2012 July 4 pics...

Let's start off with a little primer that popped up in the news today providing some tricks for shooting fireworks.

I hope everyone has a safe holiday. Not sure I'll get out to shoot anything, but post what 'cha got!

I think I may have come away with 1 keeper from last night at the Freedom over Texas show. I only had to risk life and limb to get it. I'll post it up once I actually get it on my computer.

Side note: I'm really getting frustrated not having a Tokina 11-16mm or a full frame camera. But, I'm going to have to deal with the D3100 as is until at least next year.

Had fun. The show was not as long as previous years, yet there was a very large turnout which was nice.

A brief 60 sec long video...

Re: 2012 July 4 pics...

I borrowed dad's Yamaha Zuma 50 and tried to find a good spot. I went down along White Oak and parked, walked down to the bayou and realized the view wasn't that great for shooting. I walked back and jumped back on the scooter. People were everywhere. I made my way closer in and ended up in a Theater District parking lot at Houston Ave. and Memorial Parkway. As I was trying to find a spot, the show started.

I pulled the Zuma onto the sidewalk and parked it there. Memorial Parkway was all blocked off and in the middle of it was a line up of HPD on horses. I thought that would make for a cool picture, so I walked up behind them and set my tripod up. At first I thought I lost the part of the tripod that attaches to the camera. It was on the ground about 3 foot from me. Whew! I got it all together and started snapping. I put my camera at 100 ISO, f/13, and put the shutter speed on Bulb. All of my pictures were taken between 3 and 11 seconds. I was just experimenting.

I creeped closer and closer behind the cops/horses. I did get a weird look from them every once in a while.

Here's my favorite of the night.

After taking these, I backtracked up Memorial and tried to get onto higher ground. As soon as I set my tripod down, the show was over. From my first pic to my last was an 8 minute span. It felt like 2 minutes and I didn't even get a picture of just the fireworks. I put my gear away as quick as I could and ran back to the scooter. I took off and didn't get far before it was gridlock traffic. As I was stopped, a group of 6-8 sportbike guys came lane splitting through. I became their final member. I followed those guys for about 4 miles... in between cars, down sidewalks, and through construction zones. I figured if they could do it, so could I. I felt like I was in a video game. After dropping the scooter back off, I ended up getting home about 10:30. If I was a law abiding citizen I would have still be on Houston Avenue at that time. I want a scooter now.

Being a cop myself those pics almost brought a tear. Fantastic! I do like the last one too as the explosion happened just above their heads but I do prefer seeing all the horses from further away. Very good pics, if I do say so myself.

Lies are fragile. They require constant attentiveness to keep them alive. The exposure of a single truth can rip through an ocean of lies, evaporating it instantly. - Brandon Smith

If you want government to intervene domestically, you’re a liberal. If you want government to intervene overseas, you’re a conservative. If you want government to intervene everywhere, you’re a moderate. If you don’t want government to intervene anywhere, you’re an extremist. — Joe Sobran

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance. – Murray N. Rothbard

When one possessed of the Truth suffers from a heavy heart he is susceptible to a more dangerous affliction — the craving for power to eradicate error, to cause Truth to triumph by force. - Frank Chodorov

Where politicians flourish, long history has harshly taught us, people and their liberty wither. Where the state is god and the "public interest" worshipped, individual man will be found bleeding upon the altar. - Karl Hess

The accepted wisdom is that without the state, society would collapse into lawlessness and crime. In fact, lawlessness and crime define the very nature of the state and the society organized by it. - Bionic Mosquito

But the myth of the rule of law does more than render the people submissive to state authority; it also turns them into the state's accomplices in the exercise of its power. For people who would ordinarily consider it a great evil to deprive individuals of their rights or oppress politically powerless minority groups will respond with patriotic fervor when these same actions are described as upholding the rule of law. - John Hasnas

Re: 2012 July 4 pics...

Thank you!

I do regret not asking one of the officers if they would like me to send them a picture or two.

I'm getting addicted to this night photography stuff.

You can prolly send them to the HPD Mounted Patrol unit on disc. I'm sure they'd get a kick out of it.
