WTB Dual Sport

I currently work in South Texas for a directional drilling company and have to spend about 5 more months down here. The reason I am looking for a DS is the lease road I work off of is 12 miles off the paved road. The lease road is pretty bad and its tearing my truck apart.

What I am looking for is a DS that is inexpensive and cosmetic condition is not an issue. What matters most is that the bike run well; the last thing I need to have happen is the bike break down on me 6 miles down a 12 mile road.

I have a good idea of what these bikes go for and I am looking to spend around 1000-2000 depending on the bike and quality. If you have an old DS your looking to get rid of please let me know.

Re: WTB Dual Sport

Yes, something along those lines...250 would work though.

However I am looking for something a little larger.

Thanks

I am in Cotulla, which is about 60 miles north of Laredo. But I live in Austin and get to go home for about a day or two once or twice a month.

Also if you want to spend a little more money. It comes with a dirt setup so you can swap back and forth. It's kick only and requires a key.

That XT gets my vote.

I bet you only ever change the oil and tires.

Good Luck with your hunt on the DS bike. A KLR 650 sound like just what your asking for.

Not to tell you what to do, as you probably already know this, but make sure you check with the operator / lease holder to see if two wheeled travel is even permitted. I can rattle off 10 operators in one breath that no longer permit bikes on their lease roads and locations. I also don't know who you are employed by as a DD, but if your with one of the two biggest in the game, they also prohibit two wheeled travel on leases.

Just check to make sure before you drop the coin.

Nice XT! That's my vote too.

I have a buddy who works out of Carizo springs as a floor hand. He rides two wheels, everyone thinks he's crazy but they certainly allow it. Was riding a KLR now on a tiger he bought off of here last week.

I rode down to his site in August. Much respect for the environment you guys work in and condition so close to the border. Stay safe and enjoy two wheels.

I probably worked either on your buddies rig or right next to his... I spent about three months.

To everyone that said the XT would be their choice, I am curious as to why. I have always been a big fan of yamaha motors so that I understand. I am new to the DS world and do not know much about the XT. I was hoping someone could fill me in.

I greatly appreciate everyone's willingness to help me out.

Eventually I would like to host a TWT ride and BBQ out at my ranch. My ranch is in Johnson City and is a perfect central location for some great roads through the Hill Country.

Re: WTB Dual Sport

I've got a 2000 Kawasaki Sherpa that I was going to try and sell in a bit. It's in very good condition with almost 10k miles. Runs great, front and rear disk brakes, 6-speed transmisison, digital spedo/odo.
The tires have about 65-70% left, o-ring chain and new sprockets about 2k ago.
No rust in or on the metal tank. Adult owned and well maintained.

I'm in Houston and asking $1900 for the bike. If your intrested shoot me a private message. I can deliver to Austin or San Antonia for free as I travel there for work frequently.

Re: WTB Dual Sport

The XT is a proven, reliable design and a simple one. While not a powerhouse like the race bred machines, it is fast enough to be entertaining if you decide to twist its tail.

That Sherpa is a great machine too. We put a few thousand miles on one a couple of years back. Loved that little bike.

Re: WTB Dual Sport

My vote on the XT was a combination of price, mileage, year and condition. That XT looks like a great bike. You have to decide what's most important. The price seemed excellent for what you are getting. Personally never ridden an XT but have heard guys talk very highly of them.

If it's not price and your willing to spend more than I would look for something with a little bit more motor and wind protection. Since your coming from Austin you will still have a lot of pavement to ride. For that pavement a KLR or Vstrom might be more desirable and can still get down a lease road just great. They won't set land speed records but will comfortable cruise at 70. Also you want to give consideration to luggage where your boots, hardhat and things are going to go.

Re: WTB Dual Sport

I was looking for something that had a bit more motor, but I am not opposed to picking the best deal if it has a smaller motor.

What my plan was for the bike was to use my truck to bring it down to location and have it as a second vehicle on location. My lease road is awful on my truck, but for a dirt bike it would be no thing. So mostly storage would be for some groceries and small errands. Mostly I leave location to get away from the rig. Unfortunately I do not get a rotation schedule like most people that work in my field. I stay on location until the well is finished then I get a few days off while they move the rig.

So riding a bike is my escape from reality if you will. A way to get back to my happy place. I have a sport bike at the house, problem is I just never get to ride it. So a DS would be my solution to get back on a bike.

I've had a KX250 and loved it. I also had an XR400, but I have never had one that has been street legal.

Thanks to everyone for their opinion and offers, I'm still very interested in offers and will have a day off either tomorrow or Thursday to purchase a bike.
