Re: Riding in the rain....

Watch his head... It's all about the eyes. I need to show this video to Sarah and Daniel. I set up cones in the back yard for them to navigate on their dirt bikes in an effort to try to teach them about the importance of looking where you want to go. Nothing quite this extreme of course... That would be a hard course on dry pavement, that he is doing that in standing water is VERY impressive!

Very impressive indeed but of course note it is on a closed course. If he was trying it on the street he would be on his back at almost every turn. It is not the rain or water to be worried about, it is the dirt, chemicals and oils that rise to the surface that bite you and slam you down. I'd rather ride in flooding conditions with the pavement well washed than in a light rain.

+1 that first 15 - 30 minutes of rain is a little sketchy. And like you said even worse for a light rain

Without a doubt public roads are FAR more dangerous in terms of traction when wet than a clean closed course. However, I have found that for many riders, a BIG factor of riding in wet conditions is mental issues. You even see this in professional racers. One guy has no issues and he rips away from the pack, showing that there is clearly more traction than the rest of the guys are willing to believe. So the rest of the group lags behind because they just can't get their heads around the available traction. The guy in this video obviously has no such mental limitations with regard to the available traction. THAT is impressive

Look at the spectators around 1:15 and 1:55. Most are not looking at the bike in the video so I must conclude that he's not necessarily the most impressive rider on the course. More skill and more confidence than I'll ever have.

WSB Monza this year. IIRC, wasn't everyone wanting to have the race called and Sykes was itching to get started. Flag dropped and everyone tippy toed it around the track while Sykes tore it up showing everyone what could be done in the rain.

OR....his skill was boring to watch while some other rider slid off the course on his bum. Nothing attracts a crowd quite like a crash.

Just goes to show, it's not about how much traction there is but how you deal with the lack of traction.

He almost looks like he's motocrossing his way around the track. That rear tire wasn't hooked up through a single turn.

Re: Riding in the rain....

I've heard it said (though have no reference) that most tires have ~80-90% of their grip when wet. (assuming clean, oil-free, of course)
I know I don't ride to the 80% mark of my tires even when dry, but, my brain won't let me push anywhere near as hard when wet as I do when dry.

Like Scott said, it's the squishy bits of the bike, wrapped in gear, that is the biggest limitation

That said, I don't trust cagers to dial back their aggression when it's wet, and that's a bigger fear than the road conditions.

Re: Riding in the rain....

You needn't feel like a Noob. Riding on a scrubbed skidpad on scrubbed-in raingroove tires by an expert level rider who's crashed countless times practicing this show, is nowhere near riding on oil-slick pavement on half-worn street tires, on a fully loaded adventure bike with the appropriate suspension,...and especially when you've probably only encounted it a small handfull of times.

These videos are entertaining to watch, but nowhere near reality. Thanks for the link...

Yea, one of the cops somewhere commented on the demonstrations of the slow maneuvering police bikes through the cones, that you have no idea how many times those cops dropped the much smaller practice bikes and their full size bikes to get that good.
