I'd like to join tomorrow but it will probably be a few more weeks before I get my crash gear. Still unsure about joining the DS days until the bike is armored.

Any thoughts on tomorrow's route riding a Super Tenere with Battlewing tires and no armor?

I think you will be fine as long as you have protection for yourself and bring plenty of water. All the dirt roads are like in the pictures above. The slippery creek crossings cause most problems but are not that bad.

The only thing i would worry about is if you happen to drop your bike and don't have any guards on your handlebars, you might break a clutch or brake lever.

There has been a bike or two with similar tread to the battlewings.

The drier the roads get, the more some of them have some sandy/gravely mix in places.....but as long as you have a decent speed (40 to 45 mph or more) and stay relaxed and guide the bike where you want it to go, you will glide right through the loose stuff.

The water crossings are beginning to dry up, but I am sure we will encounter some wet and slimey crossing. For those, a slow and steady balanced approach is best. When it comes to slime it doesn't matter what kind of tires you have. If the water wants you to get wet.......well let's just say you have to try a little harder to keep the rubber side down.

It's your call.....we would like for you to ride with us whenever you're ready.

I would not risk it. I don't ride dual-sport, unless I have full protection. It is not worth the risk of crashing and then having to deal with personal and bike injuries.

In the future, bring a pressure gauge and drop about 5-10 pounds of pressure from the back and front tire to help traction on the loose stuff.

Oh yea, bring plenty of water. This is summer in Texas.

I always recommend hydrating days before you ride or simply staying hydrated all the time.

I have been using the home made electrolyte (sp?) stuff that was on another thread (Bastrop Trails?) and it has been awesome for me.

mix a few tablespoons of sugar (I use 3 tablespoons of local honey - Fains), with 0.5 teaspoon of baking soda and 0.5 teaspoon of iodized salt in water (I heat up one cup of H2O in the microwave so all the stuff mixes easier) and pour the mix into the water in my camelbak bladder. For really hot days, I only fill the baldder half way, and blow some air into it so cap and the tube are clear of the liquid when you lay it flat and then I put it in the freezer over night.

The next morning I take the bladder with the flozen stuff out of the freezer and lay it on the counter for a few minutes to let the cap thawout a little. Then I open the cap and pour in the rest of the stuff. It stays pretty cold during the ride until about mid-day when the frozen portion is all melted....but it is still cool.

The taste of the mix takes just a little getting used to, slightly salty/slightly sweet but it keeps water, salt and sugars flowing through your body and a lot less cost than gator/powerade.

Re: Austin Texas Hill Country Dual Sport Day Trips

Thanks for the feedback guys. By no armor I was strictly referring to the bike...I'm always armored.

I've had the S10 on dirt (2-up even) and it handled great...but it's the water crossings that scare me a bit. I know first hand how quickly moss can take you down, lol! Might just hold out while I wait for delivery of my parts. I'd kick myself for being impatient if I did damage with the crash gear on the way.

Not a problem.

Look at it this way....in a few more weeks (mid to late September) the weather "may" be getting cooler.

Re: Austin Texas Hill Country Dual Sport Day Trips

That's a great idea bikejones!!

Bike problems with the KLR seems I have a coolant leak spewing coolant on my cylinder head and exhaust so it's in the shop I was hoping it would have been done before today so I'll have to skip this Saturday ride!

Don't think doing this ride on my C14 fare or fun! LoL

Don't know if I'll ever get to make this ride...

have fun guys and I'll just have to see all the RR & Pics...

Re: Austin Texas Hill Country Dual Sport Day Trips

Another awesome ride today. The weather actually felt cool.

We went down a few dead end roads that were well worth it.

Matter of fact.......they were so good we rode them twice……..once down and once back.

Only a few little wet creek crossing remain…..and they’re still slimey…..but no falls…….and no falls in any loose stuff on the roads.

rlcanon, Lamar568, GlockPointer and I met up at Backwoods in Bee Cave Texas………

We rode out 962 to CR301 to Hwy 281 and met up with Infidel at the Shell in Round Mountain Texas (on Hwy 281)……..

Mini Enchanted Rock…….

Cave in a cliff in the distance………

Random shots along the ride........

Bikes at the quarry lake…….

GlockPointer demonstrating how to turn around on a hill………
