Dungey to KTM for 2012

Saw a post saying Ryan Dungey is going to KTM for the 2012 season.
I think this is awesome, I've been wondering how KTM would do with one of the top riders riding orange. Maybe we'll see some orange on the podium sooner than later

After watching a few episode of The Moto, I started becoming a Dungey fan. Hope he does well.

Wow, that would be quite the push that KTM has been looking for.

Re: Dungey to KTM for 2012

Saw this news the other day. Not such a shocker since DeCoster is team manager at KTM and he was really big on Ryan when RD ran Suzuki's program. Will be interesting to see if he runs the 350 in SX next season.

Re: Dungey to KTM for 2012

I wonder if Dungey wins a lot on a KTM if all the haters [read: people who only think a good dirt bike comes from Japan] will quiet down, and/or see a lot of KTM band-wagoners?
More KTM sales would be good as it may help bring prices down a little, at the very least there'd be more in the used market.

I like KTM but the changing brands didn't do Andrew Short any good. I hope Ryan doesn't suffer the same fate.

That's what I was thinking. Short and Alessi consistently ran in the top 5 on competitive equipment. Maybe their recent less impressive performances has more to do w/ the bike than the rider.

I don't follow Poser's economic model. Increased demand = reduced prices? I agree that there would be more for the used market. Seems like there's already more used KTMs for sale on Texas Offroad Network than any single Jap brand. BTW, I'm not a hater. I rode a buddy's new KTM XC250 and liked it almost as much as my 2005 YZ250.

Re: Dungey to KTM for 2012

I was thinking from a volume stand point. If they up they're production don't they get a little cheaper to produce?

And Alessi one a moto or two on the 350 didn't he?
They both seem to be dealing with personal stuff this year, and Short was right up there in the SX season. He's a podium rider when there's less than three of the current superstars riding.

I am pretty sure Alessi hasn't one a MOTO yet. He has podiumed, but not gotten the top spot. He's had a holeshot a few times, and led a few laps. But, the "boys" always seem to reel him in. Dungey would probably be able to keep that lead on the KTM. Should be interesting.

Re: Dungey to KTM for 2012

Last year, Allessi won the opening moto of the year on a 350...the rest of his season was disappointing. This year, he seems to be doing better on the 450. Short's performance seems poor for him this year, but I can't attribute it solely to the bike. For both of these guys, they are not only dealing with Dungey running away from everybody now that Reed and Villopoto are in it for the full season so far. I think the perception of performance from these two is worse than the actuality.

As for Dungey, this has been floating around a while....rumor has it that he has stated he will not ride the 350 if he goes to KTM. I hope he does go to team pumpkin, I'd like to see them in the mix for wins in the big boy class on this side of the pond. On the subject of the 350, anyone care to tell me what bike dominated the FIM MXGP MX1 championship last year with Antonio Cairolli on it? Hint, it's the same one on which he has a significant points lead this year.

There is so much bias against the orange machine in AMA SX and MX, but the fact is that KTM has never paid for a top rider that was in their prime to contest those racing series here in the states. As much as I like Short, he's never been a real consistent front runner.....Alessi hasn't been either since getting run over by half the field at Red Bud in 2008.

Now I wouldn't say that. Almost every race where the KTM's at or near the front, I hear nothing but praise about them, and even when they aren't up front I don't really hear anyone bashing either the bikes or the riders. I do think that until this year KTM hasn't had a factory bike that could really compete with the Japanese factory bikes. I'm not talking about stock versus stock since we all know that KTM makes a pretty stout motorbike. I just think it's taken awhile for team Pumpkin to get up to snuff with their factory program.

Maybe that was their plan all along to not hire a top tier rider until they honestly felt their program could not just compete but win? I know that if they hired a Dungey and he promptly went out to lose everything I sure as heck would think it was the bike that did it to him. Not so with Short and Allessi, since they weren't superstars when coming to KTM so if they didn't win, it wasn't as big of a blow. Anywho, what the heck do I know, I'm just guessing at most of this anyway..

I will be darn glad to see Dungey on an orange bike just because I'd like to see some more brand diversity in the sport.

Re: Dungey to KTM for 2012

I think short has been dealing with some stuff off the track as well. I remember them saying one of his kids was in the hospital for one of the races, and at the last minute decided to go ahead and race. Kinda hard to focus when your kids are sick.

And yeah, there's a lot anti-orange bias out there.

The bias I was referring to is the crap displayed on most of the MX forums out there by "fans" of the sport.

Yeah, that's what I was refering too also.
For example, I follow rockmountainatvmc.com on facebook, which is where I heard about Dungey. The majority of the comments were hate'n on KTMs. Things like KTMs are junk, he's ruining his career, etc...

My bad... I don't really visit many mx forums, so all I was basing it on was the TV coverage.

yeah the dudes on TV never bag on KTM, if anything they talk about how cool it is a 350 is keeping up with the 450s.

Re: Dungey to KTM for 2012

BTW, the photo is of Ryan's little brother Blake Dungey.

Things that make Ryan Dungey going to KTM seem plausible are as follows.

Younger brother Blake races KTMs.
Older brother Jade is Mike Brown's mechanic for KTM's endurocross/off-road efforts.
Roger Decoster and Ryan Dungey had a strong working relationship and reportedly are still pretty chummy in the pits.

It's officially official, Ryan has joined his brothers and rejoined Decoster in the orange factory hauler.
