Re: Iron Butt Riders

If you are considering becoming part of this crazy brigade called LD Riders, perhaps you should read some real life exploits by one of the best known LD Riders in this country... John Ryan. Hard core does not begin to describe him.

Re: Iron Butt Riders

Playing with maps while listening to Little Feat's "Willing" and out popped what Google claims is a 1,597 mile run starting in Amarillo and visiting Tucumcari, Tucson, Tehachapi and Tonopah.

Absolutely no intention of pursuing this route but, hey, if you're living up in the panhandle and want to head West one morning...

Re: Iron Butt Riders

I know it can never be certified, but the ET450 one day ride on mostly twisty dirt roads on a dirt bike has to be as at least as hard as 1000 miles on a highway on any bike. Freaking brutal.

I love it.

Re: Iron Butt Riders

Finally did one of the TX rides. I never thought I would be interested but a charity would benefit from fees so I thought go ahead because I did not have to finish if it was too much. On the ST then so I did my own fuel stops rather than the suggested ones ( great range on the ST). I had a medical issue that was an issue but I made it. If this Wing doesn't sell I may do another.

Advice would be to remember it is not a race. It's more like a road rally. Quite a few riders in my group made it a race. There's plenty of time unless one breaks down. It's more about planning and endurance. Heck make it fun. I participated in the FM game on the ride and did other side trips. I had three hours left when I finished, and they had still not heard from 8 others out of the 100+ starting group.

There's also the twisty butt ride, that isn't associated with the iron butt riders, but is a heck of a way to spend 500 miles on paved roads.

Re: Iron Butt Riders

One and only one, rode to Albuquerque NM for a bowling tournament. Yep, bowling ball in left side pan. Spent 2 days getting there, stopping off at an old Navy buddies place for the night. Return trip was planned as SS1000. Left Albuquerque about 0500, down to El Paso, Texas, Fort Stockton, San Antonio and finally into NE Houston (Humble). 1043 official miles. Took me just over 15 hours to complete it. Having over 7 gallons available per tank made it possible to do it with only 3 actual stops for fuel plus top offs at start and finish. Endured over 8 hours with temps over 100 degrees with high hitting 118 measured on dash at speed. Stopped for a dip in a creek once, fully geared up, just to get wet. That really helped. IBA#34886

I don't think I took any photos of them, but there were several bikes in the parking lot during the Denver IBA meet that had IT'S ONLY A GAME vinyl stickers on the inside of their windshields. While this applies more to the rally riders than to the certificate chasers, it's good to be reminded of it when you're tired, the conditions are crappy, and you still have another 257 miles to go.

You can always chase the certificate another day if TODAY is not to be.

Ooops. Spoke too soon. Here's a photo of one...

Contemplating one of my own some time after the first of the year. I finally have a bike I'd be comfortable doing one on so..............

Re: Iron Butt Riders

The only time I've done over a thousand in a day was a spur of the moment decision, or a chain of them. I was at Americade West in Colorado and had tired of all the bikes clogging up the roads. Decided to go see my folks in Schulenburg, Texas and rode through Kansas and Oklahoma stopping in the night to lay in the grass a couple of times for short naps. An Aerostich and helmet make a pretty good tent.

1187 miles later, with only 1 speeding ticket, I reached my destination.

Because of my lack of planning I was hallucinating the last hour or so due to fatigue and lack of adequate sleep.

Looking back I can see how it would have been much easier had I made a plan beforehand. 20/20 hindsight.

Have made some long day rides since, including the ET450 with RollingJ, but haven't felt any need nor desire to do another solo marathon like that trip to see the folks.

I applaud those who routinely enjoy this sort of thing. Kudos!

Yeah, that's the one that brought me to this thread but I'm looking at going the opposite direction. I was thinking Austin to Van Horn and back or Austin to Tucson and back for a BB1500.

You're talking a regular BB1500, correct? Not the BBG? The only reason I ask is that the IBA will not certify a BBG or similar extreme ride until you have done a regular certified ride such as the SS1K or BB1500.

Of the three different rides I felt the BB1500 was the easiest. I rode from here to a little motel on the SW Kansas border (it was literally 100 yards from the state line), slept for about six hours, and then rode back home.

Oh yeah, regular BB1500. I was going to take the easy route. Ride out to Tucson, take a long nap and ride back. I might do the SS1K first just to be sure my buns (and wrists) can handle that first.

Re: Iron Butt Riders

I completed my first SS1000 a couple of weeks ago, November 17. I was a "spur of the moment" thing as I figured it would be. The weather was just too good to pass up. I went from Houston wet to Fort Stockton then up to Pecos and back by the same route. Distance was 1,091 miles in 18 hrs 30 min. It opens a whole new perspective on touring.

There's a guy on the FJRForum who just completed his 15th cert ride of the year. He decided to finish off the year with an SS1000 on his BMW S1000RR.

His annual miles this year was 53,643 miles!

Not for me, no thanks!

I'm envious of the TIME required to put that many miles in.

Stupid work. They have this crazy thing about me actually being here to get paid. Yes, I know, they're crazy
