Re: Someone keeps knocking my bike over...

I would never advise flipping a turd's car over, but I've had to right some overturned trucks before. The trick is to put the tow strap over the top (or bottom in my case) around the side and anchor it on the bottom and then jerk it from a 90 degree angle to get that good flipping action (you know, back onto the wheels.)

If you read the original post, the scratches were on the right side. Don't know of any bike that puts a side stand on that side.

Re: Someone keeps knocking my bike over...

Are you sure your bikes not just tired?

I used to ride and park at work everyday in an area that seemed to invite curious monkeys to sit on and mess with my bike. I installed an alarm system with a perimeter sensor and paged alerts. I had a blast a couple of times setting off the alarm remotely and watching the culprits jump and run away.

Re: Someone keeps knocking my bike over...

Thanks for all the responses, whether helpful or just amusing...

I will look into the motion cameras, although I am a broke/cheap ***** and also kinda agree that it wouldn't do me much good in the end.

It has happened late on Saturday nights so far, which leads me to believe it is maybe done by someone who comes to visit a resident on the weekend. Overall, it is a quiet complex, people don't hang out outside a lot. There are a few kids but they don't roam around at night much that I have seen. I've talked to a couple neighbors, they havent seen anything yet but will keep an eye out for me.

The first time I found my bike "taking a nap", it was in the parking space directly at the bottom of some stairs. I figured that maybe that spot was inviting trouble, being right where people will be walking by. So after that incident, I started parking a couple spaces over and it happened again. This is on solid pavement, slightly sloping backward and I always park the bike so that it leans with its weight into the slope to make accidental tip-overs less likely. It is being pushed away from the kickstand. Always in first gear. I also do not have any psycho ex-gfs or any enemies that I know of...

My alarmed disc lock gives me no troubles, works like a champ, and doesn't go off when it's not supposed to. Xena.

Re: Someone keeps knocking my bike over...

I'd try a cover. You can get them fairly cheap at Walmart.

This reminds me of the stop sign across from our house when I was a teenager. It was a little loose in its hole, and it had a wooden post. Somebody was coming by at night and lifting it out of the hole and leaving it on the ground. So dad went over with some thick axle grease a put some stripes on the post. Next morning it was partially out of the hole and the grease was smeared. Somebody went home with clothes and hands covered. Never happened again.

Do you know which one it is. It could be the model that is the problem.

Re: Someone keeps knocking my bike over...

Mewonders if something more sinister is going on here.
Is a bike thief testing the waters? checking for an alarm (audible or silent) by moving the bike?
If no additional countermeasures are taken, you might come out one morning and find an empty parking spot.

Remember, apartment complexes are just candy stores for bike thieves.

Re: Someone keeps knocking my bike over...

If someone's intentionally targeting the bike for theft, the first tip-over would have been the alarm test. The second would have been a call about a stolen bike. A 'real' thief isn't going to test the waters twice.

If someone's targeting the bike just to be a jackwagon, a cover isn't going to prevent them from tipping it over and an alarm will just increase the giggle factor when they kick it over.

Personally, I think it's just someone being a jerk because 1) they're jealous or 2) they perceive some sort of slight by the owner or 3) they're just genuine jackwagons.

I'd go covert on Saturdays and catch them red-handed. But that's just me. I once camped out on my front porch 3 nights in a row to catch a turd throwing rocks and firecrackers at my front window. It did not end well for him. Handcuffs tighten the more you struggle.

Shipman, have talked to the property manager? Express your concerns about the vandalism. Depending on the manager and how you approach them, sometimes they will work with you. Ask if a simple hand out can be done asking parents to watch their kids as some vandalisms have occurred in the parking lot. Let them know if it doesn't stop you will be forced to file a police report. Properties hate this because in some areas the city monitors that. Plus if enough reports are filed in an area, property values drop, then so will their rent they can charge.

Of course if they won't work with you, a few of us can take shifts to pick up the punks (with photos of course, love the game camera idea) and bring them back to their mommies and let them know if it happens again, charges will be pressed.
