Re: Rockin the Western Slope

Traditional? Oh yeah!

That's an apple cobbler cooked in a dutch oven beside the campfire in Ouray. It was so purdy that I just couldn't bring myself to butcher it. But then Webnel said if he took some really good pictures of it I could put them on my wall at home to admire any time I wanted. Meanwhile, he and some others would take good care of the cobbler and I needn't worry myself about it ever again. Whataguy!

Re: Rockin the Western Slope

The apple cobbler was some really tasty stuff! My only concern was drawing bear from the caves that was directly behind my tent.

I am glad to see there was someone to help those Johnson bros find their way. They are getting old and forgetful.

Ahhhh, Thats the type of selfless, do anything for you type of guys you meet dualsporting. That would be fantastic after a days riding.

Re: Rockin the Western Slope

I drove 20 hours in a truck and then 9 more on the trails to get some of that cobbler. It was worth every mile.

Those silly bears decided the trashcan outside my room, 3 feet from my bike, was a better target.

A bartender told me about this local bear attack back in 2009.

Re: Rockin the Western Slope

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that participated in this year's trip. Caught up with some old friends, and met some new ones as well. Got back safe and sound, but had to start back to working nights, so it will be awhile before I get my videos sorted out. Sure hope everyone else made it back without incident.

So glad to hear that Larry is doing okay, and sure pray that the elbow will heal up well enough that he'll be riding with us again real soon. God bless you, Larry, and keep us posted on the progress.

Re: Rockin the Western Slope

We need more pictures!! I only took pictures on Monday, which was mostly overcast, and only on Yankee Boy and Goveners Basin.

On the roof at the Ouray Brewery and took this one.

Well, RG is the best narrator, so I'll let him tell the tale. Anyhow, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so video aught to be even more right? So here's one to get us started:

Re: Rockin the Western Slope

First half of this is approaching the summit of Corkscrew pass. We started from Ironton park which is probably around 8K altitude and down among the trees and streams and pretty stuff. The trail is a rapid accent and the pass is fairly high as you can tell from the lack of trees or much of anything other than Type A rocks. There are several steep/loose switchbacks along the way that usually turn some bikes around. Didn't happen this time. We had an unusually good group of riders. We're seeing Clutchless on her TW200 and it's wheezing like a freighter's mule making that altitude.

Rydah and I usually swapped out riding sweep but somehow he manged to be in place to help A LOT of folks along during the day...even riding their bikes through the rough stuff, walking back down - or up - and then riding his own. This didn't just happen a couple of times. He's in way better shape than most other old guys.
Could be we have a different manner of compassion, too. My approach goes something like " What's wrong? You outa gas? Then stand on those pegs and ride it like you got a pair! Worst that can happen is you fall on your ___. Now kick that pig and lets go!" OK...the compassion meter hardly moved but I do stop!

The NW side of the pass is where we usually see snow. Not this year as the locals said it just didn't happen last winter. As he's waiting for the crew to come on down from the pass, we see Clutchless cruise by stomping that back break going down the hill. The TW offers somewhere around zero engine breaking so unless someone is into a downhill luge experience, breaking is it. This comes back to bite her later in the day...

Re: Rockin the Western Slope

On my last day I checked out the national forest that is just east of Ridgway (just north of Ouray) and found it has a good amount of trails in it. It was very unpopluated like the typical Ouray area stompping grounds. Looks like a good porstion of the trails are in woods too. Here's a quick vid of one of the trails. It seems to be open to all but Jeeps. I'd like to spend a day out there next time.

Re: Rockin the Western Slope

Real nice videos, Mike; thanks for sharing. Really like the looks of those wood trails. Got any tracks to share, showing where they are? That last video is Lost Creek trail. GoPro just doesn't let you really see how steep or curvy it actually is though. Looks smooth when you watch it.

Last year we rode it the opposite way, up. It was wetter then, and was a bit of a challenge for traction in some spots. Riding down was maybe a bit harder though, and even though it was dry, it was real loose on the steeper sections. You can hear the brakes locking up in Mikes videos.

Here's another one of Lost Creek:

I'll try to post some more as I have time, but the super slow uploads to YouTube sucks!

Re: Rockin the Western Slope

Just a few weeks too late, but I have it now (really would have been nice on this trip). Like new '08 crf450x bone stock with original tires that are at 90% still. Almost went ktm or berg, but this popped up just miles from me and I love honda's anyway. It'll be plated soon.
