Re: It finally happened...
I revisited this thread to mention loud horns save lives but several folks have beat me to it.
With your years and miles without a crash you have to be doing something right, so don't be too hard on yourself. Your photoshop skills are fine. From what you've described and drawn two vehicles and 5 lanes with no traffic should not have been a problem. Sounds as if, like many of us, you've made such a habit of cheating traffic by using the center turn lane for acceleration you headed there without even thinking about it even when there was no traffic. are you one of those who pulls halfway across when 2 lanes are clear to wait for traffic from the right, which in a cage often means blocking a lane or two of traffic? Maybe unlearning unproper use of the turn lane, trying to develop an alternative means to turn left across traffic (turn right, then left, then go around a block) or simply trying to be more patient would help.

Re: It finally happened...
Glad you're okay. Vehicles entering traffic are one of the biggest hazard...to themselves and others. It is common for drivers to not look where they are headed when entering traffic. Again, glad you're okay.
+ another for loud horns. I ride and drive with my thumb on the edge of the horn button. The horn has been deployed many many times with aplomb.

Re: It finally happened...
Glad you made it through this one.
That's a hazard rich riding environment to say the least. Ride there long enough and the odds are sure to catch up with even the best riders...even you. I assume anything that can go wrong, will. I'm constantly looking/planning evasion and escape. There are so many moving pieces where you had this episode that I can only imagine trying to deal with it on a bike. Overwhelming for country rub like me. Learn from it. Use it to be better. Move on. |

Re: It finally happened...
Glad you made it... What happened to you is a classic hazard of the continuous left turn lane. Here in Tyler on the loop and along S. Broadway, txdot built medians with left turn cut outs for each direction. Now, it is a bit safer, but now we have become the Uturn capital of Texas. It's funny to sit at a light and watch cars make Uturns.

Re: It finally happened...
I really don't know. She got out, maybe blonde hair?/raspberry top? I suppose I was just focused on not getting hit while standing in the center lane too much to really look. Mark or Ken could probably answer that one.

Re: It finally happened...
Scott's description was close enough to not be disputed; what I remember MOST about here was that she was heavy............
enough to stomp on that big SUV's brake pedal and NOT hit my friend!

Re: It finally happened...
Glad you're okay Scott. Looks to me like an unusual set of circumstances conspired to bite you. Good that you shared this so we all can learn from it.
