Florence Az Coke Ovens

Ever since the thread on the Florence, Az coke ovens I've been thinking about going there. At this point I'm wondering if a spring DS ride that stops in Big Bend, Florence, then returns via Cloudcroft would be worthwhile putting together. Sounds like a long way to drag a trailer.

Re: Florence Az Coke Ovens

I am planning on hitting the coke ovens around Thanksgiving time this year. I tried it last year but it didn't work out. If it falls through again, I may be in. At least for the coke oven part.

If you make it this Thanksgiving write up a ride report.

Hi Meriden, I would love to join a spring DS ride to AZ!! Running out of vacation for this year, but next year is definitely a good year for DS for me..

Will do. I will be based out of Casa Grande. Probably do 3 rides......Sycamore, Payson, and the coke ovens.

EDIT: Looks like my wife can't get off for TG so it may get canned again for this year unless we go out there for Christmas.

Re: Florence Az Coke Ovens

Just have to say I'm impressed. I did a bunch of jeep trails at 4 Peaks in Tonto Natl Forrest, AZ, but everyone that went to the Coke Ovens in Florence came back with horror stories. It was always the myth none of my buddies were willing to try. We also did the Mercury Mine at Sunshine, AZ, which was easy peasy and got you up to a nice high elevation.
I HIGHLY recommend the A+ hiking trail off dirt road #60 that starts near Pumkin Center on the North Side of 4 Peaks. 45 min hike down to a canyon with a creek in the bottom and swimming holes waist deep. Pretty clear water. There's a lot of jeep trails back there, but I never learned which ones were public.

Have a great trip,

You taking Jeep and trailering? I would like to go there but I am not riding my ATK that far I am curious of the southern route. I was in Arizona back in June but went up the Coronado Parkway.

Plan on just taking the truck and putting the bikes in the bed to save gas. Going from Dec 23-30 or so.

Re: Florence Az Coke Ovens

AZ is a long way from here. I will be attending a ride near Truth or Consequences (TorC), NM in November and I will most likely be re-creating the ride in March or April of 2012. There are many areas there, from 4000 feet, the Rio Grande river basin, to 10,000 at the top of Mt Withington near Magdalena, and it's a 12 hour drive from Austin.

Re: Florence Az Coke Ovens

Just saw this thread, must have been another one earlier.

I rode a BMW R100 GSPD to the coke ovens from two different routes back in 2000 or so. Toughest route came in from the highway (177) between Superior and Kearney. Shortest, but steep, not so rocky, was from north of Florence. Lots of fun DS roads in that area between Florence and Superior.

Anyone ever see U Turn? Filmed in and and around Superior.
