouncing back into it right now. My mind is a lot faster than my body LOL. Saturday I am hitting Marshall Creek with a friend who has never ridden off road. I have been making short jaunts around the house. I found some old abandoned railroads tracks. most of it has the railroad ties still there so i have been beating myself up in 2nd gear till I get tired then hit 3rd and hit the tops.....

how is traffic northbound in the mornings do you know ??? I am at hwy 75, mockingbrid and lovers in the city

you want me to PM you a cell number for me...???

Later is always better for me :) But I will be there when needed. If theres another driver I can always take a quick nap... LOL

It takes me 45 minutes to get from Legacy to the very southern part of the Sherman city limits. I would give yourself 1.5 hours to get there and have enough room to stop off in Van Alstyne to grab a bite to eat.

I am trying to work it out so I can come as well. But I think i am going to be very sore on Sunday.

It doesn't really have to be so early. I was going to ride up there but the new to me bike is not a street legal as I thought So if somebody has a spot for me that would be great. If we can get all the bikes together we can leave a truck at my house and all ride up together.

Depending on Wife approval. :-?
I will be comming from Whitewright, its about 19 miles se from Sherman.
I ride from Whitewright to 635 and the NDT (54 miles) M-F its takes about 45 min on the best of days at 6 am @ 70 mph. I would think it would take a hr to get to Sherman.

Yes back by 6:30, 7ish would be awesome, like you I wake the rooster when I leave for work.

I can feel a cold comming on, or stomach flu not sure which. :lol2:

What do you ride Mcleod?

I saw someone on a KLR the other day that went north on 75 from 1417. I was on the highway on a KLR and waved.

The paved road scares the day lights out of me !!! Also my ATK wouldnt like that much pavement I dont think. I will be driving my Tundra up. If first man doesnt go I will have an open spot in the truck. I think 3 would fit real tight if needed. The problem is the extended cab would be tight for me while one of you drove but we can do it if needed !!! Plus this way we have atleast one chase vehicle.
Chris and I talked about heading toward picket and turning around when we got half way there on his GPS. Then go back to Clayton and run Krum and see if I can find the caves and show you guys the fire tower and go up in it on Willys parents property..... Then head home. If someone needs to head earlier they can also......
on another note do you guys head up 75 to atoka/stringtown then take 43 across to Daisey and then Clayton. This is not as senic but much faster then going through Durant the coming in by the state park or hwy 2 by the rodeo grounds.......
I want to park in Daisey sometime and head in the back way over the mountains ????
So what time ?? and where 7,730,8 Tractor Supply Center parking lot ??

Well Mike, billyji, can take my small trailer and F150. With that and the bed 4-6 bikes should fit. I just need to get all the crap off of it and grease the bearings. The F150 will have more room for passengers, the only catch is that the passenger door does not open from the inside.

Mike, I like the idea of stopping in Daisy. We have to put that on the list of areas to travel.

Ok, Mcleod I know who you are now. We've talked through e-mail before.

Going through Stringtown is the fastest way for sure I went home the other way once and it's an easy 30 extra minutes.

Why not do Daisy this time? The GPS thing is questionable right now. If I don't mage to get all of the wiring done on the DR it may not stay on due to vibrations. It likes to be powered of the bike when there are lots of vibrations.

Hey Steve,

wish I could go on some of these extravegant trips with you. Maybe nexttime.

The new bike is a nearly street legal 91 DR350 with a 435 kit in it. All I need is to get the horn and hi/lo beam hooked up and I can get it inspected. It's already got a tag and a street title so the biggest part is done.

Traded it even for my 50,000 mile 93 KLR yesterday. Now I just have to figure out the right cold starting sequence and we'll be goood to go. I may even try out some of these enduros I hear everybody talking about.

This is the bike

'91 DR350 Dirt Model - Bike runs well and will climb anything. Currrently setup 95% dirt / 5% street. Ridden to work a few times (15miles each way).
Here's the info:

Here's the "good":
- Texas Street-Legal title and registration
- 435 Thumper big-bore kit
- Mikuni racing carb w/ extra pilot jets
- K&N Filter (not currently installed)
- bark-buster hand guards
- dual-filament tail-light
- Functional brake-light switch for front brake only
- New Pirelli front MT-21 DOT dirt tire (95% dirt, 5% street)
- almost new Pirelli rear MT-21 DOT dirt tire (95% dirt, 5% street)
- enduro foot pegs & kick-stand
- Scotts aluminum swing-arm
- almost new Regina chain
- progressive fork springs
- stock plastic fuel tank
- heavy-duty tubes front & rear
- loud cobra pipe; has a spark arestor
- super-heavy duty skid-plate
- mirror
- pro taper bars / triple clamp
- solid disc
- stainless brake pins
- braded brake line
- h.d. clutch springs

