Custom Plates...

...for the wealthy.

Went to the website

http://www.myplates.com/

and found that I could order GZNRGE for my Moto Guzzi.

Only $195 dollars a year for the very attractive "Texas Natural" plates.

There was a $495 bargain if you signed up for 5 years.

I like to support the park system, I buy a Passport every year.

Can't afford those plates.

Re: Custom Plates...

There are ways to reduce the cost if you're creative. I have "ZRX 05" on the ZRX. By combining 3 letters and two numbers you can get the plates for less, but yes - it's still expensive. On the ZRX it really made the back of the bike look great, so it was worth it to me. I've wanted a set for the Corvette as well, but it gets driven even less than the ZRX gets rode!

Re: Custom Plates...

CA puts it to us on yearly tags-way more than a comparable cage. I refuse to pay even more for special plates.

Re: Custom Plates...

I had not seen the black Texas plate until I was in Denver for the IBA meet.

As per my avatar, my TX T plate costs me $25 a year extra.

I was just denied an IBAAZ (Iron Butt Assoc - Arizona) tag for my Connie (we're only allowed 5 characters on a moto plate) so I have an appeal letter going out to them in the morning. My guess is that whoever reviewed the application probably thought I was trying to say that I was a Bad A Z Z or something along those lines.

Re: Custom Plates...

I think they've recently gone up on these. I pay about $48 more per year for the vanity plate on my Duc. It is on the standard TX background, though. I was going to get one for the 14R but am not going to pay what they want for them now.

Re: Custom Plates...

IIRC, when you go through TxDOT the cost is as mentioned $48 for the standard Texas background vanity plate. These guys (MyPlates) are a separate company working under an agreement with TxDOT and you can also get the seven digit combinations from them. Not sure if TxDOT is releasing seven's yet.

As an aside, in 1977 the fee for a vanity plate was $10. Over the years it went up to $25, then $40, $50 and with the budget woes of the early 90's it was crowding $100. They figured if x people are buying them at $50, we can double our revenue if we double the cost. They lost money on the program one year and dropped it back down considerably. Yeah, I ponied up for my plate since I had had it for so long even then. I'm now crowding 35 years with the same plate. And one of the best moves was to incorporate the vanity plate fee in with the County fee so you take care of it all at one time.

Re: Custom Plates...

I've had vanity plates in TX before (on cages) and I think the most I paid was $60/year. They're too expensive now so I'll stay with the standard issue. They are very creative with the plate designs on Myplates, I'll give them that. Mighty Fine and Dr Pepper plates?

Re: Custom Plates...

Back when I had a vanity plate on my R6 it cost an extra $40 per year. That plate now resides on the wall of my garage. Glad I took it off before the bike got stolen.

Re: Custom Plates...

About the only non-standard plate that I'd pay $50/yr for would be the Native Texan plates.
It's extra fee is more palatable to me cause $30+ of the funds go to the Daughters Of The Republic who maintain the Alamo and other historic sites around the state.

I have amateur radio plates on my bikes and cage. $1/yr more.
