Heh! LOL At first I read your post and thought, "Pffft... of course I tried putting it in neutral!" Then I thought... "Ummmm, uh... no, actually... I didn't try that."

Ran out to the garage. Put it in neutral, turned the key.. and then I heard the fuel pump prime, and start right up.

SUCH a relief!

I was in a panic because I'm getting ready to take a longer trip that I really shouldn't because I'm worried about the economy and spending money when I don't know if I'll make it back. A $500 repair would've likely meant I put the trip on the back burner instead.

I felt so bad for wasting people's time with a non-problem. But, it was REALLY great to see how many like yourself were willing to help me!

Lot's of help on vstrom.info and stromtrooper as well. Not so much on ADV, but I've never had much luck there anyway after my KLR debacle when I had the nerve to challenge the fact they wouldn't honor my warranty claim. But, I digress.

Thanks again everyone.

Are there any street bikes made in the last 20 years that allow you to start the engine with the sidestand down? I've had Ducati, Kawasaki, Triumph, BMW, Yamaha, Honda and a few others. All of them had sidestand switches.

Glad you got the problem resolved and a very reasonable cost Skiphunt.

I am able to start my roadbike with the side stand down but only in neutral.

My dirt bike I can start in gear....but then it has no stand at all.

My Harley has a sidestand swith that won't let it start in gear. I start it all the time in neutral while on the side stand and let it warm up while gearing up first thing in the morning. It won't start if it's in gear unless you pull the clutch in first. On the old Intruder I had to pull the clutch even when in neutral.

I'd be VERY interested in what years/part numbers.

I read one blog with a guy riding RTW on his Wee. His pump went out in BFE so they adapted an EXTERNAL pump from IIRC, an Audi. I think the pump ended up costing like $25 or so, plus the shipping to BFE of course. And everyone knows shipping to BFE has GOT to be expensive.

Re: 2005 V-strom 650 won't start

I have heard the same thing about using an Audi fuel pump. It is slightly more complicated than the gixxer one, but it can be one if you have to.

I found my old posts on the Strom site. The pumps at the time that were swappable with the Strom were the 2006 GSXR600 and 750 fuel pumps. I'm sure that there are other ones out there, but those are the ones that were the hot candidates back then. I can promise you that the 750 one fits because that is what has been on my Strom for the past 40k miles and it's still going strong.

Thanks everyone! I'll go crawl away in shame now.
Haha, perfect. This is exactly like something I would do.

Fairly sure I've done this. Only difference is I didn't post before figuring it out. But there's always next time...

reminds me of:

"well, this place is just a geographical oddity.. it's two weeks from ANYWHERE"

I'm interested in the GSXR part numbers as well...... just in case.
