Red river battleground tour

I like history, not particularly a civil war buff either, but it’s going to have my butt in the saddle for three days and three states and some good food and company along the way.

Hi all. Maximus_Flavius and I have been hashing this out this evening and there is a lot of room for changes and suggestions. We are planning a run to Vicksburg, MS for March 16th-18th (tentative but pretty firm). I have created a route with sleep stops and it should be fun. We ultimately want to stay off of the superslab so its all B roads. The battlegrounds we intend to cover are as follows:

Pleasant Hill, LA
Port Gibson, MS
Champion Hill, MS - deleted 1/5
Vicksburg, MS
Mansfield, LA

That is the proposed order.

Day 1 start will be Waco, large breakfast followed by a boatload (imperial measurement) of riding.
I have two overnight stops set, both ending the days riding at approximately 5-6pm on days 1 and 2. Starting time will be 7:30am each day (or around there anyway), this will put us in at all of the battlefields with enough time to gawk, photograph and linger at each one.

I have not planned anything yet for fuel/pee/food stops and your input would be welcome, especially on the food. :eat:

Be warned I am a complete rookie at trip planning and if someone wants to take it and run with it that actually has a clue I will be happy to turn it over to them. (If you want to look at it PM me your email address and I will send you the link to it)

We currently have five people who have expressed interest and if anyone would like to get in on this please let us know. March is a long way away so no bookings of any kind will be made until February or so.

So with all of that said, here is the in/out list: (I will let the other interested parties sign themselves up as they figure it out)

In: BigKev72, Maximus_Flavius, Zephyr, c_m_shooter (partial to MS),centexrider, traveldiva, misterk, LeloTX, rsquared

Outer than out: Mitchntx

Maybe: my6

Count me in too

Hey Kevin, I know it's early, but would you send the gpx file when you get it done?

So when you say “back roads” can I assume “paved back roads”? I’m on a Goldwing.

for those of us coming from the metroplex, i dont think we want to ride to waco for breakfast (i35 is a whipping). Where and what time can we meet you east of Waco

That is a good question, I will have to take a peek at the planner and see what time and where we will be ending up, give me a few and I will see what I can come up with.

Also...new GPX. Still subject to minor changes though.

OK planning on being in Pleasant Hill at about 1300 hours. Perhaps Nacogdoches around lunchtime? How does that sound? It will be spring break, so probably no so many SFA kids drunk in the streets in Nac that day....

OK just to address a concern that was brought up to me. Vicksburg itself is a pretty open slate on the timetable. We will get there pretty early and can basically close the place down as we have nothing scheduled afterwards other than checking into the motel for the evening. All of the timings are pretty flexible (or at least with me they are) I will make sure that the final and updated GPX is posted well before the trip starts that way everyone has the ability to navigate and play catch-up.

Also...again, if anyone is good with the Garmin software, please please please feel free to grab that GPX, tweak the heck out of it and send it back....Im doing all of this using Furkot and exporting it as a GPX, it has been working ok on a couple of test tracks I made up locally here on my 665, however I dont know if it will fly for everyone.

BigKev: I’ll meet up with you boys in Crockett. I’ll be coming up from Magnolia.

Also, i was looking on Furkot. Can you clarify: are we spending the night in Natchez MS or pushing on to Vicksburg the first day? I’m a little confused by the timeline shown in Furkot.

That sounds like a great trip but I can't make it. I might have breakfast with you when you leave.

I'm not familiar with Furkot, whats the difference with it and BaseCamp?

Furkot is web based and much more user friendly.

Ok. Just a heads up, if you are planning on staying in the casino hotel in Natchez get a room while the getting is good.