Here's the "bad":
- difficult to start when cold, takes 6-7 kicks to get it to start. (this may just be my technique... or lack thereof).. once started, it will re-start on 1 kick
- petcock leaks a little fuel in the "On" or "Off" position, works great in "Res"
- front disc is a little warped - have replacement - not yet installed
- no speedo, trip clicker only
- no battery, kick only
- the grips are different colors

Extras:
- gearing (13f; 48r; 44r)
- chain
- oil-filters
- dual-filament headlight and housing brackets
- controls for turn-signals
- stock springs

$1500 OBO

Ok Tractor Supply on the NE corner of 82 and 75, by Staples.

Maybe we need to wait to see if my GPS will stay on and I can route a course from Daisy to Clayton. Speakin of that I would almost bet you could go from Stringtown to Clayton.

Chris, who needs to bring a sign that says "will drive for a trailer spot."

OK got the kitchen pass (I love that woman sometimes). I can either ride my xr or bring our explorer with a 5'x8' trailer. The trailer can hold two bikes easy I don't know about 3. The explorer can hold 4 adults fine 5 is a little tight.

7:30 or 8:30 at the tractor supply?

Do I need to bring a camera?

btw guys did you notice how bad my cough is?? (Wink wink nudge nudge say no more)

I got nothing around here that I can do in one day that will compare. My picture in my avatar came from me doing one of the water crossings up there in Clayton (photo by OLDBMW). Make sure ya'll get some pic's and video, I want to see a trip report when ya'll get back. Chris you may want to try and get a shot of the bathroom of that flinstone rock restaurant next to the shell station. You have to be 5 ft. tall to use it as it is up on a platform and there is no clearance between the ceiling and your head.

Do you all mind splitting Diesle 4 ways?

Lets try and meet around 7:30. Mike Green has your number and mine so he can keep us all informed.

I am glad you guys have cameras. My girlfriend took mine to Italy last night !!

Tery I would bring a camel back if you have one...

Chris you are right I bet we could run from Reba Mcentire,s hometown(Stringtown) all the way to Clayton. Actually I bet we could pick it up just east of Atoka. That can be the following Mondays, trip :) LOL

dbdolan... Bring it on !!! Like Adam said come up tonight.

Ahh the Corner Resturaunt(who knows what it is called now) I have had 2 interesting experiences over the years I have been 4 wheelin up there. The 1st one was a morning when we walked up and an entire high school class was walking around the resturaunt taking notes to write a paper. the 2nd was sitting there and seeing the Elk hurd across the street eating grass next to the Dollar General. I was truly amazed at how large Elk are. Then to be sitting in Clayton Oklahoma seeing them was unbelievable...

Ok guys you have my phone. 830 at the TSC. Call me if anything changes and I will do the same..... This is going to be a lot of fun !!! Anyone else in ???:rider:

I'll have my camelback and I usually packa little beef jerky and one of those foil packs of tuna for a just in case kind of deal.

I'm going to try and get out and piddle around on some local trails today. If I don't this tri[p will be the maiden voyage for me and this bike.:-P

Good idea on the tuna. I ate a lot that, this time last year. Life is full of good memories.
I am working till 1400 then getting things together. My cloths were pretty dirty after yesterdays mud riding.

1400!!! Now I understand the nap comment.

I have the battery on the bike and the H4 headlight in. But I'm just using bike power to run the light right now. I'm gonna do it right the first time and make a loom for all of the electrics so I didn't want to piece it together just to have to do it over again.

The GPS is running off internal batteries right now. I may try to wire it to the new 1.3ah battery today.

As far as headlight etc. I dont think we will see an officer until we hit Clayton....

:tab Hopefully the water levels will have gone down for you guys. Those deep crossings can get hairy. I'd think through what you need to do to refire a bike after a dunking! Change spark plug, crank/kick the engine without the plug to empty out any water in the cylinder, drain the airbox, dry the air filter, drain carb float bowl, stand bike on rear tire to drain exhaust system, CARRY A FEW CANS OF STARTER SPRAY! If you get that all down, it should save you a LOT of time! We spent a lot of time getting flooded bikes refired. I sure wish I could go but I've used up my time off ;-) Have fun!
