Any Long Sweeping Tunnels?

I've always wanted to ride through one of those long Tunnels like you see in the movies, I went through one in Carralton I believe, but it was only like 1/4 mile, does anybody know of any here in the Dallas area?

Re: Any Long Sweeping Tunnels?

Your going to have to go over the pond to get the long one
In North America, Alaska is where you got to go.

But drive down to Houston and hit the Washburn Tunnel

I think there is a tunnel under the Addison airport. But don't take my word for it ... I try to never go farther east than DFW!

Or the Ogarrio Tunnel leading to Real de Catorce in Mexico. Featured in the movie The Mexican with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts.

The tunnel is like Whittier with only 1-way traffic, but it's at about 8,500 ft. elevation and at the end of a 17-mile cobblestone road.

It does have a bend in the middle of it. It wasn't originally planned as a tunnel, but was originally two mineshafts that intersected in the middle of the mountain. It's located between Saltillo and San Luis Potosi, near Matehuala.

Re: Any Long Sweeping Tunnels?

I went through one in WV that was about 1 mile long. It was pretty spooky when I couldn't see light in front or behind.

It was somewhere around Charleston but don't recall where it was.

Go up to Eureka Springs, AR. There's a nice tunnel right outside Rogers going up. Nice sounds effects.

Re: Any Long Sweeping Tunnels?

We have some up here in Colorado, the Eisenhower and Johnson Tunnels on I-70 going under the Continental Divide are probably the most well known and definitely most traveled in Colorado.

Re: Any Long Sweeping Tunnels?

The last tunnel of any consequence I can remember around here was the on Hwy 183 by the airport - and they tore that one down over 20 years ago.

As best I know, you've got to drive a bit to get to a real tunnel. Some that come to mind:
- US 84 from Cloudcroft to Alamogordo, nice tunnel on a great mountain road.
- Eisenhauer Tunnel on I-70, west of Denver. Two long tunnels at one of the highest paved spots in the US.
- Great Smoky Mtns Nat Park - At one point, the scenic road over the mountains actually loops back over itself, creating an interesting tunnel.

Re: Any Long Sweeping Tunnels?

only ones in Texas that I remember:

Dallas - Keller Springs road under the Addison Airport runway (toll).

Houston - Washburn Tunnel to Baytown

I remember another tunnel to Baytown from ages ago but I think it was replaced by a bridge.

I thought that was the Washburn tunnel...south of Baytown on 146.

I grew up in Baytown (as a young 'un) I can remember trying to hold my breath all the way through to the other end.

Yup, totally forgot about that one.

I-10 in Mobile Al is another one.

The one in Arkansas surprised me as I arrived in the middle of the night and you are riding through the inky blackness of the country there and then bam, here's this well lit tunnel!

Now it IS short and straight. The 2 I mentioned were quite a bit longer.

There was another tunnel in downtown Dallas that is now gone - the Good-Latimer Expressway tunnel under (I think) some RR tracks.
