Alternator testing.....

I think my alternator is broke. The manual says it should be 14.7V at 4000RPM, but I'm getting about 12.2V.

Can you take the alternator to a shop to have it tested like with an alternator for a car?

Is there a place in DFW to look for a used alternator?

If you are testing it while the battery is still connected, that will skew your results quite a bit.

Re: Alternator testing.....

Ebay if it's infact burnt up and it's not the Regulator/Rectifier.

Not sure what kind of setup the Connie has but if you have a multi-meter you should be able to diagnose it fairly easily.

Where's Mansfield at in relation to Saginaw?

Re: Alternator testing.....

I have done some checking with the multimeter, but I need to separate the coils from the regulator to check it properly. That's a Saturday morning thing. For now, I'm charging it overnight and that gets me to and from work.

Mansfield is south of LA (Lower Arlington).

Re: Alternator testing.....

The testing for your Alt is laid out in the service manual, if you have not seen that...

Hope that helps...

Re: Alternator testing.....

odd those alternators are known to be virtualy bullet proof.

there is generaly a few on E-bay at any time. you can also upgrade to a zzr1200 alternator for a 50% boost in output but they don't come up on E-bay very often and it requires some re-wiring.

Re: Alternator testing.....

ZRX alternator should bolt right up, another option for parts if needed.

Re: Alternator testing.....

Is it easy to swap the RR unit to verify its condition? Can you swap a known good battery? If, as some have said, the alt is bullet proof[though not infallible], perhaps something else is wrong. Are all connections clean and tight? If your meter can read up to 20 Amps you could put it in SERIES with the battery and read charging current[you would have to bump start bike to keep current draw under 20 Amps]. I tried to read procedure in posted service manual but print was too small. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Re: Alternator testing.....

Where's my brain? We sell a cheap clamp on ammeter for around $40. I'm sure you could find one in your area.
Found this:
Amazon.com: Auto ranging AC/DC Digital Clamp Meter: Home Improvement Amazon.com: Auto ranging AC/DC Digital Clamp Meter: Home Improvement

Re: Alternator testing.....

I pulled it off and apart this morning. The rotor winding is bad. I ordered a used alternator from a parts shop on EBay. For now I'll just have to put the charger on the battery every night so I can get back and forth to work.

I have been considering an ammeter for a while but thought they would be too expensive. I guess I'll have a look next time I'm in HF.
