Re: good helmet suggestion

Over the past 12 years I've worn Arai, Shoei, HJC, AGV and most recently a Bell. The most comfortable helmet and fit me the best is the Bell RS-1. 2nd best would be the Arai, followed by the Shoei.

My first Bell had a manufacturing issue (glue released the pad mount from the shell). I had to go back to my Arai Signet for a few weeks while they shipped me a new one (at no cost). Although I liked the Arai (it was well worn at this point), I couldn't wait for the Bell to get back. The Arai had much more noise from the upper vents and had a slightly smaller viewport.

Try out a Bell. Problem is, not many carry the RS-1 in the DFW area.

One other thing to consider, be careful about selecting a helmet designed for racing. At first that meant to me it had the best of the best. When I tried a couple, I found the air vents are located further back for a racing tuck. Not always the best for the street.

Good luck!

Please focus on the comments regarding fit. When you're wearing the helmet you won't care how elegant you look if you're miserable.

Sadly, I can tell you from experience that the best shop clerk can't help with what you really need to know:
How will this helmet feel in an hour, or in 4 hours?

My first helmet was a Scorpion. I seem to have an oval head and they seem to be more round. It would press against my forehead and become unbearable after a few hours.
Next came a pricey Shoie. I love it and have worn it comfortably day after day.
Last year I bought a Schuberth (if you have to ask you can't afford one) they were all that, had a sunshade and for only another $400.00 I could get a wowie zowie Bluetooth comm. insert.

Well, it fits me like a Scorpion and the comm feature was useless.

So, I'll be a good Shoie customer from here on out.

Since I'm WAY over 25 I don't buy for graphics and style. My headgear is always plain white or silver.

That's the truth. Any quality DOT helmet you consider should fit your head shape well for it to be a good helmet for you.

When you buy at Cycle Gear, you have 7 days to decide if you like the helmet. If you find the fit is not what you want, you can exchange it for a different size, color, or brand.

I want to know if CG is selling these returned helmet as new. Or do CG sell them as used with discount? I think used helmets are gross.

Find a helmet that fits. Do NOT go order one online without at least trying something on locally. If you get a helmet that does not fit properly you will be uncomfortable on the ride. You can get it too tight, too loose, you can have pressure points on your head, causing head-aches. Too many issues to not spend some time getting a helmet that fits.

I can usually tell if a helmet fits in a couple minutes of having it on.

As to the brand - so far in the thread:

Shoei
Arai
Shark
Scorpian
Bell
HJC
AGV
Icon

BTW, Shark is my choice. Now go try some helmets on!

You try helmets on in a retail store with the intention of walking out and buying online?

Nope. I buy local when I can, or order online. But if I get another helmet of the same model, I would order online.

Thus far, both of my Shark helmets have been local shops in Burleson, and my HJC was ordered online by my wife after I tried them on at the International Motorcycle show at the little HJC kiosk (no helmets for sale...) We also bought her Shoei at the show with the dealer that helped fit her.

Why?

Shark? Sounds interesting. Let me see which of them are nice. But you're right I guess I have to find a helmet that fits me. However, I seldom find some stores out there that has the helmet that I like. That is the reason why I try to search on line because they have various types of helmets to choose.

Re: good helmet suggestion

I have a Bell Star and the RS (Race Street)1 from Bell that I wear regularly.
I have worn both for a year. My helmet of choice before these two was a
Shoei RF1100. I wear the Star when it is very hot out as the ventilation is
amazing (but it is not a quiet helmet due to all the air going through it).
The Roland Sands Design RS1 I wear when it is cooler and I want something
quieter (it is fiberglass so it feels very similar too and is as quiet as the RF)
I love the Star because it is lite (carbon fiber) and moves enough air to be
cool in this hot and humid climate. So yes there are lots of great helmets..

Hi. thanks. Where did you purchase your helmets? I found some bell helmets in Jafrum. Also, there is Arai. Have you experienced dealing with this store? I like their helmets, actually.

I checked the brand that you use and its good. Fortunately, Jafrum have that kind of brand so maybe I'll have to purchase it.

Re: good helmet suggestion

Can't express enough how much fit means over looks. Go to a store, try some on. Write down which models fit. See if they have a catalog or look up online the models that fit and see if they have graphics you like.

I tried on several models. I found a Bell Vortex fits my head nicely. Bell Star and Bell Arrow do not. Like others I have an oval shaped head versus a round head. Previously I had a Scorpion 1000 that pressed against my forehead (it had a round shape) that gave me a headache after about an hour and after two hours I had to get it off or I'd die. There is nothing worse than getting a great looking helmet only to find it didn't fit your head correctly. Find the ones that fit first then look to see what designs they offer in that model. I wish I could wear a Bell Star, they have cool graphics and really light weight, but they don't fit my head.

Every helmet sold in America is DOT approved (or should be). Every SNELL approved helmet is also DOT approved. DOT helmets are not necessarily less protective than SNELL helmets. Full face helmets are the most protective and I won't wear anything less.

Re: good helmet suggestion

I knew within seconds of putting it on that my Shoei was the right one for me. It fits good enough to show me how bad other helmets in the past had fit me.

I'm sure there is a perfect fit one for anyone out there if they are diligent with trying them on.

Re: good helmet suggestion

You would need to figure out your head shape and then you can try helmet made for head shape..
Price wisely can be from $100-500 and each are different..
I use Arai Quantum II and I have not find anything else better fit then this old helmet, I tried several other brands and nothing yet feel right fit...
Good luck...
