Re: LA Barstow to Vegas 2012

It doesn't look like a problem as long as the bike is not over 96db and has an approved spark arrestor. I'm still working to confirm.

D'oh, that's where the link sent me. I'll see what can come up with.

Re: LA Barstow to Vegas 2012

This is a little worrying, I have an after market exhaust and i bought a spark arrestor from eBay and fitted it. I doubt it's an approved spark arrestor, it's just a large cone made of a fine metal gauze that was inserted inside the exhaust at the end.. Maybe I need to find a stock silencer and fit that? Will probably mess up my jetting..

They will likely look for the stamp in the metal saying it is USFS Approved.

Re: LA Barstow to Vegas 2012

Mark,
Sorry I missed your post. Right now we have two confirmed and a third very serious about the trip. We're meeting another TWTer (ThasherG who's running the TAT now) in Vegas. From there, our group is planning on bring all the bikes to Palmdale for the start then using ThrasherG's rig to return us to Palmdale.

We'll be leaving the Monday before and returning later in the following week depending on how much riding we do in Arizona.

I've talked to another couple of guys who may or may not be interested or able. I'd like to see another rig go so we can support each other in case there is a problem. We're good for hauling no more than three bikes on my trailer since we have to pick up one in Las Vegas.

Now is the time to start planning. You may want to follow the AMA Group 37 Dual Sport board for possible options. I'll PM you with a number.

Re: LA Barstow to Vegas 2012

Well I paid the money for a Leo Vince X3 with proper spark arrestor. I also got my roll chart holder and new MT21s (if they last that long.)

Which chart holder did you buy? I've still not sure if I want the big 3"x4" one or the small 2"x2" countdown holder.

Better order another MT21 rear tire as in 4 months there probably won't be enough tread left to be a good desert tire.

The way that it was explained to me is that the USFS uses a "stick" test in the absence of the USFS approval decal. The stick test just involves inserting a pencil, stick, etc. into the pipe to determine the existance of a spark arrestor. I hope this is cool because my XRs Only pipe has no USFS approval decal.

Re: LA Barstow to Vegas 2012

Moving right along, got the Dirt Bagz racks (originally for the 650, required a few mods to fit the 440) and the aux tank installed. Filled the tank and added some bricks to the 'Bagz for ballast and went for a trial run yesterday.

Now I get to tear it all back apart to wire up the GPS. It'll get the full test on the EastTex 450 next week. Wish me luck. Oh, and the rubber strap is only there to hold my hat.

California here we come....

Re: LA Barstow to Vegas 2012

Alright Rman, you really peaked my interest and I need to look at the logistics of this, I'd like to join you guys if there is room. If we need a bigger trailer I can accomidate but I can't justify the fuel cost to take a whole rig out there, truck and trailer hit me a PM and lets discuss further. Talk soon, Travis

Re: LA Barstow to Vegas 2012

Gary other than trying to do mileage math in my head, looking over my shoulder to see if I still had followers, and occasionally dodging holes in the road and the odd rabid dog chasing me, there really wasn't much to tell. We did have a couple spectacular get-offs but nothing on film. Unfortunate when you lead, hard to know when to turn around to catch the crash. I'm about 75% in as of this morning, just need to know if there is room in the crew. Talk soon, Travis

Re: LA Barstow to Vegas 2012

Time to finalize all of the plans. We're trailered for 3 bikes, so Travis, if you are coming, we will need your trailer for four. Rman is finishing up the deal on the RV. Thrasher and I have a couple of reservations to make. Other than that, we should be ready (personal bike preparation.) four in the RV will be better than 3 on fuel.

Next time we are running Lavaca county I'll send you a PM.
