Re: Assignment #85 - On The Down Low (ENTRY)

Wow, what a great turnout. I'm very impressed with all of them so this is going to be really tough to pick.

Voni: You have a way with colors like no one else I've seen. For some reason the colors in your photos just seem to pop so much more than in other people's photos. The contrasting dark green foliage mixed with the dark "storm is coming" sky is a wonderful balance. I can't help but wonder though, what would the composition look like if the camera were more underneath the parrot looking almost straight up into the sky?

Janet: What can I say, you nailed the perspective challenge. Everyone has seen a pool table, but never in this way. The framing is dead on through the mesh of the pocket and you even got the reflection of the three ball to add to the overall photo. I wish I could even say something to improve upon but even your focus on the 8 is so sharp I can see the specs of chalk on top of the ball. Very well done!

Butte: I like the color, and because I work in a warehouse I'm very familiar with skids. Actually more familiar that I would like to be. But I'm wondering if there is a different angle to shoot this at in order to better show people what exactly it is. Maybe a little wider angle that shows the whole of the pallet from the same height.

Brotha J: That is one content fairly large kitty cat. Technically a great photo, with really good lighting, good exposure, and interesting subject matter. The one thing I am scratching my head at is that while cats are in fact lower to the ground than we are, the perspective that you shot at is something very similar to how we see cats in every day life. What would a cat's head look like from underneath while throwing down on a big yawn?

Ed29: A rare but great shot of a piece of the desert in bloom. Great perspective, good colors, and a good contrast. Just a really good shot IMO

Keith: I mean, come on man, how can you go wrong with a low profile shot of a sweet looking bike like the Z-Rex? Great lighting, good reflection, and an overall good shot.

achesley: Great shot of a really cool old church. Nice down low perspective, good balance of sky and structure for my tastes, and I like the grass blades in the foreground of the photo.

Duke: You aren't going to get much lower than that my friend. If I had to guess, is it a frame grab from a GoPro or similar video camera? Only reason I ask is because the photo does seem to be a little soft.

tim_cannon: Skill, concentration, more balance that I think I will ever have. And we haven't even started to talk about the picture yet. The photo is sharp as can be, which probably isn't the easiest to do since I can't imagine your subject was exactly standing still. Your photo shows great skill with shooting directly up into the sky yet everything is exposed perfectly.

Man... this is tough. You all did more than I could have hoped to accomplish. In fact I really wanted to throw a photo in as well, but every shot I took just didn't stand up to the entries here. Today the winner of this contest for the pure execution of the theme would be Janet. This was one heck of a hard decision I promise you all.

So congrats to Janet on this one. Setup, lighting, focus, and overall composition were spot on. You are up!

Re: Assignment #85 - On The Down Low (ENTRY)

Wow! Thanks Bill and Tim. Everyone posted a great shot and I loved Rachel's with the tiny spider webs inside. Iam very honored!
I took around 25 photos trying to get all of the elements correct at the same time. I ended up with a small, hand held LED lantern for the lighting over the pocket and I bumped up the shutter speed.
I had to use the little D40 because it has the remote shutter release. I really need one of those for the D100, but the big camera was too big to get on a tripod under the pocket. My tripod will widen out and get pretty low to the ground, but not enough for that big camera.

I will think on this and post up a new topic tomorrow.

Good job Janet!

Thanks for the comment Bill. That creosote bush is only a foot tall, so getting the camera low enough to frame that branch against the clouds was a fun challenge.
