Bus to Florida Africa Twin back to Texas

I bought an AT because I wanted one. No other reason. It is a good looking bike and the initial reviews did not expose any
major flaws.

So almost a year after they arrived stateside I found the one I wanted at a
dealership 4 states over.

I had the factory center stand and 12 volt accessory outlet installed by the dealer.

After a lengthy bus trip to the dealer I had to repack my gear to get it to
fit in a large bag that I secured to the back on the bike for the 3 day trip home.

First leg… dealership to the motel.

A squall of high winds and rain had welcomed me to the local bus terminal
and it was apparent that my first ride on the AT was going to be a wet one.

While at the dealership however, the storms dissipated and although
there was a light rain, it was nothing like the downpour earlier and I
made it to the motel without issue.

First thing I noticed was how sensitive the throttle was and was glad the
bike had traction control. My ZRX1100 had a twitchy throttle but it’s
been years since I sold that one. It’s just something I have to get
used to all over again.

The second thing I noticed was how easily the engine lugged and silly
me thought it was just the high gearing.

Day 1
I got started early but eventually get caught up in the central Florida
corridor traffic along Hwy 27.

Right away I noticed how smooth the bike shifted. The controls worked
well, the clutch was smooth. About an hour into the ride I noticed I
was hunting for a comfortable spot on the seat. This would be a
reoccurring issue.

North of Ocala I finally got to open up the bike a bit and could tell
there would be plenty of power if I needed it.

After 384 miles for the day I made it to the motel in Panama City.

Day 2

Once again I got an early start. My plan was to hug the coastline all
the way to Mobile thus taking the scenic route. The route was far from
my idea of the definition of scenic with only a few spots where you
could actually see anything. With speed varying from 25 to 35 to 45
and back again it is NOT a route to take if you are trying to make miles

Although there were a few cutbacks to the main highway, I endured
scenic route all the way to the end.

Once I cleared Mobile and got to the Mississippi state line things opened
up a bit and I could run the bike through its rpm range now that I was
out of that 600 mile break in window.

The lugging that I experienced earlier was gone but I realized 6th gear
is almost an overdrive. 60mph in 6th gear roll-ons are less than
impressive but 70 mph in 6th gear roll-ons however are quite enjoyable.

341 miles for the day plus a couple of side trips.

Day 3

Early start and my plan was to burn though Mississippi and Louisiana
and get to Texas as soon as I could. The forecast was for hot and
humid conditions the entire way and I need to get as many miles
under my belt before the heat got too oppressive.

I stopped for a break at Toledo Bend the lake which forms the state
line between Louisiana and Texas to put on my cooling vest which I
had packed at the last minute. I would need 3 more stops to rehydrate
the vest before I made it home.

Long day 485 miles.

Once I got to the house I softened up the suspension a bit and it
works better for me now. Plus I’m not carrying 35-40lbs of gear on
the passenger seat either.

Overview,

On my first ride after getting home I decided to do a flogging MPG run
to see how the mileage was going to be. Jack rabbit starts and stops,
with WFO runs up to the speed limit of course and I returned 50mpg
over 140 miles. Not bad considering and if I were touring or cruising depending upon load and speed I would expect near that and that
fine with me.

The AT engine is smooth beyond any measure that I was expecting.
At 70mph in 6th and 80mph in 6th it just slightly hums along. No buzzing
in the pegs or the bars. Speedo is 3mph over at 80 according to my GPS.

For me, the seat was not as good as the reviews claimed and the
stock windscreen did not work very well for my 5’ 10” frame donning
a street helmet.

The display was bright and I never had any trouble reading it no
matter how bright the sun was.

The peg clearance on the RH side of the bike is something that
I’m going to have to deal with until I can swing a peg mod of some sort.

Nice, fly, erm, bus n rides rock. No they don't. How you didn't kill yourself during the bus ride is beyond me. I did one across Florida and it was miserable. The ride back for you must have been SO much better.

Nice ride, I didn't even know that color scheme was available. Very nice, classy and subdued.

Where'd you buy it? You say Central Florida so I presume somewhere around Orlando.

As far as scenic routes, yea, unless you enjoy looking at kudzu or mangroves, there's not much scenery there. Those routes are good to keep the speeds down, and you do want to do that as my previous roommate had the tickets to prove it.

How you didn't kill yourself during the bus ride is beyond me.

I consider it my penance for buying a bike I really did not need.

As far as scenic routes, yea, there's not much scenery there.

I mean the first 1/2 mile of the backs of condos, ginormous beach houses, and
Berkshire-Hathaaway real estate development signs was okay but 18 more miles
of that was just overkill.

What a trip. Nice looking AT. I'm looking around for one myself to replace the Versys 1000.
Interested to see what type of luggage racks are available for it...
 
Congrats on the new AT. I made 2 trips to Florida this spring, and had to hustle along on both. I hope to take the scenic drive along the coast one of these days. My friends in Florida have been desperate for rain; if being there on two wheels helped bring it, take a bow.

Check out the Givi Outbacks with the PLRcam racks. Very solid. I can have the racks on or off in 5 minutes. It's nice not to have them on all the time. I had some fitment issues with the brackets for the tail section but 20 minutes with a big hammer fixed that.

I contacted Givi but they blew me off. Other than that I have to say the best system I've had, probably the best I've see.

OK, I can't help but ask... How long was the bus ride there?
 
I'm not sure I could handle that long on a buss.. I can barely make it three hours on a plane to Canada, lol
 
Wonder if SW-MOTECH has a snap on ring tank bag for the AT. I love the two I have and they won't scratch the tank on your new bike,
I would have had to take a Airhawk on that bus trip. :lol2:

I would have had to take a handful of sleeping pills and someone to wake me up when it was time to get off the bus.
 
Oh wow. That's definitely no express. I often wondered if they have an express like they do to the West coast. Well, glad you made it back safe and sound and with your new steed.
 
You can jump on an Amtrak at Union Station in Los Angeles and take it all the way to New Orleans without even leaving your seat. I did a fly and ride using Amtrak, 25 hrs from Tucson to Houston (approx 8-9 short stops but no transfers) for $104. Food on the dining car was surprising good and reasonably priced. Seats, leg room and overhead space was comparable if not better than first class on an airplane. Clientele is excellent, not like you find on buses. Many I believe just afraid of flying. I did it for cost savings since my kid was paying and for the experience.

Things must have changed since 1992. I think I paid like $15 for a soggy turkey sandwich and a bag of chips.

$12 for a side salad, sourdough bread, huge plate of red beans and rice with andouille sausage. Almost more than I could eat and I have a big appetite.

The food service brought to your seat was Chicken breast sandwich, chips and a drink for $9. Didn't try that as I packed plenty of food for all my other meals.

I've always wanted to take one of those cross country trips on train that goes across the northern US. Maybe start in Cali, go up along the Seaboard and then come across all the snowy passes. Would probably be a lot safer than trying to drive it and you never have to really get off the train from what I understand.
 
Yeah, I was also pretty disappointed with the scenery in florida. Rode to Daytona for bike week, and made an effort (initially) to take some of the roads that hug the coast. You hit it right on- 1)you might be near the water, but there's nothing to see and 2)straight, flat, slow roads. Oh look, another condo complex.

Pretty quickly bailed back to the highway and entertained ourselves with seeing how fast we could empty our gas tanks. I doubt Butler will be making a "florida panhandle" map anytime soon.

That's hilarious. Though you could have left off the "panhandle" part. :giveup:

Side note, my neighbor and his family are currently enroute from Austin to California via train. I'll be interested to hear his experiences.
