March Ride Report

So I've been a member for a while but have been pretty inactive. I've been to a few coffee house meetings in Plano, but nothing recently.

Here's my first ride report.... Sorry it’s so long, but I’m very excited.

All full size pics and additional pics can be found at my Flickr site.

Origin: Home, Plano, TX
Destination: Dublin, Leakey, and Port Aransas
Official Odometer Miles: 1,293
Equipment: 2004 Buell Firebolt

The diirections can be found at this Google Map.

Sunday, March 15, 2009

12pm - Leave Dallas headed for Dublin.

2pm - I've been a Dr Pepper fanatic for years and I finally have the perfect excuse to check out the Dublin museum! I learned a lot of great things, took the tour, and bought myself a ball cap and Dr Pepper Meat Marinade at the gift shop. I'll have to write another report after I try that out.

6pm - Arrive Enchanted Rock State Park. All the regular camping spots are full and I don't feel like hiking into the woods with my saddle bags, but the ranger recommends a place just six miles south called Frontier Outpost. It’s an interesting place, I will definitely go back. It’s mainly a beer garden and country store, but they offer camping as well. I want to check it out on a Friday or Saturday night when they have live music.

8pm – After getting the camping situation settled, ride into Fredericksburg to grab a Schnitzel at Der Lindenbaum. There was a loooong wait but some nice people let me sit with them! Three cheers for Texas hospitality!

10pm – Get back to Frontier Outpost and find that there is only one other group camping, and they are on their own bike adventure! They belong to ADV Rider. They have a Harley and two off-road bikes and are headed to Big Bend. They share their campfire and a lot of great stories and tips.

Monday, March 16, 2009

6:30am – Get up and get out! Need to get to the top of Enchanted Rock before sunrise…

7:30am – Made it to the top literally just in time. It was gorgeous. The clear skies were nice, but some clouds would have helped out the photos. I had the entire place to myself.

Did you know that parts of I-10 are 80mph speed limit?

[

11am – Arrive in Leakey, grab a quick bite and get on to the Twisted Sisters. This is the main reason for the trip, and I can’t wait. Route from Leakey is: East on 337, North on 55, North East on 335, West on 41, South on 336. The roads were awesome, the Nueces River looked VERY inviting, and there were a bunch of other bikers out. Do not attempt this route if you have been riding for less than two years.

1pm – Done with the Sisters, head to the Hog Pen for a beer and then off to Port Aransas.

Here are some of the other bikes around…

6pm – Finally, at the beach! Talk about a long day…

Tuesday, March 17, 2009
10am – Back on the beach for a full day of relaxation.

Wait… it’s Spring Break… (btw this is not me)

And St. Patricks Day… (this may be me)

Needless to say the bike was a great hit.

6pm – Head out for a steak dinner and spend the night at a friend’s in San Antonio

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

10am – Leave San Antonio, just trying to get back home at this point.

12pm – Stop in Waco for an awesome burger at Health Club. We went to the Baylor campus to ask random students where we could find a good burger, and their suggestion did not disappoint.

4pm – Home. And not nearly as sore as I thought I’d be.

Re: March Ride Report

Hurray! I thought Jared only rode his bike on the Big Toy Runs!

Good report!

Just don't let Laura see the pics with the girls on the bike!

How did you like 335? That one reminds me most of a roller coaster.

Re: March Ride Report

Ha, yes there were definitely some Tex Tech signs.

335 is definitely the most roller coaster of them, but it also had a little gravel here and there, and even some larger rocks. I pulled over once to move a rock about the size of a volley ball so no one else would hit it.

Re: March Ride Report

Looks like you had a GREAT TIME!
You wrote that riders w/less than 2 years experience should stay away from the sisters. Since I fit into that category I appreciate the warning. Truly I do! I heard the sisters were fun, but you're the first to write the 'warning'. Wow. It's THAT technical huh? I have NO PROBLEM getting in more seat time before I try it!
BTW...I bought the Dr Pepper cake & frosting mix while I was in Dublin. It was "ok". Don't forget to write the report on the steak marinade!

Re: March Ride Report

I wonder what speed the troopers would pull you over at on that section. ( 80 mph speed limit ) Most will pull you at 80 in a 70 here on Louisiana. If I 10 goes through a town, then it's lower. Probably get you at 75.

I've never been stopped along the 80 MPH I-10/I-20 corridors, but from what I understand, the tolerance along this section is less since the speed limits were raised. 4-5 MPH seems to be the zone that is OK, but much over that and DPS (about the only people patrolling that area), will ticket you for it.

I think you are right - DFW_Warrior got a ticket in the 80 MPH zone and he was only doing around 87 or so...

Gotta love the picture of the guy doing a faceplant. Perfectly timed, and you can see his footprints. I can just hear him saying "get a pic of me running into the water".

Yeah, I really disappointed I didn't have the video camera going for that one.

I stop here every year with my Hill Country riding crew, great place to take a break and plan the next curve assault.

Now THIS is what I call accessorizing your ride !

Thanks for the pics/report.

You asked the wrong students......... The Elite Grill is where you should have gone. Other than that, good ride report.
