Well, after a year, I finally broke down and put some heated grips on the VFR. I had the Triumph factory grips on the Sprint and really liked them and found that I used them much more than I anticipated I would.
This time, though, I bought a set of Dual-Star elements. They're flat resistor elements that you put underneath your stock grips. They only cost $30 (plus I spent another $30 at Pep Boyz buying a relay, fuseblock and some electrical parts to put all my accessories on a switched connection to the battery that is only on when the key is on).
This morning it was around 30F as I left the house for the 25 mile ride to work. Verdict: the grips work. Even through my heavy gloves, I could feel the heat. I won't say my hands were toasty, because they weren't, but they didn't get cold.
The only problem. My freakin thumbs were freezing! I don't remember having this problem with the Triumph, but the tips of them stick out in the breeze and were popsicles by the time I got to work.
Coming home after dark it was even colder.
I think I may have to take the cage tomorrow. I used to think I was hardcore, too.
