This sounds promising. Tourmeister, how often do you get to see the trails?

Almost never... I live about 15 miles to the NE of them in Huntsville. So the weather is often similar here and there, but not always. It is pouring outside right now... I think we are up to about 2-1/2" since yesterday morning.

Lies are fragile. They require constant attentiveness to keep them alive. The exposure of a single truth can rip through an ocean of lies, evaporating it instantly. - Brandon Smith

If you want government to intervene domestically, you’re a liberal. If you want government to intervene overseas, you’re a conservative. If you want government to intervene everywhere, you’re a moderate. If you don’t want government to intervene anywhere, you’re an extremist. — Joe Sobran

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance. – Murray N. Rothbard

Where politicians flourish, long history has harshly taught us, people and their liberty wither. Where the state is god and the "public interest" worshipped, individual man will be found bleeding upon the altar. - Karl Hess

The accepted wisdom is that without the state, society would collapse into lawlessness and crime. In fact, lawlessness and crime define the very nature of the state and the society organized by it. - Bionic Mosquito

But the myth of the rule of law does more than render the people submissive to state authority; it also turns them into the state's accomplices in the exercise of its power. For people who would ordinarily consider it a great evil to deprive individuals of their rights or oppress politically powerless minority groups will respond with patriotic fervor when these same actions are described as upholding the rule of law. - John Hasnas

Probably too late for you to see, but I am going to try to get there at 7:30- I'll look for you around 9. I'll be in a white chevy truck with a little trailer and a KLX450.

No idea if I'll actually get there early or not, but that's the plan.

Re: Semi-permanent SHNF thread

Sorry. I couldn't make it. I stayed up late last night trying to finish up on the KDX rebuild so I could ride it. And I ended up breaking the KIPS system. So, I was exhausted and couldn't get up in the morning. Now I'm screwed. I heard a snap behind the engine cover. A spring in there must have broke or something.

A few of us are riding tomorrow, East Side 9:30am. Bring your XR instead and tackle your KDX engine rebuild issues another day.

TwoSmokeDS aka KI aka texasnh (dang you change your name alot, who you running from? haha) I saw your car and trailer at the trailhead today. Our riding partner called early morn and advised running late so we didn't arrive until around 10:15am or so. You were already out on the trails. We did a mega 2-1/2 hr loop and when we got back to the trailhead you were gone. Sorry we missed you.

Re: Semi-permanent SHNF thread

Sorry. I got there a little after 9:30. I thought you guys had already took off to the trail. I didn't
know what car/truck you drove. So I tried the mega loop clockwise, but gave up after doing 20 miles and took the forest road back to my car. It was hot! I'm not in the best of shape, and I didn't get enough sleep the night before. That's about all the excuses I can come up with. When I got back to the car, I was low on electrolytes and feeling very miserable but had no food or gatorade. So I left to get food and drink in Willis.

Re: Semi-permanent SHNF thread

Black Honda Fit pulling a trailer, you probably saw it when you left. My son got really zapped of energy also and needed to stop for the day when we returned around 1:30pm. I was ready and wanting to ride more, score: 52 yr old - 1, 17 yr old - 0. But he's not fully acclimated to Texas weather yet so understandable.

Re: Semi-permanent SHNF thread

I was out on Saturday - met up with some guys that hang out on thumpertalk. Trails were fairly sandy, but there are workarounds for all the fallen logs now - although some of them will sneak up on you

I covered 38 miles on the last two loops - I forgot to count the first one, so I 'm guessing around 55 miles from 8:00 to about 2:30. Those guys were just exactly the right speed for me, but I was the only one that did 3 loops (two guys did the first 2 loops, one guy just did the second one, and one guy did the last 2 loops). That third one may have been a mistake - I had trouble getting the bike onto the trailer afterwards. Not to mention that I believe I may still be too sore next weekend to ride........

On the up side - it was my first time out there with my KLX450 - and I did hit a couple of whoops sections fairly well - not floating over the tops, but timing jumps so that there was a little more flow and not so much being thrown around. I need to practice where there is a little more run up to the whoops and not a turn immediately after..

Thats amazing considering the heat. The heat sneaks up on you and can put you in a very serious state before you realize it. It messes with your decision making ability and is very dangerous. The TSCEC abandoned summer enduros after a couple very hardy, seasoned participants died in those conditions. Glad y'all had a good time, just be very careful about things when taking that "just one more" loop. Never, ever, never go into the woods without a camelback, a cooler full of water and some form of electrolyte replacement and a large dose of common sense. Never. July thru Sept; leave the macho at home.

Agreed - I'm still learning when to cut the day short, but I have learned to carry plenty of water on the trails and drink gatorade or some similar fluid during camp breaks, thirsty or not. I'll probably be taking a break for a month or so (at least from the forest), at least partly just so that I'll miss out on the hot weather riding. It's just not as much fun.

I must have spent most of my energy on them logs. If I have awesome log climbing skills, I probably would be able to ride twice the distance.

And never start a loop with only 2hrs of sunlight left.

Re: Semi-permanent SHNF thread

Few of us are taking an early weekday ride tomorrow, East Side at 7:30am. If you're arriving after 8am shoot me a PM and we'll trade phone numbers for a meet up later at the trailhead. I'm driving a Black Honda Fit.

Slow riders or big dual sport bikes ok for this ride. My son is a beginner and seldom gets out of first gear. As long as you have decent sand skills you'll be ok. Riding early to avoid the heat, we should get in a couple good loops before noon.

SHNF nearly killed Silver and Little Bullets and myself today. Riding from 8:30am to 1:30pm. We all ran outta water in our camelbaks and we called it the day. Today was tuff!

Whoa, I know how that goes. Several yrs ago I was riding my 1st KDX out there(the same one I sold SilverBullet for Lil Bullet last year) and I thought I'd be smart by putting my camelback bladder in my sisters rv freezer the night before. Froze it into a block of ice. It was melting pretty good by the time we got to the trailhead BUT about an hour into the ride 80% of it was still frozen solid and I was very, very thirsty! Wound up having to stop and lay the bladder in the sun (after finding some sun) and just wait for it to melt. That sucked, I was miserably thirsty! So much for that bright idea.
