2015 Uncle's Around the Bend, Desert, ADV, and Dos y Dos Challenges Mar 19 - 22 2015

Last Saturday Oldtimer on his XT and me on the TW, joined by GoSeeDo, took a trial run to test new tires, bars and such on our bikes, as well as fuel range. My TW ran 88 miles to reserve, then 22 miles to the gas station without going dry - with maybe 2 miles left in the tank. With only a 1/2 gallon spare tank, I will have to plan carefully.

The bikes are almost ready to Dos y Dos :pirate: now me, on the hand

We did stumble upon a good lunch at No Teeth BBQ in Holly, Louisiana:

Good to see you today, Lee! I see Q and I have had a good influence on you :-D

I hope we will be joining in on the Dos y Dos fun. It's on the wish list - now I just need to make it on the confirmed list!

A few of us from my area are going to make this one.

I may have missed them posted but are any GPX files available for the routes we can download?

Combo - I think I saw somewhere it stated tracks would be emailed once you're registered.

Are you guys riding from Santa Fe? I will be leaving the Thursday morning from Sugar Land and heading back Sunday morning.

I am not a GPS guru. But, I am going with a friend to BB in late February to trial run and GPS route the Dos y Dos and Desert Challenges. The ADV should be easy to navigate, consisting of roads mainly. I'm sure many on the forum have tracks for the ADV and Desert Challenges from prior years. I could sure use a set for preplanning. And a "real" GPS...not my 10 year old b/w garmin hiking one.

Howdy all. Just wondering what ride a stock Strom shod in shinko 705's with a moderately experienced pilot would best best be suited

I rode in Mexico with a newish rider on a F800. I was on a DRZ with Shinko 705's, 17's front and rear. Grip was adequate on the gravel and concrete. Tires are kinda heavy, so bump absorption isn't stellar, but they are a good inexpensive long lasting alternative. As long as there is no mud, they are good, and plenty for 95% Big Bend. I would think an average rider with offroad experience could run just about anything at BB with that set-up, but you'd probably find yourself mired down in a little silt one or twice. For the adventure challenge, the 800 would be the perfect ride, almost too easy.

I rode River Road on a DRZ400SM motard with DOT Bridgestone BT003's and, well, it wasn't all that fun, but I made it. I got stuck once on a mild uphill in silt. Had to turn around, go back 500 feet, and make a run for it. It was all about riding conservatively and sticking to the Class 1 / 2 road. Here is a cell phone clip from halfway down river road, a tame section.

John Rangel rode everything in big bend, part of the state park, and a run up Pinto Canyon to Marfa on his WR250X on roadrace SLICKS.

And here is a short clip of the first Richard's ride I attended. Epic ride, great friends, amazing place. So sad we can't do this securely anymore.

RoosterMan had Shinko 705s on his Wee and Tulstrom had even more street-biased tires on his Wee when we rode Old Ore and River Road in BBNP in November. The tires were not a problem in those roads. The sand on River Rd was a challenge but I think it was due to the size of the bikes rather than the tires.

I'm thinking of doing both the desert and adventure challenges in my Wee.

Are route descriptions for the Desert and Adventure challenge only available after we pay the reg fee? It would be nice if I knew the routes in advance so I can decide which one to sign up for...

We are hauling our bikes up Wednesday morning. 3 of us are hauling 2 bikes each.
BB is a long boring ride on a motorcycle and a truck to and from my house.
Have a safe trip and see you in BB.

James, you're not gonna give up on the V-Strom, are you?! :) I'm planning on doing both the Desert and the ADventure challenge on my Strom.

No never, well maybe. But not until the new Honda comes out. Just looking to add to the stable. The strom has been awesome!!! 14500 miles this year, it's been a trusty steed! I have to do a valve adjustment and a few other odds and ends when I get back. I am looking forward to making it down to this event!! :rider:

Hello Peter,

I'm wanting a GPS route for the DS and the ADV Challenge to make sure my slow butt doesn't get lost and have to spend the night on some ones porch. That happened to a friend of mine about 5 years ago and the sheriff found him about 2:00am on a porch out of gas.

I'm in... also booked at Topanga campground http://www.ranchotopanga.com/

I was training at Mustang Island Beach trying to get used to the lack of traction... this Sunday will spend some more time there...

As I mentioned before, I'm new in the off road business so, my goal will be just complete the Avd alive...

:rider:

I rode the adventure challenge with Dave (TWTourist) last year. He was on a Wee-strom with 90-10 tires, slick they were. I was on a Tenere with 80-20 Tourances. His skill was/is many times mine. he never fell, hurt his bike, and enjoyed it tremendously. I had very little skill or knowledge of deep gravel and went down three times in 300 yards. Strictly my lack of skill. Three times I went down with it on my leg. Three times it was lifted off me. Absolutely no damage to my Tenere but my leg was sore. He caught me limping so canceled the ride through Pinto Canyon. He could have made easily. Skill will be your limiting factor. the bike can do it.

You've got Brad's class under your belt now, so I'm expecting you to be right on my back tire this year! :rider:
Well, far enough back so you don't run over me when I drop mine anyway.

went to Mustang Island thus afternoon... practicing and training... felt down twice

no problem, that's why I bought a $2K bike... picked it up... the show must go on...:lol2:

(At least i'm learning to pick it up)

Hey Peter, I may have come across as demanding but that was because I was. LOL:-)
Just kidding, but if anyone knows of a route from last year or so that would help out please post.

Thank's

Bruce

Here is my track from last year edited a bit to clean up a little backtracking when we had a few bike problems. You should be able to filter this down and convert to routes using either Basecamp or Wingdb.

Last year, we ran it counter-clockwise. I have not heard if we are going the same way or if there are going to be any other changes.

Thanks, JT. I, too, was wondering about the exact route.

Here is the "official" GPS from Uncle.
