That was depressing...... True I know. At 37 now, I know these days are coming faster than I'd chose to believe, but it is what it is. For now I ride when I can and enjoy it as much as possible.

For me, I think either a lighter bike or can am'ish machine would be a good compromise. Can Am looks fun now, but too much garage space and expense required.

Re: Aging and motorcycling

I'll be 67 next week , still on 2 wheels despite major health problems...Don't wear the sides instead of the middle of the tires as much as I did in the past...I mentioned trading the FJR on a Miata and wife said "You have been riding 2 wheels since you were 5 and you are not going to stop doing something you love"....I'll keep Her--44 Years so far....Sold the Jag's ,Austin Healy's ,Lotus , and MG's so the only thing I have left topless is our 86 Mustang 5.0 5 speed GT conv. project...and some bikes..Trikes scare me , I can just see the forks folding under sideways.......

Re: Aging and motorcycling

I built a sidecar so that I could take my wife in her wheelchair for rides and it turned out that her neck muscles could not keep up with the weight of her head. I have ridden this rig very hard both on gravel and paved roads and the rig leaves me in better shape to face a physical work week as it improves the condition of core muscles better than any workout I have found to date.

I love my long fast rides on two wheels but 150-250 miles on the sidecar rig is much more fun, even if it takes a few minutes longer to finish the ride.

Those that are unwilling to even consider a sidecar, may already know that they don't have the ability to control their brain long enough to learn a new way of thinking.

I'm sure some will take offence to the above statement, but if you do, ask your self why it really was able to take control and screw with your day.

When that day comes, I'll look into a sidecar. They're cool anyway. Conventional trikes don't do it for me. A Canam spyder might.

It'll be a long time before I can't ride unless something catastrophic happens. I'm 56 and I can still pick up the wing. Don't ask me how I know that though.

Not having any interest in riding a hack , is not even close to your blanket inflammatory remarks.

Bottom line, you assume too much and spout silliness in response .

Id bet many like myself have considered trikes or hacks for what comes after the day 2 wheels is no longer viable.. and like I have, some have simply decided, three wheels is not what we want, it does not bring what we love about riding to the table.. So while it may be a great solution for some, it's not for us.. or at least me.

So it has been Considered.. and Rejected... three wheels, IS NOT MOTORCYCLING in my humble and personal opinion..

If it works for you great but, if you don't have the ability to control your brain long enough to understand people are different in there wants and needs perhaps you need a new way of thinking.

Re: Aging and motorcycling

I think I have the best of all worlds. I have a GS for Adventure Riding, a Concours for those sporty times, and a Trike for when I just feel like smelling the roses.

I converted my Goldwing some time back when I wanted the wife to ride with me more than she did. I thought the trike would do the trick. Well, things don't always turn out as you plan, and my wife just does not share my enthusiasm for motorcycling.

Finally got the wife to admit she doesn't care for riding, so we struck up a deal, I take her on regular trips in the car, and I do my other trips on the bikes.

After I found out she really doesn't want to ride, I was going to sell the trike. The problem was, the more I rode it the better I liked it. I don't want to ride three wheels exclusively, but it is a change of pace, and to me triking in itself is fun.

I would still probably sell the trike if someone comes up and offers me enough money for it, but I just can't bring myself to list it.

As for those that think trikes are unsafe. All I can say is you need to ride one before you make your decision. With the right rider, not me, they can hang with most bikes in the curves. It is amazing how well they handle, but you do loose some Horse Power when you lay that third wheel on the ground.

Don't think anybody mentioned unsafe for cruising. But if you tried to take curves at the same speed possible on a bike then yes it could become unsafe. Of course you wouldn't do that knowing your trike's limitations. Even before you triked your Wing it wouldn't take curves as fast as your Connie or BMW can either. Just depends on how you drive and intended use.

I think trikes can be cool but not for me and definitely doesn't replace a bike.

As light as those Chinese scooters are, You should be good until your 90 being on 2 wheels. You wouldn't even have to kick start them. I have no idea what I will do until I have to make that decision. I might just park my bike in the living room and sit on it while I listen to Steppenwolf playing Born to be wild and watching Hill Country reporter on the tube.

For my I see a DS bike and a Super Moto as my last resort bikes when that day comes.

I started motorcycling life on um, I'll finish on um as well.

Re: Aging and motorcycling

I'm only 50 and this tread is already depressing me. I believe that motorcycling is done on two wheels not three. Makes no difference to me if the extra wheel is in front or back it's not motorcycling to me. It may be fun but I hope when the day comes that I Cann't ride two wheels it will be the day after they bury me.

Unless something like this is available in the states...

I won't consider a trike

That was what I found out from the trikes I tried out a few years ago. They don't seem to take as much thought to cover as many miles.

The point I was trying to make is that until we try something we really do not know if it will for fill our wants and needs.

The new way of thinking I was talking about is the above point plus the fact that just because you are right does not mean I am wrong.
