Assignment #86, Long-Exposure Photography (COMMENT)

Use this thread for posting your comments, and/or current/prior work for assignment #86: Long-exposure photography, and for this assignment, that will be defined as a shutter speed of 1 second or more.
Leaving the shutter open on a fixed camera can result in some great creativity and astonishing photos. Don’t forget though, the camera can be moving on a still subject. Also, the shutter can be opened and closed several times to get a “time lapse” look or feel. THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX.
This assignment will also allow for some painting with light if you are so inclined.

Any equipment that you can achieve a minimum of a 1 second shutter speed will do (point & shoot, DSLR, or film). CROPPING IS OK, BUT PLEASE REFRAIN FROM POST EDITING. All shooters are welcome, and all forum posting rules apply regarding suitability of an image to post.
I am looking for the WOW factor. That is all. Elaborate staging will not be as much of a factor as, “Wow!”
I have attached a link to some examples, along with one of my shots.

Your ENTRY photograph has to have been taken between now and Monday, July 30th at midnight.
Examples:

I love me some long exposures. I can't wait to try some new tricks with this one.

Re: Assignment #86, Long-Exposure Photography (COMMENT)

Another not very good example of mine. I did not have a tripod and I was standing on the deck of a ship that was tied up at Hamburg harbor. I had the camera braced pretty well but the moving water caused me to have the blur.

Big Sur under Moonlight

Oh the timing.

I was stuck on CA-1 at around 10ish - July 7th or 8th. With the CA nuts driving like they do on freeways, we decided to stop for the night. The fog broke just enough to show the hills going into Pacific under the moonlight.

It was a mad rush to pull the jacket on, find the camera, test the settings, make sure the lens is not fogged up, find a stable spot so a 5D with a L series lens is not sacrificed to gods of the Pacific, set up the shot, etc,etc...

Turns out 15+ seconds was the magic number. So I set up the shot and wait. Well, 15 seconds in cold Pacific wind is more like an hour. So here it is, without any clean up since you can see the red taillights and headlights of cars on CA-1.

This was a moonbow near Ophir, Colorado, a couple years ago - 15.0 seconds on a tripod with my Rebel XSi:

And a lightning storm a couple days later in New Mexico; same deal:

Re: Assignment #86, Long-Exposure Photography (COMMENT)

I came up with something last night and fogot the part about no post processing. In this case shooting in RAW is a disadvantage, but oh well, I'm going to just go with it. I'll post the edited version in this thread. It's not a huge difference, but there is a difference.

Re: Assignment #86, Long-Exposure Photography (COMMENT)

I don't have any entry of my own, cuz I suck at photography.

However, one of my best friends from high school is a great photographer, who had a fun story with a photo I bought from him, and I had to share:

It was just about dark when he set up his shot. He held open the shutter for a minute, then closed it. Since he couldn't hardly see at that point, he figured there wasn't much to be had, but he developed it anyway. Also, the slightest bit of wind would ruin the photo.

He was pleased with the results, and so am I...!

Andrew T. Those are excellent shots. That lighting storm is outstanding!

buck000. I hope to be able to capture images like your best friend one day.

Klb1122. Glad you posted up, I didn't even catch the NO POST EDITING portion of the rules. Like you, I shoot RAW as well. I was in San Francisco & Monterey last week and got some shots that I thought about submitting. But alas, they do not conform to the rules.

Like this mildly massaged 8.0 Sec, capture, with the camera bag as the tripod of sorts.

Re: Assignment #86, Long-Exposure Photography (COMMENT)

Janet, if my entry doesn't meet the rules then by all means you can have Scott pull it out. It was shot in raw, but the only thing that is done to it is a crop and then exported to my Photobucket account as a JPEG.

Now I am working on an edited one that I want to have printed to see how well it looks.

Re: Assignment #86, Long-Exposure Photography (COMMENT)

I'll let Janet call it how she wants. The way I read it, a crop is OK and converting from RAW to .jpg is not post-processing in my book. It's a conversion from one format to another with no manipulation in between. That's my thought at least....

That is correct, Scott. Sorry I did not see this earlier. Busy week...
RAW is fine, just no retouching.
