Approx cost for top box repaint

I know some folks have had this done. Any idea as to the cost?

From what I've been following here and there, powdercoating is the way to go if all the bits and pieces allow for it. And quite reasonable to boot. Shoot one of the site sponsors a PM on it....

Well, that deal fell through but it doesn't mean something else might not pop up in my search. I don't think powder coating will work on plastic though. We are talking Givi/Shad/Stock on an FJR, not Touratech on a sweet looking GS.

The silver panel on my Krauser K5 topcase doesn't seem to look that good with the Candy Arabian Red of my new Concours14. I have thought about getting it painted or maybe getting a sheet of the black Scotchlite reflective material to cover it up.

I asked around a while back to get the top of my E52 color-matched on my Versys, it was going to be in the $200 range. The expensive part is really the paint--the Kawasaki blue takes 2 color layers plus a clear coat to match. If your FJR happens to be a common color like black, it would be significantly cheaper.

5 years ago when I wanted a fuel tank painted, I went to an auto paint shop and waited (not long, in this case) for when they were going to a paint a car with the color I wanted. Cost me $75 for a paint job that looked excellent and was fuel resistant.

Hrm, I just got a quote back from a local painter. $200-$300 depending on the color. I already lost the deal but it wouldn't have been a good enough one for that. I can get a full Shad setup for around $400 in color.

A friend got a quote from a local paint and body shop for $250. We thought that was expensive. He bought a very close match bumper color in rattle can from an automotive paint store for $12.95 + tax. We wet sanded and sprayed it and then clear top coated with some automotive clear I had left from another project. His total cost was less than $20 and 3 hours easy labor including dry time. Box looks great.

No spray bomb paint will every be even close to the quality and hardness of automotive finishes. Now being a retired body shop mgr. for a large metroplex dealership for over 33 years, do I sometimes use a spray bomb, yes I do. I can paint with that spray can and do a great job, but just like I said, the quality and hardness of the paint is not there. Paint is all in the prep work, you can do a nice job with the spray can, but items like, fuel tanks, side panels, and parts of high use (like parts that get rubbed, or when fuels and oils are present) I go for the automotive stuff. One note here, most painters paint on the side or as we say "came in through the back door", ask around, cash is still king.

It cost me about $200 just to buy the paint for a candy color paint job on side panels and tank.
