Austin to Big Bend: Nov 20 - 21, 2012

I'm planning a 2 day ride from Austin to Terlingua over the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and am extending an invitation for you to join me.

My plan is for us to leave Buda on Tuesday afternoon about 12:30 pm and ride cross country via wonderful hill country twisty back roads to Del Rio. The route I have planned is 260 miles, all pavement, and will take about 6 hours. We will overnight at a local motel in Del Rio on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday we will take Hwy 90 west to Marathon and then head south into Big Bend National Park on Hwy 385. Depending on the group we will either a) take the dirt route by riding Old Marathon Road west to Hwy 118 and then ride south to Terlingua or b) stick to the pavement by taking Hwy 385 to Hwy 118 and on to Terlingua. We should arrive in Terlingua by mid-afternoon on Wednesday.

What I mean by "depending on the group" is that if the group consists of all dual sport riders who want to ride some dirt then we will likely take the dirt route. If the group has some street only riders then we will ride pavement only (or split the group).

Does this sound like fun to you? If you have been wanting to ride to Big Bend or ride there again this could be the opportunity you've been waiting on.

Note that after I arrive in Terlingua my riding is done. My wife is driving out to join me so I will be parking the bike for some quality family vacation stuff.


If you are going to be in Big Bend over Thanksgiving and are willing to haul my bike back to Austin please let me know. I'm looking for someone with trailer space or pickup bed space to haul my bike back to Austin. Of course I will contribute to your gas fund or whatever else you need in the way of compensation.

It sounds like a fun trip. I am planning on going out there for the February Sport-Touring rally in Ft. Davis. However, I cannot get enough of BB during this time of year now that we finally have cool weather, so this is tempting!

I may be able to go but need to check with my better half to see if I can peel away during the Thanksgiving time-frame.
